I love overnight train reports! Something so cozy about those berths.
Me too!
And apart from a broken hand dryer this video was well stocked, clean and in good working order!
lmao
I love sleeper train reviews! This one seemed amazing. Definitely something to add to the bucket list.
Thanks for taking us along with you, Dylan!
Glad you enjoyed 😁
Wow, that interior is so utilitarian in the sleeper car. If they used any more gray paint, it would be a battleship.
Nordic style
🙃
My thoughts exactly. Pretty drab
I rather like the functionality. Given that the trip is good value (for Sweden and Norway, which have such a high cost of living), one can't expect a 5 star hotel on wheels.
The sleepers are very old - one day they might replace them but don't hold your breath now Vy has taken over.
wow. a dream come true for the battle hardened passagers of yesterday..;I
Just such lovely snowy weather, especially for a train ride .
You should definitely do that trip in the summer! I'm so curious of that beauty when all is not hiding in the dark.
How relaxing to be riding in your comfy warm cozy cocoon as the night train slashes through the icy cold and snowy arctic darkness.
The toggle switch you were fiddling with is the emergency braking system only to be used in case of a crisis, it is the equivalent of the communication cord on trains here in the uk. haha. Joking one side I do enjoy your weekly videos immensely because they are entertaining and informative and I always look forward to the next - well done.
The fact that the train was 45 late before even starting is very common on the Nattåg or Night train. I was once on a train that arrived into Stockholm 8 hours late! They usally blame it on ”Sen tågvändning” that basicilly means that the train to the end station is like 4 hours late
this is a swedish train, but as a norwegian, our sleep cabin trips is one of my favourite things. whilst they look very military and uniform, theres a reason for that. the beds are comfortable, the privacy is exquisite, and the scenery is just... immaculate... watching outside your window is wonderful. you can ask for another pullow by the way. that being said only first class japanese trains feel like true luxury.
Best view from a station I've seen has to be Alp Grum on the St Moritz (Switz) to Tirano (Italy) line ... well worth doing the journey and getting off at Alp Grum and waiting for the train behind, just for the view.
Thanks for another great trip report ... this journey has been on my bucket list for a very long time.
I think El Chorro on the Málaga to Sevilla classic line takes some beating for its view
I endorse this opinion? It's spectacular.
I am heading to Luleå in early summer. So excited!
I believe that this was the first use of 2 toilet selfies in 1 video. Real Scorsese stuff!!!!!!
I love Sweden. Had a fabulous 2 years working there for Hector Rail. Done all of that. Great video.
This trip in the summer would provide material for a 1h vid. 20 min vid capturing an 18h journey leaves you with the feeling it was on the shorter side.
@@dazzlingdaz187 I'm positive you didn't fully understand my comment stating "it was dark".
To be honest, if you are travelling in Norway or Sweden at this time of the year and want to some of the beautiful scenery, especially Oslo-Bergen, then you should take amorning train so you are travelling as much as possible in daylight. I took the morning train from Narvik to Lulea (arrived about 6pm there) and I would recommend it over doing the afternoon train from Narvik when it's already pretty much dark anyway. The first part of the trip has some stunning scenery after leaving Narvik and unfortunately that got missed in this video.
Spent the night in one of these compartments myself up to Luleå and I absolutely love the comfort of these wagons
Arctic circle and Northern Lights on my bucket list too!
What a wonderful video Dylan, thank you so much!!
Thanks, Dylan! I loved your video. In fact, I love all of your videos. But we always have preferences. This video you made is one of my favorites from your beautiful, beautiful channel. First, it's the North and I love these landscapes, I love the cold. 3:29 represents for me one of the most beautiful landscapes that you showed us, it's magnificent. This is exceptional. And then you explain everything very well in detail. Everything goes there, the bed, the comfort, the temperature. I love your way of presenting. Plus, it's a night train and night trains are some of my favorites. In addition, you travel 18 hours on the train, what a dream!!! Your room is beautiful. Your room is very comfortable. I don't know how you manage to film so well. You are remarkable. You are cheerful. A huge thank you to you. Thank you, Dylan!
The view to the north from the platform at Narvik Stn is one of my favourite railway views. I have a shot of it hanging in my living room!
What a great trip, despite the landscape is dark when you departing.
Yes, actually at this time of year, it's better to take the morning train.
I’m not sure how you got from Bristol on one travel repot to Norway on the next one. It’s like you were abducted by aliens. What I really like about your videos is that you usually take the time to show the departure with the train moving slowly away and then same again slowing down at the finish. There is a real sense of a journey beginning and then ending. You could possibly show more of the actual scenery, maybe more of entering and leaving outskirts of towns along the way. On the whole though, you have a really well thought out format. Very genuine. Keep them coming, great videos.
They are not postet in a chronological order
@@thelegotechnicchannel1256 or maybe aliens are in play here?
@@beorlingo it's not aliens. It's just a black helicopter.
@@thelegotechnicchannel1256 that's what they want you to belive.
Winter looks so much better in the dusky light :) Nice train adventure!
Nothing like an overnight train…especially in the Arctic! Your videos are inspiring me to take more of these types of trains!
Keep em comin !!
This is one of the amazing journeys boss done by you. I suggest you to explore more such type of trips as I could see your broad smile in mirror ironically seeing how much have enjoyed the journey. More power to you Dylan.
Fantastic to sleep well with those extreme weather conditions out there. So emblematic train, cool... !!
Need more swedish trains and SJ coverage man, keep it coming.
Looked pretty decent. 9 hours of sleep is pretty good; some people don't even get 9 hours of sleep in their own beds! Always love reports about sleeper services :).
certainly added to my list thanks Dylan
Greetings from Poland
A wonderful journey - thanks for taking me along. A superb video, excellent commentary explaining everything any traveller would want to know. I thought the cost for the two of you wasn't bad at all, in comparisan to payments you've made on other sleeper trains. A good nights sleep always helps. From your comments, better than you've had on other sleeper journies.
Thanks again for the great film. Stay safe and I'll see you again soon
Glad you enjoyed the vid 😁
Fun fact. Those freight trains you see in Kiruna belong to the Swedish mining company LKAB. Because iron ore is so heavy, the track between Kiruna and the 2 ports of Luleå and Narvik has been built to handle and axle load of 30 metric tonnes, the highest in Europe
Love your videos so much. They're so satisfying and interesting. Pls Keep on 👍👍
Thanks a lot!
I've been on a similar train, from Bødo to Trondheim and from Trondheim to Bødo, and had an absolutely amazing experience! The trip was life changing, and the train trip certainly added onto the experience :)
The video looks great, thanks for sharing your experiences!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.I love how you do the wave in the mirror.
Jasper station in Canada has a cracking view. The five day journey from Toronto to Vancouver is pretty special as well.
It’s not 5 days, I think? I travelled from Montreal to Vancouver decades ago and it was three days. It was a spectacular experience. The views were amazing. There’s no other way to experience the vastness of travelling across the country.
@@ozgirl45 it was when I did it. Four days to Kamloops. Then one from there in. Wasn’t able to go direct, had to get a hotel in Kamloops.
I recall having breakfast as the train travelled down the Fraser River valley. One of the highlights of my train travelling experiences (equal to going through Switzerland).
I think the view from Jasper station is at least a match - if not superior
@@ozgirl45 it's 4 full days and 4 nights now, the shedule wa increased due to freight traffic congestion. The freight railroads own the tracks and while they don't purposly delay passenger trains, it is a lot easier for a disptcher to put a relatively short passenger train with a few dozen passengers into a siding to wait rather than a two-mile long express freight loaded with containers that pay the rent. The Vancouver-Toronto "Canadian" arrived 12 hours late last night!
Excellent one and I was waiting for this video.Thank you for showing the beautiful scene at station while waiting for the tran journey.
Glad you enjoyed it 😁
This was great!!
We all love a sleeper! I’m taking the ÖBB Nightjet next week from Vienna to Amsterdam 👍 Great video Dylan.
Snalltaget have just introduced a seasonal Malmo, Sweden to Zell am See, Austria night train. having been to both Sweden, and Zell am See, I would live, if I was in Europe to be doing that train! But the Nightjets are great too and I hope to get back to Europe and also do your one sometime :-)
A real surprise to find you above the Arctic Circle, and in winter, too. Your experience shows that these trains are warm and comfortable if you can get almost ten hours sleep. The food seemed fairly basic, but these days at least they had some. Overall, a nice trip and really a decent price for so long a trip in winter. I'm looking forward to that airplane ride!
A nice video the train seemed very modern I enjoyed seeing the snow it looks very beautiful.
very nice to be with you. thank you
Muy entretenido e informativo. Gracias! Saludos desde Buenos Aires, Argentina!
thank for the sleeper ride this time
Very good Dyln, I did this trip in the late 80s it was magical then, so its been good to see ( ok it was dark) this trip again
Spectacular..
nice way to tick off your bucket list. Glad things worked out for you and your GF! Safe trip!
Thanks!
They should call that train “The Polar Express”. The view from Circular Quay station in Sydney, Australia is also considered amongst the best in the world. Yet in a totally different way.
I did the trip (but on the morning train - which is better if you want to see some scenery!) and it was a fab day (after a big arctic storm the day before) and I got a great pic looking up the platform past the station building and train to the fjord mountains. I have it hanging in my living room :-) Going up to and along the top of the fjords after leaving Narvik is amazing!
Really interesting report, I enjoyed it. The train looks comfortable and a great price. Good job!
Great video and great diplomacy on the decor, he he....
Fascinating trip - looks great! Might have to investigate doing something similar.
Well filmed. Informative too
Thanks for another great video Dylan and so interesting too. How amazing tht you can start a sleeper journey above the Arctic CIrcle! I wonder if it would be worth doing the trip again in summer to see more of the Arctic scenery.
Excellent video again (they all are!) Very good explanations and comments....It is a bit as if we were on the spot!I always enjoy watching your videos they make me travel without leaving my home.On top of that the very british accent! What more do we want?Bonjour de Québec au Canada.....
Very good .I did the day train about 3 years ago well worth doing the trip in daylight
In February 2022 I made my first winter roadtrip up there and all the way to the North Cape. I did similar trips to northern Sweden and NOrway several times in the summer already, but winter was an entirely different driving experience up there
great journey. I'd love to follow your lead. Nice to see that you had a partner along for the ride. Great moments need to be shared. See you on Monday!
I did go on the night train on a shorter journey in the seated cart, and the seat was able to be tilted back quite a bit which was a big plus
Ooh! Having wondered about you saying "we" instead on "me" in a few videos, I'm delighted to know there's a Miss Travel-Reports!
"...and through these doors takes you back out into the freezing cold..." :)
and a stunning vista looking north along the platform!
Enjoyed the trip!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent informative video Dylan.
Thanks Michael!
That button/switch you couldn't figure out was the Launch Nukes!!!!
Amazing 🥰🥰☺️🌹
Worth doing again in the summer
Great trip report
Thanks!
I love your sleeper train trip reports! And your normal ones too
Pleased to hear 😁
I love the Archer/Bob's Burgers tattoo!
Great video !!
Thanks!
Another great trip review. Looks like a beautiful albeit expensive trip
Wow Dylan what a much better format for your videos i much prefer the narration version you have now rather than subtitles which people can still use if they wish by pressing the cc button which I’m sure you’ve realised.
A great video and such well informed narration thanks mate 🙌❤️
Cheers!
i love your sleeper train reviews dylan mate id say i prefer the uk sleepers gwr caladian sleeper but for this one i enjoyed it great interia toilets spotless and everything epic
I haven't done the Caledonian one (it's on MY bucket list!) but I've done the Cornish Riviera and I agree it's marvellous. It's my 2nd fav only after VR Finnish Railways night trains which are best I've been on IMO.
Nice smile 😁
Great room - would hate to be sleeping in the top bunk! Thanks for the Video.
Would love to see you re-review this in the height of the summer...
Excellent Enterprising Endeavor💐 🤝 Hearty Greetings from India 🇮🇳
Another good report. Its a geographical area I want to explore by train.
Thanks!
I would also recommend instead of going to Stockholm, going to Lulea and then catching one of the reinstated train services (in 2019 I had to go up to the border by bus intead but they just restarted train services for the first time since about 1991 last year) up to Haparanda and Tornio (Towns on the Swedish and Finnish border) and then taking one of the fantastic VR Finnish Railways night trains from there to Helsinki (with a Russian tourist visa you can even go on from there on either the fast Allegro day trains or a night train to St Petersburg which I also highly recommend like Stockholm as a beautiful winter city).
Compared to the VY and SJ night trains, if you buy well in advance, you can also get a deluxe cabin including shower on the VR night train for a significantly cheaper price though it's flexible so if you change you may need to pay fare difference (happened to me due to an Arctic storm that changed my dates by one day - something else to consider if travelling in this region at this time of year!)
HI Dylan. Glad you were able to tick this off your list! I travelled in Sweden and Norway at the same time of year in 2019 and did the day train Narvik to Lulea and then afterwards the night train on VR Finnish Railways from Northern Finland near the Swedish Border to Helsinki, and I would say the same thing about the meals in Sweden (even though at the time the train was operated by SJ not VY) not being too flash while the restaurant car on the VR night trains in Finland put out real meals, and **on tap** Finnish beer. I had Swedish meatballs which were delicious and absolutely outdid the same microwaved option available on the SJ trains (A national shame hahaha!)
Great to hear you were able to have a really good night's sleep so good value for the money as you say. Having also taken Nightjet etc single cabin trains, I think you are right about the cost being roughly the same. I took two night trains in Norway and again price and experience was about the same. Same for a single cabin on the Japanese Sunrise Izumo and Seto night trains. I'd only say that from experience if you can get an advance single on the GWR Cornish Riviera Night Train you can get in my opinion a better value price that includes something of a breakfast too. Nightjet also gives you a breakfast for their single cabin. The VY Norwegian domestic night trains as of 2019 did allow you to get breakfast at a nice hotel near the station after arrival (except for the Trondheim-Bodo one).
Having travelled at the same time of year, I do think you erred (as you readily admitted yourself on the Oslo-Bergen video) in the timing of the trains you took. If you wanted the night train to Stockholm, you could've still taken the morning train from Narvik and then had a rest at Boden or Lulea and caught the night train from there. At Lulea where I stayed one night, it's quite cool that the coastline around the city freezes over and you can go and walk on the ice including under a car bridge going from the city to another locality! Btw it's pronounced Lu-low. Yes it caught me out at first too!
Even though I'm from NZ and we have nothing like the winter hours in the Nordic countries I knew daylight hours were limited. My tip to anyone watching these videos who wants to do Norway and Sweden during Winter - take the morning train if you want to see much scenery! For both the Oslo-Bergen and Oslo-Trondheim routes, the scenery is such, that it really is a shame to miss it. Likewise Narvik-Boden/Lulea, especially at the start of the trip from Narvik going up to and along the top of the fjords is fantastic!
Still anyway, as usual a great video. if you haven't done the VR Finnish Night Trains, that also needs to be on your bucket list! IMHO it's the best one I've done (if you get the deluxe), and other vloggers who have done it such as Simply Railways have also rated it as their best or one of. And if done at the same time of year, you can get the same in between carriage snowy look LOL. Maybe at the end of this year, a visit to Santa's hometown will be in order :-)
The steam locomotive preserved at Narvik station is called Bifrost and was used in the construction of the rail link from Norway to Sweden. Definitely worth more than a passing glance if you start or finish a rail journey there.
And the view down the platform looking north is one of the best!
Excellent review, keep up the good work. When will you do a review on the Australian trains........ lol joke(covid)
Nice
Sorry you did not make the trip in the summer. The route from Narvik to Kiruna has some pretty spectacular views at places. The railway was specifically built to carry iron ore from the mine in Kiruna to Narvik as the port is ice-free also during winter. This is still the primary purpose of the line. Possibly interesting is that my maternal grandfather was a manager maintaining the line, and my mom grew up in many of the small villages that you passed on the way.
He could still get the great views in Winter, he just needed to get the smaller, two carriage morning train (if it was still running of course). That's what I took on a beautiful cold Winter's day in January 2019. And coming from a non-snowbound country, I don't want to see 24hrs of daylight (until 8.30pm in NZ is enough!), I want to see snow! Lot's of it!
Hey there, been riding these many times and I definitely agree with you! I would suggest riding the SJ Snabbtåg from Stockholm to Umeå which is a very interesting route!
That was a great trip report !!! This trip is on my bucket list!!!
Just wondering exactly how many of each cars were on the train?
Thanks Dylan
Talking of bucket lists - I’ve just booked The Ghan and Indian Pacific for November and January in Australia I’m hoping it will be more 27°C, though your reports are ever increasing my bucket list!
Another vlogger, Simply Railways did Le Oceane from Montreal to Halifax recently. That looked fantastic (Think Mr Seat 61 also did and made a video within last couple of years) so that's one of the ones, alongside Slovakian Railways ZSSK, night train that Dylan recently raved about (and DocAustin also has done a couple of great reviews of) are the ones on my bucket list. The caledonian of course too! I have done GWR to Penzance and highly recommend. The Sunrise Izumo/Seto in Japan is also a great experience (especially when you leave Tokyo at night).
If or when I win the lottery, Scandanavia is on the bucket list, although I would rather do it in either mid-season (Spring or Autumn). It's been a while since I last travelled on a sleeper but the memories are still there. Almost need to win the lottery to be able to afford it down here in Australia, let alone Scandanavia. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Tip for travelling in Norway, and Norwegian trains. Cheapest food to buy (and it's very popular there) is polse, or American hotdogs. That's what I often ate hahaha!
Dylan, I hope you get a chance to do the Narvik/Kiruna stretch in daylight - it's spectacular scenery.
In the summer it´s light almost 24/7 up here so you could make the most of the trip in "daylight".
Nice train and interesting report as usual. I expect it's more to do with the level of thermal insulation than the heating that makes the train so snug, probably better than the majority of homes in the UK.
Dylan's got his old school parka out for this one
Great to see this report, I've driven north to the Artic Circle in summer, but would never do so in winter, however by train is a different matter. Shame you didn't get to see the northern lights whilst in Narvik, these are rather hit & miss. Train looks functional and OK rather than luxury, splitting and joining another train is a new one for me. Just thinking of -17c brings chills to the bones, thankfuly there was no wind or it would have been even worse!
Thanks!
Yeah I went up to Bodo (Northern terminus of Norwegian network), and then flew with Wideroe up to Tromso for a few days before coming back by bus (wish the rail network went up there!) to Narvik and getting the train and at no stage despite being January did I see the lights. Apparently they were wonderful the day BEFORE I arrived in Tromso. Always the way!
Later on on my trip I went for a walk in -15c St Petersburg and half my moustache and beard froze LOL!
-17°C is a rather normal winter day behind the mountain range there; COuld as well get temperatures of -30°C there.
Just this February I went on a roadtrip all the way up to the North Cape
Hope you managed to look around Stockholm - it's a beautiful city. Don't know how much it's changed since I was there over 40 years ago,
Stockholm Stn as Dylan showed in another recent video from the same trip is one of my favourite stations for a start (it was certainly as Dylan having the christmas vibe going on which was I thought when I travelled there at the same time in 2018). The view coming into Stockholm Central from the south is also one of my favourite railway views coming into a city. And of the course the Gamle district is beautiful too. Definitely want to go back again!
We did this train from Gallivare to Stockholm in August 2012; we really enjoyed it
A good night's sleep was had by both of us
One difference was that there was a Bistro Car all the way from Gallivare and the food was better than you had
Cutbacks since Vy took over from SJ. The old bistro has gone sadly.
Great video! I've concocted an itinerary that would take the sleeper into Narvik, then flip back to Boden, rail to Haparanda, bus to Kemi, Finland, the sleeper to Helsinki...so it was neat to see 1 leg of this, albeit in reverse. Curious as to how you journeyed from the airport into Narvik proper...
On some days you don't even have to get a bus to Kemi, the VR night train also makes a stop in Tornio :-) Although in 2019 there was literally nothing at the station there besides the platform and a signboard! Now that rail services have been reinstaed up to Haparanda there's hopefully been at least a shelter or something added!
where are you from Dylan ? interesting video indeed, very thought provoking ..
Very nice video!!! I also took this train in December, but doing the opposite route Stockholm - Kiruna! In my case I was travelling on a budget so I got a shared cabin. Also made a video about it :D would be too much of a coincidence if we travelled the same week hahaha
Thanks!
The switch behind the cabin door is to turn on the lights when fully opened, as the door back pushes the top of the switch?!
I remember when I took this train in the mid 90s. Back then it had a seperate carriage for luggage, a real restaurant carriage and a cinema carriage that had a big screen at the end. It was an amazing ride. Sad to see that all of these services are gone, but it still looks really comfortable.
Get him to 100k
Great video! It reminds me of travelling in winter by train from Montreal to Toronto and from Montreal to New York. The room seemed nice although a bit dark?
I hope you will do the trip in summer one day.
I love travelling on the trains in the winter overseas (since we don't really get a true snow winter in NZ) and The Oceane from Montreal to Halifax is very high up on my bucketlist!
7:33 that's the IORE locomotive, one of the most powerful locos on the entire planet, and a regular on this line.
Wow didn’t even know you can take a sleeper train to the Arctic Circle. As it’s such a cold place on earth. And with spectacular scenery.
You can also take a sleeper train from WInnipeg to Churchill on Hudson Bay in Canada - two days each way to watch a few polar bears
Ive taken the train from Helsinki to Rovaneimi in the arctic circle is amazing
So true.
@@Traveltheme706 The VR night trains are the best IMHO!
