As Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition in the UK it is no wonder the carol 'O Christmas Tree' has German origins. The carol started life as 'O Tannenbaum' ('O Fir Tree') and the modern version came from the pen of German composer and teacher Ernst Anschütz, who adapted the melody from a 16th-century Silesian folk song. As time went on, and the fir tree gained its association with Christmas, this song did likewise. It was translated into English as 'O Christmas Tree'.
