Having lived in that area for the first thirty years of my life I was excited by the title "Driving through Southend-on-Sea". The views of Hadleigh Castle and Leigh-on-Sea brought back many happy memories, but my heart sank when you turned off the seafront shortly after sighting Southend Pier and the video ended, so there was really no driving through Southend-on-Sea at all, you only got as far as Westcliff, I was hoping that you would continue driving along the seafront to Thorpe Bay, before going back through the Town of Southend, and possibly finish up at the old Priory in Prittlewell which, like the Castle is more in line with your usual interest. However, it was still a great video Jess and Chris, keep them coming!! 👍

Southend is my Hometown and I was born in Rochford and grew up in the town until I was 39 before moving to Suffolk. I was hoping you would have filmed going on the pier train and the high street, driving through Thorpe Bay, Shoeburyness and back through Southchurch.

Hiya Jess and Chris, so happy to see you survived storm Bert. 😊. I was thinking about you last Sunday and wondering if the weather would prevent you from venturing out..Thank you for braving the elements my friends . Southend on sea is used by many Londerners as a convenient escape to the seaside for a short break or day trip and it is very busy during the Summer season. Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving.
Not as windy this weekend so not too bad for the 1st of December. Have a super Sunday and lovely week ahead.
Take care and see you soon my friends. xx❤🇺🇸🇬🇧

      Hiya Stephen,
Oh yes, we appreciate the warning! We do our best not to let the weather stop us from getting out and exploring. There is just too much to see and explore.
We definitely see why the Londoners visited Southend-on-Sea it was beautiful even with overcast and high winds. We can't wait to share where we went over our Thanksgiving holiday. We definitely didn't celebrate it like we normally have in the past, but this year will be one we remember forever! 🤍 Jess & family x

Good old"Sarfend"! The Essex coast is a n unappreciated delight. You must go to the 7th century church, St Peters at Bradwell Juxta Mare and take in the wide expanses of salt marsh that are neither land nor sea.

Lovely video. I have lived in Essex all my life and not seen the castle! Amazed by the places you find, especially as it is quite a drive away for you guys.
Shame you turned left at 27:12. Had you carried on straight you would have seen the main resort of Southend with pier, cafes, cliffs and amusements! That road on the seafront takes you all the way to Shoeburyness.
I hope when you return to the US that you will hold beautiful memories of the UK in your hearts. Best wishes.

Theres lots of these old ruins scattered around the UK. It's such a shame many fell into ruins, and in many cases only a footprint remaining. Obviously it adds that element of mystery to the place, but still, itd be great to see these places in their former glory

As a Londoner who moved to Essex a few years ago I remember many times from my childhood visiting my Aunt and Cousins with my mum and dad and siblings. Sadly, my Aunt died from Covid during lockdown after losing her husband a couple of yrs before. Many fond memories of Benfleet which is close to Southend-on-sea. My Aunts husband made a lot of money from the rag trade when he use to live in London when they were young and moved to Benfleet. Also, one of my neighbours recently moved to Leigh-on-sea which is close to Southend-on-sea as well. That’s how a lot of traditional, cockney, East End folk lived back in the day. Lived in the slums of the old East End in London not long after the Second World War and to better themselves, moved further out into Essex to buy property. Thanks Jess & Chris for the great video. You travel quite far, from as far as Norfolk down to the south of England in Essex.

Fascinating look at (again) part of UK I've never been. The little walk would certainly 'blow the cobwebs away' as we say in UK. Not that many urban areas in UK are 'cities'. We differentiate hamlets, villages, towns and cities (cities normally the largest & have a cathedral eg York, Manchester etc.) Although now there is so much building going on former villages and towns are all joining up, for miles and miles. I guess most of the wires/poles are for telephone landlines.

Get yourselves over to Burnham on Crouch when spring arrives. Plenty of foody places, a coastal walk and a boat trip to view the seals. Then travel to St.Peters near Bradwell, Essex.

We were there recently for our annual walk along the pier. Lovely to see you in Essex, it is such a pretty county with lovely big skies and pretty villages. I really think you would like the chapel of St Peter's on the Wall, it is one of the oldest chapels in England. It was built 660 - 662 AD from stone scavenged from a Roman Fort near Bradwell on the Dengie Peninsular. You could go from there for a nice lunch at Burnham-on-Crouch with its lovely Georgian river front.

So glad you made it to my home city. Can’t believe you turned off the seafront just as you were getting to where the action is! (The town centre you turned off for is Westcliff, if you’d carried on you’d have got to Southend City Centre). Plenty more for you to see if you ever come back, but I hope you had a great time anyway.
Also if you’re not aware, Hadleigh Castle Country Park is where the mountain biking was held for the 2012 Olympics. Hence the big bike statue on the roundabout.

Hi guys, it;s a shame about Hadleigh Castle, i saw a huge crack from top to bottom so it may not last , Thankyou for visiting my City of Southend on Sea , i live in Shoeburyness .Have you heard about an American liberty ship that ran aground in the Thames Estuary between Southend and Sheerness in 1944 with 1400 tons of explosives still on board, The Americans salvaged some of the ordinance but the wreck became unstable and they had to leave the rest .

Southend on Sea was the go-to place when I was a child, being only 40 miles from London. The area around the pier is too touristy but great for children. The tide goes out a long way but because the sea bed is flat it is also dangerous. When the tide comes in you don't want to be a mile out in the estuary as it gets deep very quickly, faster than you can run. The castle ruins were interesting. It may have been built in the wrong place but a lot is still standing, a testament to the builders.

    • @jasonpage9986
      @jasonpage9986 Годину тому

Oh with the castle, it was demolished after the south side of it started to sag. They just took most of the stone to reuse it for old road i think. What's left of it was left on purpose.

Christmas markets are now popping up worth a visit to one local to you . I'm wondering if you ever feel closed in as we are a smaller country ? I think you'll get a reverse culture shock when you go back to the states what with all the huge roads etc 😊❤

Again, really interesting to see somewhere I have never been. Indeed, I've never been further south in Essex than Clacton, and that was to Butlins as a young kid in the mid-1960s!
All those sands and flats you were seeing, dictated British history from the stone age to recent years perhaps more than any other factor. As most of south-east England is fairly flat, with so many inlets, it was so easy for invaders and near-impossible to defend! Wave after wave of invaders made the journey over the lower North Sea and the upper Channel, up the Thames estuary there, and elsewhere all round the east and south-east coasts, one after another. All settled, and in turn were pushed back westwards by the next wave, right up to the Normans. This led to the incredible melting pot of races that became modern Britons, especially the modern English. Had the coast facing continental Europe been like the West coast, with its extensive cliffs and mountains and land generally far less suited to farming, historians say we would have had far fewer invasions. And been a far different people to what we evolved into (and probably all speaking Welsh, or even older languages!)
That major exposure to invasion continued after the Normans , as you indicated at the castle. In more recent times from the Armada to Napoleon to the Kaiser to Hitler. Which is why a cornerstone of British foreign policy, for many centuries, was always to stop the low countries nearest across the sea from being, or being taken over by, strong powers that might threaten invasion. Those many miles of extensive, vulnerable coastal flats have been such a major driver of our history. And of Britain's regular interventions in continental Europe.
Snow last time, now wind. What next time, I wonder...? Thanks again.

@@adriangoodrich4306 Did you know that off East Beach in Shoeburyness, they have the Boom, which goes out a mile on the mud flats. It was build to detect enemy vessels during the Cold War, and a large underwater net went between another Boom which connects to Kent. The net covered the deepest area, to prevent submarines coming up the Thames. Also on those mud flats is a medieval pathway which connects to Foulness Island. It remains publicly accessible despite being the most 'dangerous path in Britian'. There in Shoeburyness, Gunners park, has an area which is marked by medieval settlers, and a Danish settlement.
