Clearing brush and saplings along the ATV loop trail, Insley gets my attention by barking frantically down at Otter Pond. We're having a remarkable pattern of heavy rains most days, finally a return to lush conditions after years of drought. I discover a year's-long problem with a troublesome mower, and learn that Insley finds bog invaders, directs my attention to the trouble, then passes the torch to me and toddles off to find more interlopers.
LIFE ON THE BOG chronicles life lived closely within the natural world of northern Minnesota, its seasonal shifts, observing the wildlife passing through and the rhythms advancing: grouse drumming, peepers screeching, trumpeter swans trumpeting, grosbeaks fluting. This journey is at times absurd, reflective, humorous, slapstick, thoughtful, silly, contemplative, and laughable, but never profane.
