Love your discussion on the "mean girl" aspect of Aphrodite. Mythology was most frequently recorded by the men and I've always pondered if they way she was discussed amongst a women was different to the way it was recorded.
I'm obviously way late to this party, but Plato vocally hated the way that most deities were depicted in mythology. He considered them sacrilege, because they depicted the gods as cruel and capricious and pretty nasty, while the reality of them was a lot more coolness and a lot less nasty.
When Aphrodite is in, she is ALL IN. A tour de force of passion that will shake your foundation in the best way. No wonder there are so many misconceptions about her. She brings the truth.
I love my beautiful Queen, Goddess, Sister, Mother, Friend Aphrodite. She is such a positive energy to work with, and I wouldn't trade the energy she makes me feel, and the lessons she has thought me thus far for the world. Praise, Peace and Love be to Lady Aphrodite and her flock of doves (aka her worshipers).
Aphrodite teaches me to love myself and others, erasing shame in sexuality and is a very protective energy in the sense of boundaries and feelings. I worship her with Eros and its incredibel how that inpacts my sexual love life. She teaches patience and gratitude as well as trusting the healing powers of selflove and trust in the love that will heal and guide us to the right persons at the right time.❤
Hail Aphrodite, may she keep blessing you. Aphrodite is widely worship by males too, just like me. She was even Julius Caesar’s patron. Also, in Poseidon and Athena’s myth, Aphrodite voted for Athena to be patron of Athens (so i doubt they had any animosity, the Gods are constantly competing. In the end, they are a family and stick together by Hestia’s power). About Persephone and Aphrodite, their myth dates back to ancient Mesopotamia, where Ishtar and Ereshkigal were worshiped as sisters. Actually, Aphrodite and Persephone are sisters in Greek Mythology canon if we take in consideration Aphrodite’s alternate parentage of Zeus and Dione. The Descent of Inanna and Adonis’ myth have many parallels (Goddess of love enters the Underworld to beg for their fallen lover; both Aphrodite and Ishtar cohabited love from Earth so people/animals aren’t able to reproduce, similar to what Demeter did with famine too; it’s a seasonal myth; etc). Aphrodite’s Mysteries are more ancient than even Judaism, and were introduced to the Greek world through Cyprus and Cytherea, where she was worshipped as a war goddess and Queen of Heaven too (hence her title of Urania and her right to the Heavens as Uranos’ daughter). Her popularity was such that she ended amongst the Olympians, but with less titles because Hera, Athena and Ares already had her domains fully covered, except of course her love, beauty and sex aspects... but we shouldn’t forget her roots, it’s were most of her Mysteries lay. Actually, I recommend reading ancient hymns dedicated to Inanna or Ishtar, it can give you an insight of Aphrodite’s true nature and early power (Ishtar was, after all, the most powerful Goddess amongst the Immortals in Ancient Mesopotamia).
I've been doing research on Aphrodite and right away I noticed how misogynistic Roman/Greek mythology is. One thing that bugs me a lot is that mythology and media make her as this super sexualized being who can't control her urges. And also hate towards other women or goddesses. Although my favorite depiction of her is from Disney's Hercules series. She's sassy, smart, and tells it as it is lol.
I never had a good view of aphrodite until now. She really wanted to work with me probably cause Im very insecure im non binary i think aphrodite wants me to really start playing around with that
I love your take on this! When I draw Aphrodite, I usually draw her pretty feminine, since that is one of the many ways I find people beautiful. I am also one of those people who worried about if I could worship Poseidon + Athena at the same time (spoiler: they didn’t care too much) Ps. Theoi is pronounced Thei the oi at the end is one of a couple of ways that Greek makes the “e” sound.
Thank you for clearing up the misconceptions, never saw Aphrodite as having terrible flaws and prejudices found in humans, she is so much wiser than that. I remember having a dream of Aphrodite as well. She was very kind and took me through an area bathed in a brilliant golden light and many colors, the most beautiful thing I ever seen. She told me she never forgot about me and I felt the love she had for me in that sacred place. I wanted to ask her where I was, I was informed that it was a lesser known paradise called Venus or the plane of Venus (not a reference to the planet, but to Aphrodite herself). With such kindness and lack of judgement, it's hard to imagine Aphrodite as petty, picky, opinionated and judgemental. She's truly beautiful inside and out and deserves respect. ☺
She truly is a wonder! And I def agree with you, it's really hard to see her as petty, jealous, and cruel. I've noticed, as i said in the episode, a lot of those negative views of her are based on misogynistic stories and tropes that continue to be perpetuated today.
How do you interpret Aphrodite’s role in the story of Eros and Psyche? I’ve tried to find a different way of looking at her in that story but it’s hard to find anything that doesn’t paint her as basically the “toxic mother-in-law”. Do you have a different perception or know a good resource for one?
Well it is important to remember that the Eros and Psyche myth is actually Roman. Also personally i don't put much stock into mythology in general. Because of how misogynistic these stories are it is not surprising Aphrodite rarely ever gets painted in a nice light. Women in general in mythology aren't about supporting other women, so it isn't surprising when jealous vain Aphrodite is depicted punishing other ladies. So my interpretation of the Eros and Psyche myth is that it's just a story made by men and that we as a community should be making our own modern myths to reflect our own values and how we perceive the gods.
Highly recommend Martin Lowenthal's Alchemy of the Soul: The Eros and Psyche Myth As a Guide to Transformation. He shows Aphrodite as the Great Mother, determined to make sure her daughter-in-law can be in an equal partnership with a god. He doesn't see her as vain and toxic, but as someone who actually brought them together and works with both of them so they can be in partnership.
@@TeaWiththeGods I've been pondering the origins of the Eros and Psyche myth for a while now. The VERSION we get from Apuleius is definitely patriarchal, but considering it's referred to as an "Old Wive's tale" in the story and there are statues of Eros and Psyche from at least 400 years prior, the original story might have been much more goddess-oriented. Perhaps even a story used as instruction for Aphrodite's initiates and priestesses to explain the journey to becoming a priestess. And when Aphrodite does act harshly, she is fulfilling the role shamans have had with initiates for centuries - a hard task master, but behind that is a well of love.
The Pastel Priestess thank goodness!! I’ve been trying to catch you live streams for a while and I always end up missing them! But I’m glad you’re still on here!
Disappointed to see, or rather hear, the implication that asexuality equates to a disinterest in sex once again. Enjoyed the rest, but not as much as I know I would have otherwise.
I didn't mean to imply that all Asexuality is is a disinterest in sex. That truly was not at all my intention. The point I was trying to make is that regardless of ones relationship or attitude towards sex, Aphrodite will welcome them. I've gotten a lot of questions from Asexuals worried that Aphrodite wouldn't accept them because of their sexuality so I wanted to make sure I addressed it in this episode. Im sorry if I did not handle it correctly and I'll be more mindful of that going forward.
