Considering Engineering? // Advice on the college major decision!

- Here are some of my tips for those thinking about majoring in engineering. It's a field with an enormous variety of jobs, and a useful degree to pair with an MBA or law school for non-engineers as well. You'll have to learn a lot of difficult math, but you won't have to use it every day post-college. The pay is also consistently good for a field that only requires a bachelors degree; other majors either require further education or don't have as high out-of-college employment rates.

Fucking me
Lmao fucking saaaame
I hate this limbo

how u doing now ima be a junior in highschool and dont know what ima do with my life
I ve just completed my degree in mechanical engineering and 2 months later i got hired by a logistics company as a logistics engineer😊 and i am proud to say that i am a female engineer.
that's awesome! I'm also a (female) mechanical engineering. where did you study? I did my BEng in canada but now i'm doing my MSc in Europe:)
STEMinine you're in every engineering comments section
@@RiverTechJess I'm thinking about Software or ComputerE but I'm scared because I'd never thought that I could be an engineer, can you give me some advice?
Damn I’m an engineer I just started ballet dancing on the side. I’m proud to say that I’m male ballet superhero
Nua Mini congrats girl! Wtg,
“You’re gonna have to talk to people too”
Well shit.

Such a set of great advice - coming from such an young man - so proud of him!
1. Figure out what you want to do in life; what kind of people you want to hang out with - before you decide on which major?
2. Engineering jobs make people's life easy. So your job can create a fulfilling life
3. Personal projects are more important than GPA. Employers care about what you have done, not just what you studied
4. Be nice to people!!!!!
Thank you for this. Engineering isn't what I have in mind at the moment and I am indeed at a point where I am "freaking out about choosing a major." This video helped cleared brain fog and the momentary self-doubt for a moment. Personally, I have a lot of things I'm average at and a TON of things I'm interested in doing, so choosing a major has been one of the toughest decisions of my life thus far. Thanks for the advice and good luck with your projects!
You are literally me, I'm interested in math and all sciences and also freaking out coz I can't decide.
I''m being the opposite: nothing really interests me, and what do interests does not have a decent salary on my country at least.
The feeling of completing the high school last year and not knowing what to do, despite everyone deciding / studying what they want to is indescribably painful
But I agree with one thing, with no doubt is the most difficult challenge I have faced so far...
I just wish the answer comes
It took me a while to decide. Do you live near any Community Colleges? I did that untili made my mind
This video is more insightful and helpful than the last dozen hours of youtube I have watched. Thank you so much.
Good synopsis. I myself graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1996. Ironically, I ended up in the software space almost immediately. It was the go-go 90s, and software engineers were very sought after. So I actually ended up being a software developer for the first 12 years of my career. Eventually, I gravitated to project/program management and have been doing that ever since. Best advice I can give anyone is learn to play to your strengths. You will find as you advance in your career that certain positions more readily align with your skill set than others and it is important to recognize that.
Thanks man, I'm 14 and for as long as I can remember I've wanted to be a robotics engineer. Helps alot!
All great points! The value of an engineer's people skills is very overlooked in an academic environment.
People skills are everything!! An engineer would can build strong human relationships and communicate well, is a successful engineer!
It's so true! What I learned throughout my career is that your work pretty much doesn't matter if you can't communicate it to anyone. If people don't understand what you're saying or if you can't get them to care, then was there even any point of doing the work?
It depends on whether you want to go into management or stay technical.
Best video I have seen on this topic! Thank you! My son is awaiting decision for Fall of 2022 at OSU
you never know what you're doing then you go in and do it
love this sentence :D
This has been so informative! 👍 Solid advise on engineering specifically.
Currently making my decision and I must say, while you didn't go into too much depth, I still got a lot out of it. Thank you.
this video is a master piece. i kinda hate civ eng, but i found that i just always hated the studying/exam structure of learning but i LOVE learning/seeking a new method to solve a problem im having on my project. so thank you soo much for mentioning 1:35 this is such a crucial point. i love learning psychology SOOO much but the work environment is probably not for me for example. so if i went to study that i would probably have a blast but hate work. meanwhile this is the opposite, my dad is a construction project manager and he used to explain problems they had on site like, the builders built the server room without leaving a gap between the walls and that would be a fire hazard as the burn time would be much less before the wall collapsed. and i completely got and loved the science only cuz of the application, i never got learning science for its sake.
also struggled with math, not cuz i was bad at it but cuz i skipped math lazily through all of high school so it was a big hurdle as i had so many gaps but it made me feel so stupid when i was just not putting in the time to be completely honest.
3:22 this is so huge, i love helping people and am looking how to build very sustainably for those in need (much later) but as for now, love teamwork and have always been a people person, actually did stand up comedy for some time. and again got into the dumb trap that engineers are for introverts. i actually really wanted construction project management and thats kinda my goal still but my dad really recommend being a manager with an eng background is crucial to understand the people im managing. thanks alot for the video man. i wish you well, pretty boy XP
Love your videos!
I love how this just happened to come out the day after I toured the engineering college I want to go to. Also great job on this video! I love your content!
Thank you! Congrats and good luck!
which engineering college do you want to attend?
Florida Poly Technic
Nice sounds awesome, you have 1 more high school year left before you apply??
Jake Voorhees I was supposed to apply already, but I am going to do some community college first.
Love the video! Thanks man
This helped a lot. I'm still deciding on what to study but this has definitely given me some clarity. Thanks :)
You sir are wise beyond your years
Thanks.. Helped hearing that..
I’m in the 8th grade. I just don’t want to sit in a office cubicle all day.
relatable af
There are not many jobs now where you dont sit in cubicle - Anything else will be equally boring
Then do civil engineering
Trades
Find an engineering job that doesn’t do that and get the required degree for that job
Really helpful video! Thank you
you're amazing! helped a lot
This dude is so spot on. I got my degree in finance, currently working in IT, and looking to get into healthcare. The overlap of skillsets in a variety of industries was way more than I ever anticipated. I was so worried about selecting the 'right' degree because I thought it was going to determine my entire life's path - this isn't the reality!
How is the healthcare and health science. What it likes in IT world
Hi Carter, I enjoyed your video. My twin brother and I are Mechanical Engineering majors at UC Berkeley and have interned at Apple, Tesla, and Microsoft. We share weekly insights on how we got there, with a video coming out this week on why students should study engineering in college, hopefully helping budding engineers along the way.
Great advice man. Thanks.
Yup, very helpful for young potential engineering students!
he sugarcoated
I'm 34 and going back to school at CSCC for Electromechanical Engineering. This young man is right...Also, accomplish your big goals in small steps but never stop walking.
He just made my day, I was so down
I think you are really helpful , thanks
Very good video. Thank you
thanks this helped a lot :)
I don't know if you'll see this comment after 6 years but thank you! You just helped a high school student on picking a college major
Ok. Great video dude. Concise..... Forward....Engineer-like
Just subscribed. Thanks for the vid
great video, I can verify it helped someone
great video!
good point about not choosing biomedical science unless you want to go to grad school. Im current a biomed major thinking about switching to engineering :)
awesome video!
Biomedical engineering is a greatttt path :) what biomed research / innovation is coming up with lately is nuts! Nano tech and 3D printed organs... great time to be alive!
Hey Roxy! Did you end up switching to engineering?
How was it? I'm considering a bachelors in mechE with a lot of biomed projects on the side, and later, a masters in bioE. How did it work out for you?
bro i love you this vid helped me out so fucking much
Great advice, son!
Thank you! Those were great tips! I'm currently a Bioengineering major (I chose it because I love biology, technology, and medicine) but I find that I'm also very interested in sustainability and the environment and would love to work with that someday, more so than with healthcare. I'm very confused about what I should do :S
Any update on your decision? These are my areas of interest also
@@nickpavia9021 Hey! I actually decided to continue studying Bioengineering and have been loving it so far :) I also decided to minor in Environmental Science to still be able to pursue my interest in sustainability as well.
These are some good advices, why didn't I think of reverse engineering from the end of my life back to college? Thank you.
Thank you so much
Same major here. You look smart!
How does one look smart?
Great video 👍
What's your thought on civil engineering?
Definately helped me
Nice I'm a Mechanical Engineering student as well
Thank you, this was so helpful. I love chemistry and I'm not very technical. Because I'm not much of a technical person by nature, I didn't think engineering was for me. Many people have recommended it to me though. Even just hearing that chemistry is very different from chemical engineering was very informative. Again, thank you. (Still not sure what I want to do, but *very* informative video).
What did you end up choosing? How’s it going?
@@Happiness379 Law school 😅
really helpful video
I didn't understand the eleventh point, can someone explain it to me please
Did he mean Biomedical Engineering when he said "biomed"? And does anyone disaggree that I shouldn't study it if I don't intend to persue a graduate degree?
fair point well made sir. I'm an incoming college student and planning to take Computer Engineering :)
Well he didn't talk about the stuff you have to read. It's tough
Ty!
Wish I saw this earlier. I'm getting ready to go into my freshman year as a biomedical engineering major but finally realized that biomedE should plan for graduate school. Weed out courses are also super scary.
I just finished my first year of ChE and weed out courses are not that bad. In a nutshell, you need to: Study hard, finish all your homework, READ THE syllabus, ask questions when you don't understand something, and have fun. (I go to penn state by the way)
wow this is really good
Going back to school for engineering at 30, I wish more videos were like this
Great video
Oh the fingers...that was refreshing. 👍🏽
Should a applied math major minor in engineering?
I’m considering going back to community college do my basic and then transfer to a university to study mechanical engineering but.. I don’t wanna do that as a career. And, I haven’t been in school four years since, I graduate from high school and I don’t know a lot of math, but I wanna get my education in the university, because my mom wants me to get a education.
I surf, love anything mechanical like planes bikes cars. I always loved the design aspect of things. I applied for mechanical engineering, im ok with math decent in science. The only thing im doubting is the workload. Spending all day all night just to study seems terrible. I dont know. Im no stranger to hard work and determination though.
thank u so much
Thank you soo much for your video. it was really informational. Nevertheless, I'm interested in knowing what are your suggestions on which engineering schools to go to?
hey BlissfulSoul! I think it depends on what kind of engineering you want to study. What are you thinking?
Damn, aren't you wise. Great stuff, man.
Spot on
Thank you
Im 27. I did a lot of high school drafting and stuff and i love hand on jobs, but im terrible at math. Absolutly awful. I love the idea of being tech savy because i like computers and i love being able to watch something i made come to life. I just dont know if i have the can do attitude about math.
you’re not gonna leave with a 4.0 😹💯
Great presentation & very helpful
And sound hella smart. I need more friends like you
👁👁 thanks mate
5:33
Can you please explain number 11 in DETAILS?? And thanks for this helpful video ❤️
Mechanical seems awesome. I am interesting in doing a lot of things like renewable clean energy, aircraft design, AI, smart homes and developing ways to make our daily lives tasks be done more efficiently. But I don't think that there is a major that combines all of these so mechanical engineering is a good choice as it is broader. And good thing is that first year is general engineering so that you can decide later. I have just graduated high school and got admitted to the American University of Sharjah with a decent scholarship and I am so excited for the future.
Mohammad Ammar im in the same boat too and wondering what to do
you could do environmental engineering, it kinda is a bit different course wise, but that seems to be what you could be interested in
I think ima do both engineering and business
Informative
Thanks
I wish I had a 3.4 GPA. My first few years at community college ruined my GPA :(
"4. If you're a bit uncertain about what field uh within engineering to go into a broad one like mechanical or electrical will serve you well"
aww man, sucks that I'm deciding between one of these two
How tall are you?
Is chemical engineering a good alternative to biomedical engineering? At my school, chemical engineering students are the only engineering majors other than biomedical engineering students that take a life science classes. Should I get a degree in chemical engineering then masters in biomedical engineering or both a bachelor and masters in biomedical engineering? I really want to study/learn/work with something in bio. (sorry for all the questions but everything about college is just too stressful)
Questions are good, np at all. So many engineers solve biology-related problems. OSU's website has this info: "If you are interested in Drug Delivery or Pharmaceuticals take Chem E. Applications of engineering in biological sciences= BioMed. BioMaterials= materials science. Biomechanics= Mech E. Microdevices= Mech E or Electrical."
Which major is best might depend on your specific college too, for example OSU's biomechanics lab is housed under the mechanical engineering department. If you do both BS and MS in Biomed you'll have a less versatile pairing of degrees which could be limiting if something goes wrong, but you could make good contacts with relevant labs and professors in the major during your undergrad to set you up for when your masters research starts. If it helps make you less stressed: I've seen Biomed ppl hired to car companies, and I've seen Mech E's hired to medical device companies.
Thank you so much for replying. Yeah, I think will stick with chemical engineering and just take extra biology classes for now :D
Thanks for the vid! I'm a physics student, but I am interested in a masters in engineering as well!
Anthony Oceguera nice, I would highly recommend it. if it's not too late, look into double majoring in engineering with physics then an MBA. I just finished my undergrad in physics and I'm starting my masters in engineering in the fall, but I tried double majoring when I was a Junior and was advised to get a masters instead.
R Quan thanks for the advice! unfortanetly it won't be possible for me to double major at this time. Sounds exciting to begin your engineering program though! since you were a physics student, do you know how long it will take you to finish your engineering masters? will it take a year longer because of catch up courses?
It will only take me a year to get a Masters of Engineering. There is a difference between the Masters of Science and Masters of Engineering at my University. The former is usually meant for student with plans for a PhD in the field and the latter is for industry oriented students.
PS, pick up some coding classes with your undergraduate. The Software industry is projected to grow at a 17% rate in the US in the next 4 years. I highly recommend you get some experience. Physics is a wonderful and highly challenging degree, but its almost impossible to find a job with only a Physics Bachelors today. It is usually recommended to pursue a masters or a PhD to be admitted to industry.
R Quan wow that's short! thought it would take much longer since you didn't have an engineering bachelor, good to know though! And yes definitely. currently I'm learning python. I was told that was a good language to learn for technical fields.
Was this guy like 19 when he made this video? He is pretty wise for his age.
I really wanna invent stuff and wanted for years.
wow I’m literally gonna cry. I applied to like 2 colleges already for philosophy 😭 NOW I THINK I WANNA DO STEM FOR THE MONEYY
Hey, better to think about these stressful decisions right now vs after you’ve finished your philosophy degree
Sooo, how come no one ever mentions Architectural engineering?
Mahra A OSU has a separate school of architecture, it's not under the college of engineering. The program is design focused and less math based. The closest engineering degree OSU offers is Civil. Other schools might differ- but the fact plenty of schools split off architecture as a separate thing from engineering is why it sometimes gets left out of the discussion.
I'm only 14 and I'm opposed with engineering I'm going to do mechanical engineering 100%
Nothing matters anymore i am a souless husk made progmrammed to do what the society wants and my will is their will my actions are their actions my happiness is their hapiness my emotions are their emotionsx.
Hello,I love programming but my parents are "forcefully" advising me to do civil engineering because they are believe it has a better job market. They are willing to accept my choice though i don't want to let them down when there fears come true. Is it worth the risk to do computer engineering?
Love your videos BTW
If you become a great developer you'll make more than civil engineering will pay. Show your parents the average salary for software developers. Nothing to worry about, you'll be fine, just do applied software projects in addition to your course work so you learn the practical skills.
2 years late, but programming has a large market and good pay. My dad's a software engineer/programmer with good pay and he didn't finish college because he already knew the process and was bored. 😂
@@olivemorring3723 Thank you. I eventually had to pick Civil engineering engineering but there was a mysterious low intake of students in that course that year so I got an opportunity to switch to Computer systems engineering. How cool is that!! I am glad that now I am pursuing what I am passionate about and thank you for your reply. Although its a little bit late and cannot influence my choice I've already made, at least it gives me some reassurance and hope that there's some light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you 😊❤️❤️❤️.
@Jake Garcia He started out with a lower level job at a company- basically just reporting numbers in a spread sheet and things like that. He made a program that made his job simpler and shared it with some coworkers. Word got around to the boss. My dad thought he was in trouble when the boss asked, "Steve, did you create some sort of program you're using?" The boss asked to see how he did it. When my dad showed him, he asked where he learned it. My dad said he just created it and the boss gave him a promotion to a software engineering position. Now he works as a software engineer in bank security. This was also in the 90's, so I don't know if it could happen today.
Pick something your good at and like. Don't do what I did which was focus on Accounting and Computer Science and fail at both.
this... this video is what im looking for. you speak words of wisdom my dude... thank you.
i'll be back 5+ yrs later to tell u what i became cuz of this video.. (unless im dead lol)
How’s it going so far?
Do you think electrical engineering a good major too.
I'm considering going to OSU! What is the Computer Science and Engineering major like? Thanks for the video!
My knowledge of CSE unfortunately isn't great, although the department does seem to have a good reputation. You'll need to apply after the first 2-3 semesters in order to get into your specific engineering major, I think the cutoff for CSE is around a 3.0 gpa (most people make a 3.0). I've liked my experience, but I'm in another major so it's difficult to compare.
Computer science is a great field and will continue to be needed into the future. Go for it if you like to code!
What is CSE?
blueberry Velvet computer science engineering
You are incredibly handsome...blessed with good looks... Damn!!!
Yeah, his eyes are amazing, and i'm a heterosexual guy lol
farzana atta blessed with intelligence too
You aren't wrong.
Lol wtf
If this guy is still single nowadays it must be on purpose lol.
im probably way to young to be thinking about going to college but i really want to be an engineer
Awesome! And it's never too soon to think about the future, Time passes fast
its never too early to think about college man
I think it's great that you already know in which direction you want to go into. what type of engineering are you thinking?
STEMinine sorry I got to your comment late but mechanical engineering. I felt like I’ve always had a indistinct too put stuff together and my grandpa had all the tools in world which helps a ton.
Alta's Projects thank you for inspiring me to take this path and prepared. Im in the first semester of 11th grade and have a good idea of where I’m going, hopefully getting a degree in mechanical engineering.
hey man Im going to nrc for rescue robot next year
Awesome! The rescue robot course is such a fun/interesting challenge, good luck!
That's great, are you an engineer?
"Don't choose biomed unless you want to do grad school." Best advice ever, a Biomedical Engineering undergrad student myself. My advisor said about 60% of biomeds that he has worked with do grad school. It's alright for pre-med and research (grad school).
Tommy Tran what’s the point of going to grad school if u have a good degree already ?
Your eyes are nice
O state babyyyyy
I can see your brain through your eyes. Amazing eyes, I wish I had a pair.
BARTETMEDIA pair of my balls
pretty eyes
Lol
i only clicked cause he looked cute, i was not disappointed :)
Lol wtf
i turned 12 2 weeks ago and im watching this because im REALLY good at engineering but my advice would be that understanding IS better than actually learning
You're 12 chill bro lol
