I’m an infant teacher and I’m also cpr certified. Honestly I’m terrified of this happening to one of my babies so I like to refresh my memory by watching these videos
I am an Early Childhood Educator, I tell ya, it will freak you out when it does happen, but always stay calm. I never had to do it on an infant, but did have to do on toddlers, a few times, and once on my own son. Toddlers, you really have to watch out because they wont grab their throats or necks, they will just go into a strange panic mode and not do anything, except stare in a panic, maybe start shaking, or just take off from the area they are choking in. They put everything in their mouth. But, they will most likely choke on food because when they are really hungry or eating a food they really like, they will eat it fast and forget to chew things. Preschoolers are similar, but they panic and you can tell they are choking. Never turn your back on a young child or leave the room when they are eating, because it happens in a blink of an eye. School age kids, just like toddlers, they will eat things fast and swallow large chunks of food (hotdogs are the worst), but they will grab their throats and go into an obvious panic mode. When the time comes, it will freak you out and get the hearth pumping. Just stay up to date on your first aid and cpr training and above all, stay calm and you will do just fine.
Just finished performing on my 2yo, she was choking on her chewable vitamins, so I rushed to watch and go over what I did right and wrong. Thankfully after doing it 4 times she was able to breathe. This is very helpful and we should stay up to date, you never know when you will need it!!!!
6 months after i gave birth i took a 2 hour class on infant first aid. Hopefully i won't ever have to use it but i thought it was necessary... i highly recommend taking classes like that or watching videos like this one if you have a child, i've learned a lot.
CoolTops My 7 month old started choking on a Cheerio she found on the ground. I found this video and comment quickly. Don’t know for certain but there’s a possibility this comment saved her.
@@scott8908 This is why you take a baby first aid course _before_ the baby is born. This isn't to chide you, but to signal boost this to other parents so they don't end up in your situation. Remind any expectant parents you know that they absolutely need to do this. I wish hospitals and birthing centers added it to their syllabus of required coursework before giving birth.
I just had my son choking today. I'm so glad I knew what to do. If I didn't I'm pretty sure he would of went on. Parents, aunts family should know what to do..
I have an almost 3 year old and 9 month old and I’m an infant teacher. This is one of my fears and it makes me want to cry thinking about this happening to one of them. But I also am glad they have videos I can watch to keep refreshing. I also got a life vac as back up and always have it wherever my children are and one in my car at all times.
My grandson choked on something when he was with mom. She called out to me and I quickly stuck my finger down his throat without even thinking about it and he coughed it right out (he's 1). Even though I helped him cough it out, I knew that was sort of the wrong way of going about things. That's why I'm looking up all of these videos now.
Thank you for posting this. Honestly, we should all be required every 5 years to go through this as well as CPR in the United States- all of our adults. This could save a child's life.
Call emergency services right away! Use voice activation on your smart phone so you can begin treatment immediately. Don't wait until the baby goes unconscious!
not while they are choking, it's not cpr, it's compressions to make the object pop out, you can't do it quickly if you have to lay them down and then pull them back up and position them...
this is some super valuable information. They should require this in senior year of high school. I got CPR lessons in middle school because some neighborhood lady paid for us neighborhood kids to take it and for some reason all I remembered was this one but completely forgot the chest pushing part.
...Also keep in mind, when you're in the midst of an emergency, you panic BIG TIME and deliver 100 lightening-fast slaps to the kids' back out of fear. It's definitely a scary situation, so it's good to have this information in your head! 😱
Like all emergency procedures, practice them regularly in calm situations so that you can execute them cleanly and correctly with reduced panic in a real situation. The key to reducing panic is practice which creates confidence.
Never had to do this IRL (phew), but in training we were taught to kneel, that way you can support your arm on your leg (also feels a bit safer to know the baby isn't far off the ground while you keep flipping them back and forth)
I think your video on baby cpr is the best. In the other videos I saw, they held the baby down in their lap and not on their forearm--which I see now the slight vertical angle of your forearm makes a bigger difference and gravity is key. So kudos to you!
This brought me back, was eating chinese take out with my family at the dinner table, piece of teriyaki got stuck in my throat luckily my dads a firefighter lifted me up by my feet and shook that mf out. Worked like a dream (keep in mind I was around 6-8 so my body wasn’t as weak as a babies so this didn’t give me brain damage lol)
0-12 months. If the baby is too large to hold by one arm, you place across your thighs. For visuals of this, see "First Aid for choking in babies and children" and "CPR for babies (age 0-12 months) taught by paediatric nurse and founder of CPR Kids Sarah Hunstead" on the "CPR Kids TV" UA-cam channel.
The Good Samaritan Act discharges from liability any member of the general public who attempts basic, emergency care in good faith. Remember, if the person is unconscious and not breathing, they are dying. It's not a matter of if brain damage could occur, but how much is happening. Bad cpr is better than no cpr
You do have to get consent from parent/guardian for a child, just like you have to get consent from an adult who is chocking. If the person is unable to reply or unconscious, then it is considered implied consent.
Indeed, maxdecphoenix. No CPR 'license' is required to perform CPR. Even if you've only seen it on youtube, you can attempt it. No harm's worse than dying. More generally: If the situation is non-life threatening, you need parental permission to provide first aid (say, putting on a bandaid on a minor cut). If the same child is about to die due to choking, you may want to ask permission in order to not agitate the parent and reduce scene safety for yourself, but it is not a legal issue. In other words: You're fine, legally, to perform these procedures ASAP without permission. Inability to respond equals implied consent as long as you act in good faith. If the parents get angry, re-evaluate scene safety and either continue saving the life, or retreat if your own safety is now your primary concern.
Flex Jet yes many times you may break a rib but you need to get them breathing before you worry about anything else!!!!! Would you rather have a broken rib or a dead child ??!!! I’ll let you choose but I’m getting my baby to breath no matter what has to be done!!!!
A baby joking on liquid can cough it out themselves. Always let then cough if they are able to. It's when they are not coughing or breathing that this is used for.
Baby can choke on liquid and saliva my baby has done this at 2 months old. They are too little to get it out themselves especially if they have spitup and haven’t learned to cough effectively yet. The procedure is the same as the video even if it’s liquid. The back thrusts saved me from having to call ambulance 👍
"always let them cough if they are able to". "Its when they are not coughing or breathing that this is used for". I've been doing childcare for 20 years and many parents freak out when their kid is having a cough attack. If your baby is not able to breath or is unconscious then yes, Definitely apply these methods. But do not do chest compressions/ CPR if they are already coughing and conscious.
Kelzi Montpetit yes I agree if they can cough that’s great, my baby couldn’t breathe air in or out or cough she was just silent but was definitely choking so that’s when I did the back thrusts. Luckily it worked!
Yeah, this video is older. They teach it now as "back blow, check" 5 times, then "chest thrust, check" 5 times. That "check" is a slight pause to react to a changing situation, hopefully the airway clearing. Usually they won't puke, they just expel the obstruction.
It's stupid to call 911 only after the person has already gone unconscious when the ambulance could take 30 minutes or more to arrive. You should get someone to call 911 immediately as soon as you notice someone is choking and all the while you should be trying to help the person with the choking problem that he/she has! That is the right procedure to follow!
Why breaking her spine that is so violent just hold your choking baby and jump gently several time and then you already give him a twice the strength of that voilent hit to the poor baby ... We are in 2023 and still have stone age medicine..... Just keep with other human hospital to know new treatment and solution for health improvement and medicine ..... Plz be kind to your babies

The video is 3 minutes long how did you get time to watch it and and also do it 4 times?
Everyone should learn how to do this, you never know when or if you'll need to do this. It's the best feeling to help save a life. Peace.

Probably lots

When I was an infant I started choking on a bottle cap in a restaurant. Luckily there was a doctor.

I think it would be hard as a stranger to help someone's baby because they might blame you if something goes wrong even if you just trying to help
Came to my mind too
Or you could just let the baby die by doing nothing?
I'd take the risk I think.
That's why we have Good Samaritan laws.

Frightening but really important to know!
The difficult part is switching the baby from one arm to the other. The baby has weigh and might slip off your arm during the changing of side.
Thank you very much. Expecting our first child in 3 days. I hope to never have to do this.

Don’t first try to do do back blows 5 times then 5 times massaging the chest the call 991
Your arms wont sag when your doing those compressions IF YOU SIT DOWN because that IS what you should do when doing compressions on a baby

Can you rest your arm (that’s holding baby face down) on your leg if the baby is heavy and you have weak hand/arm strength?
So, I do not swing the child and use centripetal force to get the item out?

I panic a lot I have twins and it's scary.
Panic is normal, the fact you’re here watching this is more than what most parents would do 💜
Shouldn’t we make sure that the baby’s mouth be open fully so the object can come out ?
Are the chest thrusts the same as infant compressions? Or are we mainly focusing on the sternum versus the upper right quadrant

Being liable to taking action. Do you get parental permission FIRST before performing any first aid/CPR/procedure?
I don't think so, once you're cpr license or if it's emergency you can do it.

What if the baby is choking on vomit? Like she has vomit coming from the mouth and out of nose not breathing, would this technique still help?
I’d say so. I’m not 100% sure though so it might work if you give them the back blow technique.
