Couldn't listen to this song for many years..I was listening to it when I saw my best friend get blown up in an.ied attack in Iraq...I am so glad to rediscover the jayhawks...they have gotten me through many times of severe depression... thanks for everything guys..you really rock...
I know this is 2 years later, but I'm so sorry you had to see that...and I'm sure many more horrible things. I hope they are still getting you through the tough times ❤️
well...I have no choice but to love this.My daughter is the most beautiful Marina in the world and she loves this too. When it came out she was so sure it was all about her.I'll forever cherish the memory of my beautiful 8 yr old singing her heart out and harmonizing with The Jayhawks!!
so this song is about a old woman named marina who realize she cant get her youthful charms back no matter what she does ....and is upset about it ... ... yet a old man who knows her strongly believe its not important to him .... telling her save her sadness for a more serious loss...such as ..the old man who still cares about her........ how touching....
Most under-rated Band ever. Letterman knew how good these guys are. Few others. They should be enormous.....talent, originality, virtuoso musicianship, just no "image" that can be instantly packaged, labeled and sold.
Vocal talent. Lyric poetry, the guy is comforting his teenaged daughter. Too sensitive? The ability to write a beautiful original melody, musicianship, far, far superior to the musical-wallpaper-to-copulate-to we are afflicted with in 2016 from humans such as Ghetto Burlesque Superstar Beyonce' and her husband Joe Camel?
4 years ago, in the middle of the work day, we got the news that a coworker had been found dead in his home (of natural causes.) He was pretty much the human incarnation of Eeyore. Intentionally gloomy and loved for it. A very good friend. This song was playing when we were told and I just remember leaning against the nearest thing to sit on the floor, and hearing this song. And it fits his life so well.
I just love this perfect little song. It has an REM lilt and feel to it, with the prominent bass line, the splashes of piano, and the beautiful harmony.
I was listening to this song when I got back from school. As I arrived home my mom told me my grandma passed away. I cut the song and cried for days. Since then, I couldn't hear this song without singing about this day. It doesn't describe her, doesn't define who she was but every time I think about her
My dad had a pizza restaurant for a few years, and people could call ahead and order, and they had to give their names, standard pizza store. One time, a lady called in and ordered what it was she ordered, and her name was Marina. My dad laughed, as he is a jayhawks fan, and asked her if she had heard this song. She said no, and my dad replied, "well, its a good song, but maybe not the most flattering". We still laugh about that.
I worked in a retail store in the early 2000s. We had this crappy Muzak station playing boring stuff all day. But a few times a week they’d play a gem. That’s how I discovered this song. Also, “Life Less Ordinary” from Carbon Leaf.
Pretty little hair-do don't do what it used to Can't disguise the living All the miles that we've been through Looking like a train wreck Wearing too much makeup The burden that you carry Is more than one soul could ever bare Don't look so sad, Marina There's another part to play Don't look so sad, Marina Save it for a rainy day Save it for a rainy day Save it for a rainy day You never make your mind up Like driving with your eyes shut Rough around the edges Won't someone come and take you home Waiting for a breakthrough What will you set your mind to? We stood outside the Chinese restaurant in the rain Don't look so sad, Marina There's another part to play Don't look so sad, Marina Save it for a rainy day Save it for a rainy day Save it for a rainy day
“Pretty little hairdo, don’t do what it used to.” Man what a great way to start a song.
One of my drunk customers told me to come home and listen to this song because he never met a Marina. I'm glad I gave it a listen.
I have never met one either

Ye, an extremely overused Chord Progression, combined with one-dimensional lyrics, rly fkn original xD
+nice helmet bro Why don't you keep your shitty attitude to yourself?

I will never understand how they never became huge. So many great songs. Unique sound. Melodic as hell. A puzzle.

This is their best album I think. Every song is spectacular.
Rick Ruben produced this record.
One of the best songs of all time. Alt-Country at its absolute finest.
Probably my favorite and live EVER. I dance to every single song. Can't help it.

Pretty little hair-do don't do what it used to
