This film has become so important to me, I've watched it twice, I think about it so often, it's so incredibly powerful and beguiling, the pace, the setting, the characters, it's a world I love to get lost in. It makes magic grown up, not "abracadabra" but Abramelin, portrays magic as an academic and arduous process that it's riches are only rewarded to those with the stamina and resilience to complete the rites. The 'shower of gold' scene for me is proper goosebumps, the first indication that this is real, this is working. The smoking shadow is incredibly unnerving, the viewer along with Sophia is leaning forward, straining to see something in the dark. It's concluded with enough glamour and special effects to feel rewarding and satisfying without being tacky. If you love this film like I do, it's fair to say we'd probably be good friends - it's one of those films.
I've thought, "Hmm... I should watch that again..." and then set aside an evening to sit there and SOAK IT IN.
This film is masterful. With some movies, you drink in their ambience and they intoxicate you. This film is like fermenting inside an oaken barrel full of rum for a couple centuries. It picks up your head, takes it to Liam-Gavin-World, and mercifully returns it to you at the end credits.
I love good, intelligent films. This is a permanent favourite. 😊
Most underrated film I've seen this year. It's a shame the masses have absolutely atrocious taste and sensibilities when it comes to horror. Anything that isn't a jumpscare fest gets a bad audience rating at IMDB,RT,MT,etc.
so many negative reviews criticizing the "look" of the demons.. people are such MORONS
I found the mpvie from a post in FB group (occult group). I love it so much!!! 😭😭😭❤
this movie was amazing
I completely agree with you. This film is so unique, so beautiful, amazing and so different to other "horror" films out there. Yeah, really underrated!!! T___T
Bad reviews? What you on about? It had mostly very good reviews. See Rotten Tomatoes review site.
the scene where she's alone in a room, sitting by the desk and writing or smth, FREAKED THE HELL OUT OF ME. almost pissed my pants. THANK YOU Liam , truly one of the best recent horrors I've seen. no jump scares, just pure madness and that primordial fear!
I was having fun during the movie but as the end approached my attention got bigger and bigger until the appearance of the angel. Pure genius the way this angel was represented as well as the music composed in this scene. A masterpiece and more than just a horror movie. Congratulations to those involved.
I think this film is a MASTERPIECE. Ive watched it 5x plus, and I will be watching it again. BRAVO to Liam Gavin, Steve Oram, Catherine Walker, the CREW and EVERYONE ELSE INVOLVED.. absolutely BRILLIANT
A Dark Song: MASTERPIECE
Agreed
Agreed.
TRASH movie unless you are a woman
Finally a film that exhibits an actual understanding of ceremonial Magick. Thank you Liam Gavin. Hopefully this will inspire something of revolution in the genre. It has certainly raised the bar.
One of the best occult films I've ever seen , pure brilliance.
Thought this film was truly amazing, I have gone back to it several times. Hope more people watch and appreciate it.
Possibly my favourite film of this genre, though as I write this I feel there aren't many films in this particular genre. I hope he has more for us!
I've never thought so much about a film before this, it is for me an absolute masterpiece. The night after I watched this I saw giant clothed statues of religious saints in a dream, just standing in a field of tall grass from where I used to live.
I don't know anything well enough on the occult to say anything meaningful about the Abramelin ritual in the film but it is definitely thought-provoking and invites one to know more. This movie is absolutely brilliant especially in the end where Sophia sheds her demons and asks for forgiveness and the angel smiles at her because of her sincere but powerful favor. I think deep down as humans we are all just connected to this pursuit, to find acceptance and forgiveness for ourselves and others.
Well said. I loved this movie. I was genuinely surpised and moved by the favor she asks of the arc. I don't know anything about magic rituals either and while it's very interesting stuff, I do believe it tampers with potentially very evil things beyond our ability to comprehend. Regardless, this movie made me feel hope and I think that's why I loved it.
I've reccommended this film to anyone who will listen! I typically hate horror movies, but this one has me obsessed. Just the music evokes a feeling of unease and the whole ambiance of the film is truly unique.
Without the angel scene the movie doesn't work at all. But with it, actually asserting the reality of what they've been doing, placing the whole thing within a heaven/hell dichotomy, giving definition to the the characters and what they've been fighting to achieve. It transforms the story from one about desperation and lose, morale ambiguity, people using and hurting each other, into a story about resilience and faith to a point beyond what seems humanly possible. It's the sort of alchemy that humanity has always sought in the divine and it's portrayed as beautifully and powerfully as we could hope for it to be.
I loved that the movie implies that nobody has seen magic done because it is the most grueling, terrifying, dangerous practice imaginable, and only a mad, hubristic, and despairing person would attempt it.
Bravo! Clearly you know an enormous amount about this subject. Why do folk insist on commenting on subjects they haven’t the first clue about; that’s a rhetorical question. I’m going back to Jiujitsu matches.
I went through a period of my life where I became obsessed with this film. Watched it every day for a few months & I would get so much new insight from it every time.
One day as I was walking out of my place I bumped straight into Steve Oram (Solomon) I was blown away by the outrageous synchronicity.
Magick is beautiful & very real.
This film truly lifts the veil
This movie was like a huge Ritual Pasta...loved every sec of it!!
Stumbled onto this on Amazon Prime. Superb film. Music was haunting, sensitive performances from the two leads , beautiful cinematography. Brilliantly directed. Couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
Very scary and absolutely illuminating film...spoke to my soul. scariest part was the voice and cigarette burning in the chair..especially since a death was happening at the same time...like the death opened wide the doorway between worlds. My favourite movie so far!
a massively underrated piece, thank you for this. I've never seen a film with such intricate rituals, and the underlying message behind it all. A smoldering slow burn with a powerful ending. Hands down.
This is a very special film. Blown away that it was Oram's first leading role. He's extraordinary (and so is Catherine Walker). And this director's vision is so fantastic. Such a striking image at the very end.
This was extremely interesting movie.. The subject of ritual magic is fascinating
This film affects me deeply every time. The end scene brings me to tears. A remarkable achievement in film.
This was such a good movie. Both actors were incredible in this, and their characters were multi-layered, which I love.
The dude got his invisibilty he died guiding the end of the ritual while invisibke
Amazing film: impeccably performed, raw, terrifying, numinous, and uplifting. The best ceremonial magic I have ever seen on film, and the best, strangest, most magnificent angel. Both leads are incredible, compelling sympathy even though they are deeply damaged people. I've been thinking about it for days.
Perfectly put. Same
Wait - this was one of Steve Oram's first 'big roles?'
Wtf? He was a total powerhouse - one of the strongest characters I've ever seen!
Mr Oram: your acting conjured up something pointedly real. Bravo, sir. 👏👏
It was so damn great! Please, watch this movie.
The images in this film haunted me for days , like a screensaver to my mind.
Incredible movie.
Masterpiece. Pure art. Magic poetry. Mysticism is a love letter to the divine world.
Just watched this. I didn't expect it to be beautiful.
This is such an amazing film. The research that went into it, the cast, the cinematography... an amazing film that I need to revisit.
Liam Gaven deserves another film. As a fan of the genre, I honestly think that this feature was one of the finest modern examples ever made.
Easily one of the best horror movies on the past decade - their deliberate use of complex magic was GENIUS. I've watched this movie a few times and it still leaves me unsettled.
If you sell this movie as a horror movie, some people might be disappointed; unfortunately most people are very used to the cliché jumpscare and fast-paced action. This is an extremely underrated movie for that reason. It is a solid 10 / 10 as it achieves what it proposes: Extremely well researched and executed; it can easily be part of an esoterism or ocultism course in any university...
But for the average person to like it, recommend it as a Drama; and people might give it a chance :)
Brilliant movie. Unlike the director, I wouldn't describe it as a horror movie although it has one or two 'horrific' scenes in it but they are not gratuitous. It works on so many levels. I cared about the characters and their fate. It has a moving ending. One of the best occult themed movies I've seen.
Incredible film. One you will never forget.
Great movie made me cry story of forgiveness hit ne in moment i was going through something bad i lost child 😢😢😢 he takes all u have to forgive
Just watched this for the 2nd time tonight. Such an amazing movie. The music fits perfectly, everything builds just right. "I'm going to unshackle the house from the world." That line was so incredibly eery to me and drew me in.
Incredible acting. I really believed in these characters. A shaman that's 'just a bloke'. I found it unsettling, uncomfortable, and distasteful - the two characters unpleasant and deeply flawed, and yet somehow endearing. I cared about them, especially Solomon for some bizarre reason, that was probably because of his depiction as 'just a bloke'. Loved it.
The ritual is based on "The Book of Abramelin"
Very similar in the Testament of Solomon....conjure the demon and asked what angel controls him
Oh really!?! You must’ve completed the ritual to engage with your genius, to have been able to work that out.
@@straightline76 homerun comment😂
This film is a masterpiece top to bottom. Please make more films. Now.
I loved this movie.
Absolutely love this movie.
Not a well-known film, but it's great. What I liked most was the gravity of the situation Oram's character kept reinforcing. This isn't Harry Potter's magic; it's unsettling and dangerous, and while Oram's character understands this, the other character, Sophia, doesn't.
"Marco, while you're there.. could you get us a trolley?"
Phenomenal movie it doesn't need gore and kills to make it so chilling I highly recommend it to horror fans because it's beautiful and stays with you long after the credits roll!
Screenwriting books and forums and courses will have you believe there are rules to this game. There are none and this film proves it. Bravo.
I love this film so much!
Disturbing, unsettling and utterly captivating.
Great acting and spooky music/soundtrack
This film changed me
Beautiful story
Just watched it yesterday, and really enjoyed it w/ moments of fear, and joy ❣️
Guys can pls reply to this comment. I loved this film but i need a closure. I wwtched every theory on the ending , but i need a closure. Can anyone let me know why the ritual went wrong and what the power to forgive gave her the redemption???
It failed because her guardian angel was protecting her from her mistake.
*Matthew: Chapter 5 Verses 7-15 (The lords Prayer)*
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
*(Basicly dont do chants i.e. Rituals like the heathen. Heathen were of course those who follow false gods, witches, shamen, occultist etc because God aint paying attention to this)*
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
*Self Explanitory*
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
*As seen at the bottom verse if she had not forgiven then she could not be redeemed.
Her guardian angel knows this as well as anyone, hence why the ritual did not work as expected and she got what she needed before she even knew what she was looking for. See verse 8*
Highly recommend this film, I loved evert second of it!
trash , asked for money back. its about a murderer woman asking for forgiveness . smh
Phenomenally brilliant film‼️♡● ●🌈5🌟/5🌟🌈●‼️
Your user name only makes your comment even more delicious. Nicely done! 👍
Amazing sound in the film
I really liked it. Great performances, creepy imagery and ...*spoiler* the shot of the guardian angel was as shocking as it was beautiful!
Great film. I really enjoyed the ending.
BRILLIANT FILM!
Amazing movie!
Brilliant film!
excellent movie, you either get it or you dont, not a horror movie, much more than that.the best depiction i have seen of occult ritual, this is what it is actually like.met a few magi/shaman types in my time, while wise and interesting they were all a bit cranky, one of their main gripes like the magi in the movie, was that the student wasnt taking seriously enough or preparing stringently enough for the ritual, and yes these rituals do take place in old sometimes abandoned buildings not in shiny temples.as for the movie very well directed, acted, filmed, atmosphere etc and fresh.the tv series strange angel about rocket scientist and one time head of the ordo templii orientis jack parsons is also worth a watch.proper in depth look at the occult as opposed to the usual cliched, standard satanic fare
Me coming from a completely different culture, I thought this shit was dope ASF!!!!! It hit all the marks that the old-school films from the 70s and 80s did without being gimmicky, it's a classic dawg!
10/10 Film
this film got me back into magick...
Amazing film. So true of magick
this film is AMAZING.
I really liked this movie.
Great movie
This movie inspired me to do the real Abermalin ritual which i will start on Easter 2020
Don’t do it
so, did you do it?
@@torkaerius no I got distracted by Covid, I will try again this Easter 2021 ☺️
@@cavegrl besto of luck
Be careful. Most of the translations of the ritual are incomplete.
Anyone notice the irony with liam Gavin talking about how incredible it is that he came up with this movie in his head now all the critics are talking about and its a success its almost like....magic.lol. Using magic to make a movie on magic love it!
A brilliant debut.
LOVED this movie!
If you want to watch an occult film (and I disagree with the director, it's NOT a horror film) that has an atmosphere so thick you can walk on it, a perfect score - for what the film is - and so many undefinable moments that it will keep you thinking about it long after you've seen it, try this one on...Bravo. Loved it. Own it. Still watch it.
wheres the recomendation? this was trash
I ended up watching this film a night or two before doing some shrooms. Not that it was a bad trip but it was dark, cold, damp, and misty outside. Depression kind of weather, the images of this film (which I had seen twice in a week). This is the kind of horror I enjoy, more along the Lovecraft type than a slasher or BS crap they are putting out now in days. Being American I'm the first one to say that Hollywood is cranking out crap for morons. You have to go with foreign films, or small production houses to get a quality film any more.
This movie is masterpiece, but I have just one question: WHAT DID ANGEL SAY???!!!
I am surprised that this film didn't get more popular. It was excellent!
It was like a continuation of the film Bug.
User User just done some vague research on that film, is it any good? From what I’ve read I can put together its two lovers away somewhere and the boyfriend is suffering from mental defects.
Steve Oram is a bloody inspired actor and himself a brilliant writer. He appears in any film and immediately compels total belief and investment.
Really good movie -- really. Very well written.
Masterpiece, coolest film.
i wonder if the magi in the film... with his short temper, sexual manipulation, dismissal of other magi's and drinking habit... was loosely based on crowley.
Probably more based on the character's namesake!
This was fucking insane. Please make more movies like this world.
this film is brilliant and probably the best depiction of magic next to Renegade with Cassell
A divine film. (No pun intended.)
This movie was epic
I enjoyed the movie a lot and I have the book The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage; that the movie is somewhat based on but this movie started off kinda slow then it progress and progress more until it was awesome but a dark song is carefully written and it’s the only movie that gives us a insight or understanding if we did the ritual for the guardian angel.
shes a murderer
The Bible is all you need. Better than talking to an angel, you can talk directly to God Who created the Angels. Angels don’t grant wishes. God answers prayers. Jesus Christ is the only door to God.
Just makes me appreciative that I can speak to the One True God by just bowing my head in prayer without going through ridiculous rituals that Satan requires. Christ is King. Renounce Satan and all ritual magick. Darkness always runs from light.
What Satan? They never spoke to or tried to speak with "Satan".
Who?????
TRASH Movie but Masterpiece for women 😂
Hilarious. This guy acts as though be came up with the idea of this renote operation. It's CROWLEYS story.
This was the most boring and most pointless movie I have ever seen. The only thing good about it was the soundtrack.
watched this twice before knowing anything about abramelin. then I found about the connection. I watched it again and there were a few refs to abramelin. but it was easy to miss as I had. this is what lets the film down. at the start of the film the introduction should have been screaming, look, this is based on a recorded 13th century ritural by a renound kabbalist. instead we were given two lines out of the bible. which makes me wonder if the director wouldn't or couldn't make this intro to abramelin. were the censors afraid that this ritual would be repeated if the abramelin connection was to clear. silly as it sounds
It looked like it could be an authentic ritual whether people knew the origin or not. That was what really mattered to the film. It doesn't exist as an introduction to Abramelin.
Why do you need everything explained to you?
I think it's better they didn't say it was based on Abramelin. If they did, this comments would be filled with fans of the ritual explaining all kinds of errors... It's best to let people research the origin of this idea and granting part of it to the creativity of the writer and director.
@@manuelaparraud6829 they were told not to.
Last 30 mins of the movie went to shit...Its like the director gave up
and said "lets throw some spooky crap, some "damned souls" smeard in
flour (very scary..Iam sorry but i doubt damnded souls look like an undiscovered tribe in the jungle) and a cheap cgi angel with a deformed arm.Let the viewers
make their own interpretation of the movie (this way it will make us
look smarter and different). You dont like Hollywood cheesiness but independent films became a new genre of cheesy. Its like the viewer knows that "oh shit its independent, means iam gonna wonder wtf is going on".The fake cigs were the best part of the movie..
