Poll predicts hung parliament after election - with SNP, Lib Dems gaining seats

  • Early this morning, parliament closed for five weeks in scenes of chaos and fury. During the formal ceremony, angry opposition MPs sang in the chamber in protest and claimed the government was silencing their voices. Equally bitter on their side, Conservative MPs heckled the Speaker, who they consider to be biased against them.
Boris Johnson insists that the best way of resolving the Brexit divisions is to hold a general election. But would that provide a clear solution?

      1. Calling for a second referendum to ensure that the public haven't lost their appetite for Brexit can never ever be labelled as undemocratic. More votes are MORE democratic, not less. If the public still decide they want Brexit, then that is what will happen.
      2. The leave campaign specifically stated that they could negotiate an excellent deal with the EU as part of Brexit. No deal Brexit was NOT what these people campaigned for. It's something that the people of this country did NOT vote for. Pushing forward with a no deal Brexit that less than half of Brexiteers want is definitely undemocratic. The more moderate Brexit voices are being ignored, half of the nation voted to remain, they're being ignored.
      3. You'd have to be clinically insane to think that the UK will be better off not trading with it's closest neighbour. You'd have to be clinically insane to think that the UK will do better outside of the largest and wealthiest trading bloc in the world. The combined wealth of the EU is greater than that of the USA and they've given us favourable treatment for years. We didn't adopt the Euro, we didn't adopt Schengen. I think it is grossly undemocratic to cover these things up and mislead the public using Facebook memes to push your agenda. Don't you? Imagine if Corbyn spent thousands and thousands of pounds sending targeted memes containing inaccurate information to push his agenda. People like you would be screaming for him to be removed from office. And yet you back Johnson and Cummings...
      4. I don't recall anyone in any referendum voting to become 'little America'. They're going to offer us an appalling trade deal in the event of Brexit, in fact, most countries will. We are now known globally as the country that ran away from a great deal. They will all know that we have no trade deals, pretty much every nation is a member of a trading bloc. And you think they're going to rush to save us? No, they're going to rush to exploit us. Did you vote for other nations to take away our NHS, give us crappy food that don't undergo the same standards and scrutiny that it does now? If you did, then do you think that's what Brexit meant to all 17.4 million people three years ago?
You want to talk about undemocratic? Look no further than the leave campaigns.

    • @berniebasset9465
      @berniebasset9465 4 роки тому +4

I'd also like to add that a second referendum would likely involve options to vote for the kind of Brexit you want. Surely that would give parliament a clearer mandate than they currently have. Thus more democratic than the initial referendum.

Debatable. He is not supposed to show any political bias, but it is usually fine for the speaker to comment on matters of the house. This situation falls under both camps. Personally, I think he technically shouldn't be doing it, since to do so he has to make a judgement call of the minds of politicians. The next UK GE is being reduced into a binary Leave/Remain election, with little regard for any vision for what either choice would mean for the UK - and I don't mean just England. I sincerely mean for the future of the UK as a state with four nations.
A finely balanced conundrum (and let's face it, a 52/48 split is nearasdammit 50-50) needs coalitions of parties (and independents?) that seek basic common ground with the intention of forming a joint, multi-party Govt. The First Past the Post system is unkind to this type of compromise politics and the 2010 election is still seen as an aberration. But the UK has changed and we need to change with it. After over 3 years, we find that Brexit was as undeliverable as 'Peace in Iraq'. It was based on a false prospectus and a collective belief in unicorns. Now is the time to get real. That type of Brexit is not possible. Now what?

@@nn-ro1lv Well, thanks for your considered response. My beef with your assumption is postulating a 'reasonable' person would necessarily hold those views. Clearly if one's value system prioritises short term GDP and places, in my estimation, undue faith in economists that repeatedly misread the emerging market and economy they MIGHT hold the alarmist no-deal views from a position of reason.
However that necessitates they exclude al the counter arguments, that the UK may well rally, unite and exploit their new found trading freedom to well surpass their previous prosperity. Further many will gladly trade the national GDP for the local prosperity they will reap.
For others, again completely the fruit of a process of reason, many will value representational democracy, nationalist over Eurocentric policies, control over migration, defence policies that prioritise the UK etc. To divorce reason from an individual's values is a mistake.
Certainly you're right to point to the electorates distaste for a bleak midwinter election but I'm certain a snap election or single policy election is equally unwished for. However the greater populace is heartily sick of Brexit, angry at politicians and wants it done now so should Labour gather the gall to face the people it would be done in short measure.
Boris still has Blair's detestable 'state of emergency' legislation he could call on, he clearly is not going back to the EU and he obviously will collapse his government before he will adopt a deal along the lines of May's. His entire effort since coming to power would be negated by that act so clearly he would be deposed before he accedes.
Which brings us back to an election. No-one has a crystal ball but this election is as sure as death and taxes and Johnson has the greatest power of any individual to determine the date. This polling is as wonky as a 3 pound note as well, just another example of the miscalculation that got Brexit, Trump, Sweden and the 2019 Australian election wrong.

Boris is leading the polls if he gets us out he will be the hero if hes blocked no one will blame Boris but just imagine the public anger that will be directed towards MPs and parties that are involved in blocking us. Plus Farage will help the Tories if it gets us brexit. 406 constituencies voted leave vs 242 remain just because leavers don't kick off like remain trust me they are out there and when we vote leave vote big. Look at the EU elections ( Brexit Party ) and the Tories voting for a PM all big leave wins.

I'm a Tory member living in a solid labour area. The Conservatives have no chance here, but the BP did extremely well in the European election this year. If they stand a candidate here, I will vote BP. Everyone neds to vote tactically now to put an end to these quisling MPs.

@Sven Tempest I am older than the UKs membership of the EU you odious little quisling. Make a rational point, or jog on.

What this analysis seems to have forgotten is that the Brexit Party will take Labour Leave seats and there are 158 of them to play for. This is where they will deploy their '14%' which is a national image not a targeted one. The BP will not challenge Tories in rock solid Tory seats.

1st Referendum was the worst referendum in the history of human kind. No-one knows what "leave" means - deal, no-deal, single-market, customs union etc. We need 2nd Referendum to find out.

The poll is fake news. In any case, Johnson should abolish elections, they get in the way of democracy.
