Born in Toronto, grew up in my home town of Winnipeg. What can you say about Neil Young, rock, beginnings of grunge, pop, country…you name it. He’s done it all. Absolute icon!
This song grew on me more & more till I think it’s my fave now too. It didn’t have that immediate impact on me of couple of his other pieces, but it plays the long game- no burnout, it just gets better like fine wine.
love Neil Young.. sings with his heart it's beautifull... try two other live of him, Old man and Heart of gold... there is very nice version of him, younger, singing alone on a chair with his guitar.. perfect moment... him and he band Rush are probably the two best musical gilf that Canada shared to the world
If you do listen to the studio version, check out the official video. It does actually make a cute little story out of the song, with Neil and his wife calling into a local bar to dance, only to meet their younger selves out on an early date. Another great song on a more serious theme is The Needle and the Damage Done, about someone he knew who'd died from heroin use/overdose. The way Neil tells the story, so simply as always, really breaks your heart. I believe there's a live version from this same show as Harvest Moon. A few years before that, he did a fantastic concert Live at the BBC (in London) - it's all great, but you might like to check out one of his all time most popular songs from it, Heart of Gold. He'd only just written/ recorded it here, and has some quietly amusing banter with the crowd as he fumbles around in the various pockets of his old jacket for the right harmonica. "This one's in G, if any of you want to blow along..."... and so on...
From this same "Unplugged'' concert, "Pocahontas.'' The early 70's "Heart of Gold'' and "The Needle and the Damage Done'' are two live performances you should check out. His catalog comprises some six decades, and there are so many to choose, beginning with Buffalo Springfield and running through Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and a stellar career as a solo artist and with a backing band.
Neil Young is a great singer songwriter. I suggest a live performance, just Neil, guitar and harmonica, singing Heart of Gold (probably his biggest hit). The performance I'm talking about is earlier than this performance. Neil can command a stage by himself
Thanks, Ace.. the "sweeping/broom" is just for show here.. the actual sound is from the drummer (brushes on high-hats).. still a great song.. and one of my favorites.. there is a nice video ... appreciate your reaction...
I've never seen a romantic movie. This song, a couple of other from Neil Young, and some April Wine tunes are as romantic I get when it comes to art, and it seems to be sufficient enough for the ladies.
I don't know if you've ever heard of k d lang(she doesn't capitalize hot own name)period but you need to listen to the k d lang version of Hallelujah that She did at the Canadian Olympics.
Neil runs the gamut. Country, Garage rock, Heavy rock, Folk, Political, "Grunge?" ( I guess, though us older folks wouldn't know him for it because the word grunge didn't exist back then)..Really can't label him. Neil is Neil...Wanna hear something beautiful? Listen to his song "Philadelphia" at the end of movie of the same name, in the context of the story. It will tear your heart apart..I suggest you watch the whole movie. Great film!
If you had done the studio version you may have never picked up the broom being incorporated as an instrument. Neal Young is a legend in rock music 🎶 since the 60's you'll also catch him playing with Crosby ,Stills & Nash. He's bigger than you know❤️🎵🎤🔥🎸🧹🧹🧹🧹
If you watch the official video, you'll see it's at a country bar & there's a guy they feature who's outside sweeping the sidewalk. I don't think the sound is actually sweeping, it's more like a drum brush.
Without actually checking, I rather doubt this Neal Young masterpiece did much on the country charts. Young defies categorization. Some of his stuff is folk some is rock and or blues. Country Rock is a thing but wasn't accepted by the county music establishment.
"Harvest" was his first big album. Acoustic album. "Harvest Moon" album was like a sequel. So the next logical step to listen to Harvest, Heart of Gold, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done.
Always puts me in a gentle frame of mind. Simple, elegant

This is Neil Young. He makes every style his own. The word ‘legend’ applies to him. This song makes everyone smile.
My favorite Neil Young song.

A Legend. A man of the land. Folk/Rock. The Grandfather of Grunge.

Dropping off another suggestion if interested. "Neil Young - Old Man (Live)" ✌️
That guitar strum seems to derive from the Everly Brothers' "Walk Right Back" in the 1960's.
You would probably enjoy his 1971 live at BBC version of Old Man
Neil Young, & his instruments,
No production, perhaps the best musical perforance of his career

The sweeping comes from this music video. This is totally not country. This is a classic

Live is 1000% better. 👍👍

Try, "Old and in the Way" not sure if it's jerry Garcia or not. The whole album will take you on a trip. Peqce out! Jeanie
why do bruthas have such an incredibly hard time finding the right words???
Not country
