The "$500 dollar broom" bit is a little misleading. The broom shown being made in the video is 25,300 JPY (around $165 USD). The $500 broom is basically the same thing with a fancy decorated lacquered handle and some coating on the bristles. $165 is still an awful lot for a broom, but not quite as insane as $500.
Lacquered objects in Japan are generally that price. $300 to $500 yen depending on the product. They are considered sacred symbols, usually used in Traditionalist culture or religion.
I bought a handmade $50 hand brush US made from all natural parts 30 years ago. It’s worn down but still being used. I bought it at a crafts fair in California. Yeah, I could have bought a $5 plastic brush at Home Depot but I would have cluttered the landfill dump with 29 of them by now.
$165 is the cost of it as someone pointed out. Still quite a lot, I do appreciate the workmanship that goes into it. Love the dark bamboo handle and it takes you back hundreds of yrs most defiantly as the technic has not changed one bit, maybe modernized with the use of copper wire. I am also sure this will last quite a long time as well! If so its a winner in my books and worth what they are charging for it. There are very few things in the world today thats hand crafted.
A win, Win situation: 1.Quality: The broom’s design has evolved on many years to be an effective tool. The user benefits from the quality of the tool. 2. Preservation: Buying the broom supports traditional Japanese craft. Hand crafted funtional items make the world a little better. John In Bethel, Missouri Historic trades artisan
Spirituality - the 500 USD broom is that cost because of the incredibly expensive (labour intensive to create) lacquer it is painted with, while the normal super fancy brooms they have just cost 165 USD or so.
There isn't lol. Only wealthy people will buy such things because they have no sense of money. And Japan loves to sell expensive stuffs for the heck of it.
Not me :D and can not think who would like to pay 500 for pushing dust/rirt on the floor... can not be too many sold per year... exept if can fly with it :D
@@villijs33321 Well, then you keep buying cheap brooms that wear out in a year, sweep horribly and end up as plastic garbage in a landfill. You can drink wine out of an old yogurt container or a crystal wine goblet. You can have a cheap polyurethane carpet or a Persian rug.....Some people just want wholesome, sustainable and beautiful items that last a long time.

The Shuro Houki sounds truly remarkable! The dedication and skill of the artisans at Broom Craft in Wakayama are evident in every detail, from the careful selection of palm fibers to the traditional crafting techniques. It’s amazing to see how much thought and precision goes into creating something as seemingly simple as a broom. The fact that it’s both functional and beautifully made is impressive-its ability to capture fine dust, avoid static, and work well on both tatami mats and wooden floors really sets it apart. And the longevity of the broom, with the added versatility of being used outdoors later, makes it feel like a true investment in quality and tradition. It’s a perfect blend of practicality and craftsmanship!
500 is worth it just to not be supporting mass manufacturing consumerism. Broom has some soul to it. If the price is crazy to you, its probably because you are over paying for the basics while being underpaid. The buying power of entry and middle level job wages in the 50s was 4x what it is now.
It's like saying BUY AMERICAN. If you had to buy a set of kitchen stainless ware, that $23 you pay at Big Lots would be $189 at Bill's Buy American Store where the union worker making it is earning $125,000 a year in wage and benefit vs Chinese who work for a whole lot less so we can afford to import it. You will get your wish when that MORON TRUMP puts a 24% tariff on Chinese goods because the genius thinks the consumer will pay it or China will absorb it from the profit.

I thought it was overpriced at $500, then I remembered my $800 fishing rod, and my wife’s $3000 handbag, then the $250,000 shit art. The point is, you pay quality, and whatever makes you happy.

Here is the only broom the next 30 generations of my family will need.
The dedication to making something, even if it is just a broom is really amazing.
It is expensive, but it is very nicely designed, an incredible handcraft. I would love to have one.
It is a true work of art!
The amount of dedication put into something as simple as a broom is quite admirable, to say the least…
Impressive but rather dumb when a $15 broom can do the same job.
