Surprised it uses a Shimano cassette and chain, that would be the first budget cuts on most bikes, and it makes such a huge difference to shift performance.
I actually applaud them in being honest about using an open mold frame. There are a lot of smaller bike companies that use open mold frames but they try to pretend that they are unique to them. There is nothing wrong with an open mold frame as long as the quality control is there and the frame is properly finished.
I worked for Hyper and did the developed and spec on this bike. Just FYI. It's actually not an open mold frame...We tested 3 open mold frames first and decided to create this frame and to open a mold for it. I do believe it is made in a factory where higher end carbon frames are made.
Wish I could afford it ! I'm a partially disabled man from a rare spinal cord issue. But I have been riding all my 62 years and will continue ! Good channel !
@@KevCentral I hope to buy one when I can afford it. I had a Specialized Roll elite which had one but unfortunately someone stole the bike last summer.
Never thought I would say that a Walmart trail bike is out of my price range 😂 recently got a Specialized Rockhopper Comp 27.5, (SR Suntour XCM30, Sram Level brakes, Microshift Advent 9 speed, clutched, for $715!) can't wait to ride it!
I just picked up a Canyon Stoic 2 (29er) during their trail sale. $799 gets a SR Suntour xcr 34 air boost fork, Shimano brakes, Deore drivetrain, and Alex tubeless ready rims wrapped in Schwalbe Magic Mary/Hans dampf rubber. I’ve only ridden it about 100’ and in snow, but I can feel it’s so much better than my project Axum dp.
Beautiful bike, nice components. But for $1700, I still have to stand on my opinion of it being overpriced. I'd be happy to pay a little over $1,000 for it with it configured as is. It needs better tires and a better brake system. That's about it that I can spot from the first viewing.
Thats a good looking and well spec ride., but not surprised at the price point. Why am not surprised about the price., they can go lower and still make a profit! Nice work like usual love what you do!
Dropper post may get caught on water bottle mounts on seattube? **Total respect for the thru axle setup! This bike will last the test of time and trails.
Hmm 🤔. Nice looking I know I sound like a broken record but out of my price range. And if I could there are several others I would look at to compare. Carbon fiber is not a big deal for me. I'm ok with aluminum.
Wow! Especially nice that when the time comes anything you may need to replace or want to upgrade the possibilities are unlimited. I'm kinda used to higher end bikes but, if this was available as a bare frame I'd seriously consider buying one. I recently upgraded my 2015 Trek fuel EX7 to Race Face Turbine R Cinch cranks and XT shifter and derailleur and SLX 11-51 eleven cassette for under $300. Tons of deals out there on name brand new parts, if you're a smart shopper. And the used market is flooded with excellent condition high end parts for 50-80 percent below MSRP. Great channel! I especially like seeing bikes like this getting upgraded without resorting to potentially sketchy Chinesium parts. Often times you can find a quality brand name part for just a few dollars more.
Ive been riding mtb 33 years. My main bike has 10 speed Deore. Absolutely bulletproof. Best value by far of any groupset. The couple extra bucks over Advent or Microshift are worth it.
Since you're checking out direct sales, please consider the Canyon Grand Canyon 5, I think for $499. Deore 1x12 drivetrain and I can't remember if the head tube is 1 1/8" or tapered 1.5" I think comparing it to the $398 Ozark Trail 29er would be a great starting point for beginner MTB riders.
Im struggling to understand how the Carbon X appears to share this frame with a QR 135mm. If this were 142mm thru axle I could see it being the same frame. Hyper does not respond to my inquiries on the rear drop outs, so hoping a comparison video is coming 😁
Price is beginning to get near really good quality trail bikes like the ones you can get from norco or polygon bikes with way better geometry and often better components as well. If you trundle around town, go with cheap and easy to maintain. If you go on actual trails, get a norco or similar. I suspect KevCentral might not have tried a bike with modern day trail geometry.
More current broader capability geo of 44 offset fork and 66* headtube angle with some mention of seat tube angle would be my choice. 1700 dollars is money and you want it done right. Hyper could look at the new Canyon Stoic for a frame to copy.
It might seem like a good deal but with a lot of brands having big sales right now a little bit more can get you an amazing bike. YT has Capricorns for $2,500 to your door right now. That's about a thousand bucks off.
Question. The internal port that's used as shifter cable for carbon x29 v1, you stated it's for dropper post. Where does the cable comes out at the other end? Going through BB area then coming up to the seat tube? Meanwhile it's amazing this MOD29 is around 28lbs. The deore M5100 is not very light. I weighted the groupset w/crank, it weights more than my current setup, which is sunrace M9. And the bike is at 29lbs. However the M5100 is very smooth, and easy to tune, something microshift can't compete. Looking forward to the shootout with your X29...
Hey fyi, Hyper made an XJ version of this bike (doesn't even appear on their website) with a full SRAM SX 12 speed groupset, Lever T brakes with Judy silver fork. I picked one up for $700 tax-in up here in Canada which I thought was too good to pass on. The wheels suck tho
I'm always surprised on boost frames when the max tire size doesn't increase along with the rear hub width? I have a Giant carbon frame that is also 148mm rear but can only accept a 29x2.5" tire. Why bother with boost spacing and not make the frame accept 29+ tires? At any rate... do you have a sense of how large a tire will this frame accept? My favorite 29x3.0 tire is the CST BFT. It'd be great if one of those could squeeze in there... but I doubt it would. Any thoughts? Thanks for another great video!!
So many really good bikes on sale right now. At that price it just doesn’t stand out to me. You can get a Specialized Status with fox 36 and Float X for a few hundred more.
Hey man I know this is of topic but I got a question. so I want to replace the bb on my schwinn Axum still want to keep the factory crank arms what do you recommend?
I bet it was different than this one did it have qr or thru axle hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes and the fork on the Walmart v1 is a coil fork Not the same as this one
Personally I'd take 11 speed shimano over anything. With original cassette it shifts well and reliability is next to nothing. Overall very good bike with nothing need to be changed immediately. Which is rare. Only downside is the price. A year ago it would have been excellent. but now with all the manufacturers having problems selling older bikes and offering huge discounts it is not. Just adequate.
Not a fan of the wide bars on an XC bike. Maybe for open spaces. But, at least where I ride, they have blockades that keep motor vehicles off of the trails. I have trouble getting my 720mm bars squeezed through some of them.
Looks decent enough, but $1700 is a hard sell from a brand people will immediately associate with Walmart bikes. It's an even harder sell when you can get a carbon Polygon Syncline right now for as little as $1000 for their 1x11 Deore spec and those are 120mm travel. Their middle C3 model that is currently on sale for $1299 is the sweet spot with the 1x12 Deore spec and Rock Shox Recon. Their top end SLX 12 speed/Fox Rhythm is just $200 more. Polygon may not have the most name recognition, but they are made along side Marin bikes, so they're good.

Right on par with the carbon xtc from giant at 2200. Add shimano brakes and tubeless wheelset and maxxix tubeless ready tires and its speed the same. This maybe just a tad overpriced but darn close.
At that price I'd be more inclined to choose the Polygon Syncline c2. It's a couple hundred cheaper but comes with similar specs, similar carbon frame, better brakes and better looks. What do you think Kev?
Looks like a decent bike for the price. I think I would spend just a bit more for the canyon exceed. I would trust their frame and crash replacement warranty over Hyper.
This is impressive at $1699 price. It is spec'd very close to my Marin Team One which was $1579. Carbon frame for an extra $120. Crazy!!!! Will need to keep an eye on long term reviews and frame durability.
How come these bikes don’t come maxis tires. Why the smooth tires on every bike at that price. Actually you buy a specialized bike at that price you at least get maxxis
A lot of people use low end mtn bikes as urban transportation. Those tires are a perfect compromise. You serious folks will get what you need easily enough.
Love the vids Kev but I feel you're going a bit soft on this bike - $1700 is alot of money and you can get alot of bike for that price and I just don't see this as being good value. Better than the usual big box stuff which requires a ton of upgrades just to make it trail worthy? Absolutely! For that Hyper have to be commended. I can't help but feel there is a marketing stunt at play here with the bike being made of carbon fiber its main selling point which to beginners sounds amazing and super cool but mightn't necessarily be the best option for a bike that's probably going to get crashed a lot and isn't even that comparatively lightweight. My main criticism is that even for XC that geo is very outdated and with trails becoming ever more technical and steep could add up to some OTB mishaps. Component choice is a big step up but is let down by the tires and brakes - $1700 has you competing with modern geo alloy bikes with full 12speed groupsets with tires that don't immediately need to be replaced. If a friend came to you and said they have $1700 to spend on their first "real" MTB maybe to develop skills on or race would you recommend this over what the major brands have available? Anyways perhaps I'm just a snob. Love the channel! All the best
Thanks for being here. I don’t think the geo is outdated for XC. I checked this morning and there are plenty of bikes - bike shop brands included - that have 69 degrees for their xC models. Would I recommend it to friends? I don’t make recommendations - even to people I know. I tell them what I would consider, but I still let them make the choice 😁
Very disappointed in head tube angle for the price the Carbon X is a much better buy for most. I wondered why the lady on pink bike was having issues selling her promo models but now I know the reason.
Although not quite related to the video for the average person (riding average trails/nothing extreme) are QRs sufficient for most riding or are thru axles needed?
Dear American Youth, This is a proper mountain bike. You'll not find a better quality for a lower price. Regards Nice work Kev. You didn't give up, and finally found a decent build spec for a decent price. First one you've reviewed, I would actually own.
$1700 might be well out of my price range, but honestly the component selection looks great. This poor thing would be lost on me with the abuse I give my bikes, lol.
@@KevCentral Cool. Walmart was having a special for $589 CAD for their latest version. Looks to be the same frame but much better parts, calling it the "Hyper Sinister XJ " now. Thinking of converting it to a mid drive.
I'm not that fussed about carbon so much as specs for price, and at that price I dunno. The Polygon Syncline C2 is extremely comparable as a carbon xc bike and comes in at similar weight, but with a 120mm fork and a 67 degree headangle, it's also on sale but even when it's not it's cheaper by $100
That's an incredibly strong bike at the price. I will say that $1700 and not on a Rockshox Recon at least is kind of surprising, but at least that fork is pretty decent.
@@KevCentral here's what ChatGpt says: "The average head tube angle of a modern cross country (XC) mountain bike made in the past 2 years varies depending on the specific model and manufacturer. However, as a general trend in the industry, cross country mountain bikes have been getting slacker in recent years to provide greater stability and control at higher speeds. That being said, the average head tube angle for a modern cross country mountain bike made in the past 2 years is likely to be around 68 to 69 degrees. However, there are some models with head tube angles as steep as 70 degrees or as slack as 67 degrees, so it's important to check the specifications of the specific bike you're interested in." So, I guess you are right, my bad. Maybe I was thinking of down-country bikes.
Seems fine too me. Ive been riding bikes in the 70s forever and never had the supposed problems I keep hearing about. My bike with a flip chip is in the steep position. I mostly ride tight singletrack. Slack head angles suck for that.

Although not quite related to the video for the average person (riding average trails/nothing extreme) are QRs sufficient for most riding or are thru axles needed?
QR have worked well for 20 years. They still work well. My daily trail riders all have QR
@@KevCentral thanks!
QRs are fine. Never had a problem with any Ive ever used.
QRs are sufficient but yeah for black trails I've had QRs open multiple times...
Dear American Youth,
This is a proper mountain bike. You'll not find a better quality for a lower price.
Regards
Nice work Kev. You didn't give up, and finally found a decent build spec for a decent price. First one you've reviewed, I would actually own.
It’s now on sale for 998.00
The Hyper Mod29XC $1,699.99 price tag is a deal breaker.
I would rather get the polygon syncline C3 where it has almost the same features, but for less money
“11 speed drive terrain” would have been a no go for me the moment I saw it 😅
For the price, curious to know how it would stack up to Polygon’s $1700 range carbon XC bike.
$1700 might be well out of my price range, but honestly the component selection looks great. This poor thing would be lost on me with the abuse I give my bikes, lol.
How's the seating position? Is it more upright or aggressive?
Middle of the road
@@KevCentral Cool. Walmart was having a special for $589 CAD for their latest version. Looks to be the same frame but much better parts, calling it the "Hyper Sinister XJ " now.
Thinking of converting it to a mid drive.
U can buy scott scale 940 for the price
Looks to me like the Scale 940 is $2300
@@KevCentral prices went up but now coming down contender bike has some
Do they all have the same frame?
Sized frames
That the manufacturer doesn’t bother to spell “hydraulic brake” on the box correctly shows how much attention to detail they have 😂😂😂
That's a gorgeous bike
idk, i like it but my reynolds steel hartail weighs less. it sits right at 25 lbs. im thinking that wheelset is heavy
A steel mtb at 25 lb? Amazing, my aluminum hard tail weighs 35.
My full Aluminium 27,5 inch Scott Aspect is 14,5 kg, around 33 lbs. This bike has bigger wheels (heavier) than mine but is still almost 2 kg lighter
I'm not that fussed about carbon so much as specs for price, and at that price I dunno. The Polygon Syncline C2 is extremely comparable as a carbon xc bike and comes in at similar weight, but with a 120mm fork and a 67 degree headangle, it's also on sale but even when it's not it's cheaper by $100
Aren’t those leftover 2021 model year bikes?
@@KevCentral I'm not sure, but I think they're still producing them for 2023
I ask, because scrolling down in the listing it shows the date for all the Syncline models as 2021
Carbon wheelset?
That would save weight for sure
Sold
isn't a snafu something that goes wrong?
When something going wrong is normal - yep 😂
I'd throw a set of Continentals on there and put Deore brakes front n rear from jg bike.
Wow.
That's an incredibly strong bike at the price. I will say that $1700 and not on a Rockshox Recon at least is kind of surprising, but at least that fork is pretty decent.
That geo is archaic, even for XC.
Lots of bike shop brand xc bikes still use 69 for xc
Wow $1700...looks nice...id probably just get a trek roscoe tho its not carbon lol
69° headset angle seems steep for a modern MTB, even if it is considered XC.
I see lots of bike shop brands XC bikes still using 69
@@KevCentral examples?
Trek Marlin, a few Diamondback bikes, and I found a couple of other brands with 69-hta, but I’m not at my computer to see where all I looked
@@KevCentral here's what ChatGpt says:
"The average head tube angle of a modern cross country (XC) mountain bike made in the past 2 years varies depending on the specific model and manufacturer. However, as a general trend in the industry, cross country mountain bikes have been getting slacker in recent years to provide greater stability and control at higher speeds.
That being said, the average head tube angle for a modern cross country mountain bike made in the past 2 years is likely to be around 68 to 69 degrees. However, there are some models with head tube angles as steep as 70 degrees or as slack as 67 degrees, so it's important to check the specifications of the specific bike you're interested in."
So, I guess you are right, my bad. Maybe I was thinking of down-country bikes.
Seems fine too me. Ive been riding bikes in the 70s forever and never had the supposed problems I keep hearing about. My bike with a flip chip is in the steep position. I mostly ride tight singletrack. Slack head angles suck for that.
At $1700, you could really find some badass hardtails with higher specs than this.
If someone is searching for a carbon frame bike the options become limited
