How To Paint Silver and Gold

  • Here's a quick demonstration of my metal-painting technique. Really it is all about learning how to paint what you see, and not what you think you see. These two cylinders took around a half hour each to paint, not counting a bit of drying time in between layers. I hope you'll try this!
PS Sorry my preliminary drawings are hard to see! This is why I usually don't do them in my videos. When you draw for watercolor, you have to do it about this lightly.

Finally an honest tutorial for metal surfaces. Very good information. I was running a mural project workshop with TAFE Students and the building owner wanted 2 large (10 feet tall/around 3 feet diameter) chrome pillars added to the corners of the mural after we started ... trying to explain technical issues involved in making a chrome illusion to someone with no art training or experience was not successful.
An art paint manufacturer the owner called, told him "just purchase His Brand metallic silver, that would do the job" After the weekend I returned with my team of students.. and there was this silver brush painted ..??.. ( look like they used a 6 inch house painting brush) … really not sure ..anyway … to save the project, I went to a Vinyl supply house and bought actual mirror coated Vinyl and we applied it to the pillars. Life span of this Vinyl was around 4-5 years, while the museum quality pigments on the mural were for a lifetime.
On that line of thought some 35 years ago a customer wanted real copper on a "Wine Shop" store mural. I was able to purchase actual copper metallic powder. We masked the copper bands on the barrel images, spray it with a shellac mix ... hand rubbed it to a smooth shinny finish, then sealed it with 3 more clear coats of lacquer (fixative spray). The final clear was normal oil based varnish. A lot of effort, but the public could actually touch the mural.

AMAZING! It's true that it's about painting what you see and not what you think. I've seen people trying to paint these types of metallic surfaces and they just paint a solid one color flat wash and leave some highlights which doesn't look realistic.

Thank you ma'am. Very helpful! This isa great teaching tool. I've got to paint a mural requiring a metallic subject and this is by far the best tutorial I've found yet. Love how you explain as you go and your attention to detail. Keep up the great work! 👍

I love how you use masking fluid ! I've been painting with watercolors for two years, and I'm at a point where I'm happy about how my paintings look like, but I still struggle a bit with masking fluid, and in particular dealing with the stark white areas that are left afterwards. Super helpful tips :) thank you !

Kelly, I finally got my hands on your basics book! Can't wait for it to come. I love acrylic ink and your style is very helpful in teaching me to "control" it. Could you do a video on your favorite masking fluid and interesting ways to use permanent masking fluid? Adore you, keep making magic with watercolor!

So happy to have found you. I so appreciate your sharing on YT.Thank you. I'm trying to copy your fantastic paintings just for my own pleasure. Would you consider doing a Western series, as in cowgirls, horses, hats, boots, etc. I would so love that! So few artist's can produce Western. Also, the Strathmore series books are usually sold out. Good for you! Thank you again! HUGE admirer.
