I am learning gtr, 7 months. The 1st thing I worked on was not having my thumb on the fretboard. Seemed like the correct way to me. Is there a correct thumb placement? This dude plays great.
Well it purely depends on on what style of music you are playing, if you are playing slower more blues orientated music that is slower and has more emotion then the thumb over the top will be fine as it allows you to really dig into the notes and put emotion into them but if your learning to shred then you’d be better having you thumb placed on the back of the neck in the middle as this allows your fingers to be able to perform faster notes!! Thank you for your compliment and if you want any more advice or need help understanding some of what I mean then just reply to me in the comments and I’ll be happy to help!!!
Your thumb will mute out the E and possibly A string.
As for correct or not I have been playing guitars since 13 and now 56. Moved permanantly to bass 10 years ago and still coke that neck and kill the E string and A string ring.
Like anything else in life learn the basics and then throw proper techniques out the window. And like he said its all about the genre.

@@DexterBriggsMetal No problem man. But... I am a Prefessional and not professional, right? Music should be fun and if money follows then good. If you can make a couple of hundred dollars doing gigs on tge weekends that is fun. Spending days in a studio trying to get everything perfect over and over and over again??? Not so fun.
So get this song perfected then keep playing it and find some folks that wanna' play with you and cover songs but add some of your own in and if people like them enough then you may would have gotten noticed a long time ago. As a musician composing music you have a long row to hoe to get noticed. Singers just go on a one in a million talent show on broadcast TV to get noticed.

@@DexterBriggsMetal, With all of the Motley Crue drama, Mick is finally being recognized as the legend that he is, and the backbone of MC.
Yeah it’s such a shame about his back and how the other guys in Motley Crue didn’t fully appreciate his contribution to their success!! If it wasn’t for Mick I don’t think The Crue would have been as big as they were!!
