Historically, shortly after they created the HMS Dreadnought the British tried to create a battleship with the speed of a cruiser. They succeeded but it had far less armor and lighter guns despite being larger (to fit more boilers). Just like in the Nebulous game, 1v1 against a single cruiser it is a nightmare, but in larger battles Battlecruisers didn't tend to last very long. Ironically they were termed the "Invincible class" but they were only invincible when allowed to avoid major battles. While the HMS Dreadnought inspired a total change in how Battleships were made and used, and an arms race that lasted until WW1, the idea of a ship with that cost the same as a Battleship but couldn't be used in major battles was less popular.

The idea of a battlecruiser made a lot of sense knowing that 90% of battles are not against fleets with Dreadnought in them, having them be faster means they can defend or attack more positions the enemy cant defend or attack. Economically it made sense to go for battlecruisers, even when everyone started building dreadnaughts.

Battlecruisers where mostly used as commerce raiders later on

British Battlecruisers weren't designed to go head to head with proper dreadnoughts, they were designed to hunt down armored cruisers. HMS Invincible and HMS Inflexible did this very well at the Battle of the Falklands. The original Battlecruiser concept was sound but the British didn't learn the lessons of flash protection like the Germans did at the Battle of Dogger bank and that coupled with several other factors led to loss of three of them at Jutland. It was more of the lack of flash protection that exposed the cordite gun propellent to being accidentally ignited and less their inferior armor that led to their demise.

Battlecruisers weren't primarily designed with fleet combat in mind. They were ships that were faster than any escorted battleship could manage, but still bring the versatility of what a small battleship with escort would bring. They were designed to lone wolf it doctrinally and hunt escorted trade convoys. The issue is, however, that air power ended up dominating the seas, making it easy to track them and intercept even if they were faster. Since alone they would not survive long under this new climate, they were retooled to supply extra power and maneuverability in fleets.

I like the design style of these, and yes, the term "battlecruiser" seems rather historically fitting. A fast cruiser-killing glass cannon. My only complaint is the occasionally cluttered internal layout, but i guess that's more a positive than a negative.

There were actually two 'schools' of BCs: the 'British' methodology (fast battleship, skirting on armor) and the 'Imperial German' methodology (the basic idea is to squeeze as much of a BB into a cruiser-sized hull). Funnily enough, the Imperial German style would be better than the 'British' style...

It does indeed seem very balanced. I'd like to see it as a vanilla hull honestly. It looks great and I definitely see a gameplay niche for it.

Its look fits the game, but I think it's too different from vanilla visual design - it'd be better as an "advanced" specialist vessel, with some lore details to explain how it looks so much more different. Like that hull being a whipple shield to reflect lasers' glancing shots better or have a smaller signature.

You see with some modification, that makes a great BCG (Guided Missile Battle Cruiser) just use type 2 or type 3 missiles/torps and use counter measures instead of 4 laser PDCs.

That’s exactly what a battlecruiser is. It trades armour for speed. A BC is meant to chase down and destroy smaller ships such as cruisers but it does not have the armour to fight battleships. A duel between battlecruisers is who gets the first shot off usually wins as neither have the armour to take many hits.

This game is heavily inspired by real world naval battles, as the creator served on a warship before making this, and ships don't usually explode unless you've hit its ammo stores, or cause a reactor failure.
Most kills are mission kills, in which a ship lacks the nessasary components to operate due to enemy fire, thus no big explosion half of the time.
And if the reactor did explode, it would happen so quick you won't see the ship crack apart fast enough anyway

Ive only just got the game... Not even played yet.
Modding a game this early in its development is a bit of a waste of time and its asking for headaches as the update arrive.

    • @videosurfer268

The devs actually encourage modding. The game is also super easy to mod and thanks to the steam workshop, mod updates are seamlessly integrated and honestly super painless.
I’ve been enjoying the game for a while now and have had no trouble loading and unloading mods. Not to mention that mods add tons of cool concepts, hulls, and features that the devs don’t want to implement, which is completely understandable considering that they have a very distinct vision of the gameplay in the base game.

@@sahhull You can uninstall all mods with a single click if you wanted to. Also, I have had zero problems with mods during update cycles, mods are usually updated super fast and any mod that isn’t I literally click a single button and its gone. We’ve come a long way since the days of manually unzipping and dropping in files you know..
Like, you do you man, but I’d really recommend you get more experience with this game before you make up your mind like that. If you don’t want to change your mind than whatever, I’m not interested in carrying this conversation on any further.

@@sahhullaside from balance issues compared to vanilla hulls sometimes, they are generally not affected by updates at all. Unless the devs decide to port the game over to a newer version of unity, most mods will boot even after several version updates, plus it has linked itself to steam workshop one of the most powerful tools out there, you can delete faulty or unwanted mods with a click.
