Wow the modern wheel takes longer to boot up than the entire 2012 swap procedure. I doubt it's functional in the first few seconds so the driver can't select a gear until its ready...
if you see clearly in 2012 the engine was already running so you just have to put the steering wheel on while in bahrain the engine stopped , so you have to restart the engine and then boot the wheel

The halo wasn’t the problem. The problem was the new wheel takes forever to boot up and when it did it didn’t boot up correctly or there was some software problem and they retired the car. The cars in 2012 were a little less complex in terms of the steering wheel

the 2012 season was a disaster, they destroyed lewis' title charge at least as bad as ferrari did last year or maybe worse as i don't remember lol, but it forced lewis to leave 4 mclaren and rest is history
This comparison is very unfair for a lot of reasons. Piastri was already having car issues, the halo is in the way, the car was dropped from the jacks, and there’s a lot more technology involved that takes longer to start up.
2012 had much simpler internals and the wheel did not have to display that much information. Most of the functionalities on the wheel were pretty simple and is mostly adjusted on the monocoque-attached dials instead of the wheel, hence the V8 era cars are pretty reliable, electronically
If i remember well it was like 5 stops and 1 penalty. And I wouldn't say that was strategy (a priori plan), they should be Delphic Oracle to make 100 % prognosis about such crazy wet long race...
What race did you see? The problem wasn't the steering wheel! He had a mechanical problem and they thought it could be because of the steering wheel, but it wasn't solved.
Plot twist: They wheeled him into the garage because they didn't have the heart to send him back out and get memed the next day for a 2 minute pit stop
to reboot the electronics in the car. They were having sensor issues that's making the power unit go haywire, in order to rule out if the control unit on the steering wheel is causing the issue, they replace the wheel altogether to see if the sensors would fix itself that way.
for the 2012 footage, it could be that some buttons or dials on the steering wheel is not working as intended and is keeping a few non-optimal settings stuck, so they just replace the wheel to make sure those settings can be turned off.
