As an American married to a Russian, over the first year of marriage, I learned pretty much all of these little "hints" (all this, while living in America) you mention in the video. Based on our social interactions of Russian/Ukrainian/Moldovan expatriates living in the United States, I can verify these tips 13 tips you provide is true. After 14 years of living in the USA as a married couple, we are currently in the process of moving to Russia to spend time with my wife's relatives, so I am somewhat prepared for living there. I am sure there is plenty more that I will learn and experience along the way.
I've been visiting Russian off and on for the last 8 years as I married a lovely Russian lady. I don't speak Russian (my wife speaks English fluently), but in all my time in Russian I can honestly say I only met ONE person (a taxi driver) who was rude to me. However, the thousands of other Russians I met treated me like an honored guest and I was made to feel very welcome. Russia is a beautiful country with wonderful people and great food. Russians have a GREAT sense of humor and if you make a joke about a topic like American politics, they will laugh. If you are asked about Putin, you can honestly and respectfully say, "I'm American, Russian politics is not my business." Russians will respect this answer. But, do not get sucked into any serious conversations with a drunk Russian.... they will talk until they pass out, regardless the subject. Russians love to ask a million nosey questions, "are you married?", "Where do you work?", etc.... don't let it bother you, it's just very few Russians have met Americans/foreigners, and their curiosity gets the best of them. I always have some wiseguy answers at the ready, "How old are you?" "Old enough". "Why are you in Russia?", "We ran out of vodka in America". If a Russian overhears you speaking English in a restaurant or in a public place, they WILL NOT bother you and ask, "Are you an American...??". Russians will respect your privacy (which in some countries doesn't happen).
I had a Russian family move in next door and I found them to be very helpful and interesting. They moved away several years ago but we've have become the best of friends. Visiting Moscow is definitely on my bucket list.
Beaten up doing this, beaten up doing that. Where is that supposed to be a risk? I've been several times to Russia and never felt unsafe. Just act like a decent person, be polite and you're treated very polite and respectfully back.
This is probably meant for Americans, and even Americans know most Americans don't really consider things like this when traveling and come off as disrespectful

I`ve been going to Russia for the last 20 years now. I can tell you that unless you decide to go there , you can never know the truth. Media and most of other countries always do their best to make Russia look bad as they are afraid .of it since it is the biggest country in the world , 2.5 times bigger than Europe. I saw it transforming during this last years and I can tell you , I feellsafer there than in Europe or Usa. They have there own world there. Mostly all brands/ companies which exist in the world are manufactured there. Also they do not even need them as they have there own brands. So basically they need no one. Ultra modern Mega stores that you need 2/3 days to go through them all.Best and the nicest metro underground in the world . People are mostly friendly .you do not see beggers any more. Most of young people speak english . Winter , especially in christmas time/decorations etc. Is Magical. My advise , Do not compare Russia from 20 years ago with Now. You`ll be amazed to discover that it turned out to be one of the best countries in the World. Also No one gives a shit if your gay or not. !
@@Bshaef "I agree, Russia is a great country to be from." What a stupid thing to say. Nobody can decide what country to be from. It is a coincidence of birth which you have no control over. What is more important that you can move to a country and if you decide that is your home you are from there. In Scotland it is that way. In Russia, too I suppose, at least I've been accepted there but I try to fit in with the culture.
A few years ago I was wandering about lost in Moscow pulling my wheelie suitcase behind me. At night. In winter. I spoke to several passers-by saying 'excuse me'...or 'do you speak English?...or hello? And passers-by they remained. I was getting pretty desperate when a young couple stopped and tried to speak to me (no English). The guy then walked out into the road and stopped the first car that came along. Spoke to the driver (in Russian of course) then gestured me to get in the car. What??? Yes, yes, yes, pozhaluysta. Got in the car - and the driver took off. This way, that way, through here, down there until eventually he stopped outside an apartment block. The one I had been trying to find. I was a bit stunned and mumbled about giving some roubles to the (until then) silent driver. He waved his arm (pah!!) and pointed up at the block. I got out of the car and - whoosh, his Lada disappeared into the darkness. The young couple had obviously seen an innocent abroad and thought it best to do something pronto. Because....well, who knows? Some people later thought I had a lucky escape. But I just felt warmth and respect towards those Russians.
I've been helped by good people in Ireland. Me and a friend we were stranded in Northern Ireland at night because we didn't notice that the train does not run all the way through to Dublin in the Irish Republic on Sunday nights. So we ended up on the deserted streets 2am in the morning in Northern Ireland and went into a taxi dispatch to ask people if they knew a youth hostel or somewhere else to stay. Did that and one of the guys gets up and says there's nowhere for you to go tonight, you can't be outside so you're staying with me. The guy put us up in his house for the night telling us if we had stayed outside over night, there would have been a good chance of us getting killed. There are always people who could care less if you drop dead before them on the streets in any country, but there are also people who care. Perhaps the next time you see someone having trouble in your country as a tourist, you can help as well.
Listen, russian are ordinary people like you We like flowers, gifts and we can understand that another countries cold be better than Russia We aren't north monsters
Борода Мерлина I'm from the U.S. and I've been there. I love Russian people...because they're well educated, have wonderful culture in writing, music and art, and because they have respect for their ancestors, the motherland, and a depth in their soul that is lacking in my native land. So much so that I married one. Plus, the land is breathtakingly beautiful, too.
One of the best places I've ever been - friendly, cheerful people who love to drink, play music and party. And culture like nowhere else. We seriously underestimate Russia and Russians.
Our leader is friendly enough, he just MUST respond in that maner for those who do not care about our interests. And that "those" very upset for that. Regular people are not burdened by such complex problems, so most of us can be friendly with everyone, while they follows rule №13 :)
@Krishna Patel Please shut up, there's no such thing as "laugh too much" there are 140 million of them, don't characterise them as 1 personality. Thanks, and posting comments like this isn't making you any cool so abstain from such childish comments.
These are not strict, your rules. You can smile, you can say soccer and you can refuse drink and you are not gonna be beaten. It will just mean you are not Russian.
True, smiling is OK, just don't smile at strangers of the same sex. I am Russian and I say 'SOCCER' because I speak American English. No big deal. Drinking strong alcohol is not a must, by all means. However, I must admit that I get frowned upon for not taking heavy alcohol. :)
Absolute truth. "Beaten up" here, "beaten up" there... About gays though. No, many people here don't like them, cause it's against our vision of human nature, but I always respect any people as long as they let other people live the way they want to i. e. as long as gay don't impose their way of life etc. on others. No propaganda, in short. Here, in Russia. Not somewhere far away, from where it is so much easier to "love" this country or hate it. Also, our backwardnesses are mostly due to the grievous state our government (oligarchs included) put us in. Our ancestors have lived in Soviet Union for decades, some people are still living in it)), cause what's happening with our lives, our economics, our culture now, is even worse than all these things were before. What do you expect us to be? A bunch of former communists seized the power over the country, robbed our people, took from us what must be considered a commonwealth. The problem with Russia is that it is too rich in resources, some want to seize them, others want to prevent it. If you know what I mean.

12: saying country x is better then Russia. Isn't it just a inappropriate thing to say in general? You never do that as a guest, in any country, period. You don't come to yours friends home, and say your home is better, even if it is 100% true.
The never refuse a drink part is complete BS unless you are in a company of some lowlives. As long as you are with normal individuals you should feel free to abstain from drinking for any reason or without one.
I’am from Russia and not everything is true. Because he said what if you gonna do something wrong you gonna be in trouble!!!! But it’s a cute stupid !!!!!! Russia is huge and all peoples are different, just don’t afraid to discover the new countries and new peoples
I've been to Moscow twice and I LOVE that city! I enjoyed everything about it. Even though I could speak only a few words, it appeared the Muscovites did appreciate my attempt. The old adage even in the US, never talk about politics or religion, it will always create hard feelings or a brawl. The Moscow Metro is fantastic, it's easy to navigate and very efficient to get around the City. One day I was attempting to locate a specific Spire at the Moscow Kremlin, for a tour. I asked a Police Officer if he might speak English, he replied yes, but probably not so well. He spoke very good English and he was very helpful in assisting me to locate the spire. Don't just visit St. Petersburg, also visit Moscow!
Greetings to Russia from Texas!! I used to live in Europe, mostly in Sweden and Germany. Unfortunately, I never made it to Russia. I hope I can visit your country one day. I like to travel and learn about different countries and their cultures. I would like to learn more about your great country.

Good points in general. As a guy I think the best advice for going to any foreign country is to act as a gentleman, and always be respectful to the country and to its people there !!!
Russia's like anywhere else. Except.. The people are great, the women and children are beautiful.. The police are cool. Half of them wear tight skirts and high heels. Although they drive on the right side of the road, driving is an expert experience. If you're not an expert, take a cab or the bus. Don't be shy. They know you're a foreigner and you might not understand everything. Like Alex said, don't be a dick. You're a visitor and a guest in their country. They have to live there everyday, you don't. And chances are their lives are more difficult than yours. A little bit of kindness and understanding goes a long way and is universal.
Wow... about visiting Russia... Listening to this man, makes you never ever want to visit and yet reading through a lot of the comment section, makes you want to go! 👉😬👈 Go figure! That's wild!
I can strongly recommend visiting Russia to "see for yourself". Foreigners are (in general) much safer in Russia, than in the USA, France or Germany. Offending people or acting like an ass-hole will get you into trouble in most countries, and Russia is no exception.
It's not wild, it's common sense. Russians are one of the very few people in Europe who still understand common decency and order, instead of complete moral degradation of the west. I love Russia.
@@MaSsiVeGaming1 True. I'm half Russian and half West European and I think just like in the 30s. Faith, honor, order, family and strength is everything.
I am a Russian living in Germany for the last several years. Neither me, nor any of my Russian friends and colleagues who live in Germany just like me ever start a conversation about politics or Putin with anyone except Russians. However, local and non-local people often come up to me to ask about Putin. Frankly speaking, I never give a direct answer to any political question they ask because I understand that we lived and matured in different environments, have access to different sources of information and our perception of the world may differ dramatically. However, in many cases before me saying a word in reply to a question about Putin, people start praising him, admitting his strengths and expressing support. Well, here you might think I am just another troll. This is very convenient when you want to shut someone whose opinion you do not like. However, I believe many Russians living in Europe can prove my sentences. Notice, it is not me or any of my Russians acquaintances , it is non-russian folk who starts these conversations. Therefore, it is at least inaccurate to say that people should not ask Russians about Putin or they will be beaten. We have plenty of Putin haters in Russia and apparently they do not end up being beaten. I am wondering just why haven't you started your monologue with a sentence like "Hello, I am Alex, I moved to US because I hate Russia where Putin wins every poll despite me and other `thinking` folk standing against him by not coming to polls since we don't recognize them in Russia, and here I am to tell you, why you should not even think of coming to Russia".
Damn, it's always funny to hear such things about the country you live in. To be brief (for many ppl have already corrected the false parts, tho I can't agree with all of those corrections) I'm simply gonna say that many things can get you in trouble, anytime, anywhere, not only in Russia. But there are two things you should always consider: quality of ppl around you (are they intelligent looking or some thugs/drunks/hobos/hooligans, coz intelligent person would not start a fight unless provoked directly, and the other type is a trouble potential in any country) and that not every trouble equals beating/death, more often it is simply an verbal argument. And yes, don't be a dick. Anywhere. :)
Surprise: It' a really rare offer. If you are offered, you can accept OR ask for something non-alcoholic and still drink. It's like a gesture of a company for themself to be united.

I would like to mention that Russian people are polite and not alcoholics as mentioned in Hollywood cinema. If you have prejudices, you should leave them behind before visiting Russia.
B/S I know Russians in Hollywood and they drink like there's no tomorrow, and smoke and cuss, act wild more than other people I've seen, and they're from Moscow!
Russian people, Russian cultural, Russian tradition Russian beautiful cities are really awesome. You can never compare Russia with other European or American countries. Mother Russia is always the great country. You will never know the reality if you just travel you have to live for several year to know Russia. I had this opportunity to live in Russia for 3 years. Sorry but some of these "13 things" are wrong or look like stereotypes. Russia is a large multinational country, and most of rules in the video are not common for each place in Russia (don't try to compare Moscow with most of other Russian cities/towns). Russians are normal people with very different points of view and they will not behave aggressively at every opportunity. By the way, many russian people are really interested about foreign guests and their culture :)
Dear Alex. God bless you brother. These thing are not only to let people know what you shouldnt do, but you are actually shared their culture with us. Wish you be happy always with gods grace.

Holy crap! It's not about Russia and definitely not about cities like Moscow or St-P! You're just scaring people. Almost everything is just an outdated stereotype thet may be topical only in some very remote places.
Yo this guy is just straight up lying to you The only solid point that he made was about the odd/even number of flowers, and that has to with some kind of superstition I guess But everything else is just plain wrong and definitely not the way it works in Moscow or St Pete, which are the most tourist attractive places So, honestly, don’t be afraid, no-one will kill you for shaking hands in a glove, not willing to drink or talking about sports or politics
Nikita Zlotskiy And who says that everyone in Russia are killers? What about if we can hurt them more than they can ? Personally I have never afraid of anyone on any country! You just be yourself always and that’s it! Nobody can do anything, if your aren’t an asshole. Why you want to look fearful ? Fear is not for every guy, fear is about some persons around the world no matter their country. End of story.
It's a pun on a cliche phrase that people used to put in the end of newspaper classifieds - "интим не предлагать". Which means "Do not offer sex services." I guess that's because some people would, no matter what the add was about. Just an off-line version of spam. Like porn pop ups on computers nowadays. And his shirt says "Интим предлагать" - "Do offer sex services". I suppose I don't have to explain the humor? :)
There is one important point missing : 14 ) Give money to the poor. In Russia the poor are really poor, and they live from this money. It is an obligation for Christians to help others and to give money to the poor. If they are in the Metro, they could be just beggars. Those in front of the churches are really poor and they need your help.

I m a Turkish man and I ve been living in Russia for approximately two months. Their customs and traditions are really nice. It is very similar to Turkish Culture. All of these topics are also valid in 🇹🇷 exception is superstitions.
I was wondering the same thing. There are people, here in the USA, who will rob your ass blind if you're not careful and you do NOT have to be a tourist.
a dude with russian accent and probably was born in Russia ,you know. Eloped to usa and says wrong things about Russia. Disrespect and weird way to deride country and people. You haven't succeed at all, Саша. The only right thing from this video is info about superstitions in Russia.
Haha rule #4. I understand this is for Americans. But I would say its mostly American thing that you dont take shoes off. I was warned about this before a trip to USA "never take off your shoes" unless not told you can take. In Sweden and Finland we think sameway as Russia in this shoe thing. People get mad if you not take off indoors.
OK. So, basically almost all of that is true. I lived in Russia my entire life so I know what I'm talking about. The first point is kind of wrong tho. We don't beat gays in Russia. Most of us at least. But we do disrespect them and don't take them seriously.
Even though people could be careless about strangers, true Russian friend is a golden chest. You are stuck on highway with flat tires at 3a.m. you call them, they get up, get new tires and come to help. In America though, phone is turned off after 9p.m. "it is bedtime, nothing personal, just business"
Well he talks a bit about superstitions (which if you really know Russians we got a ton of them) but nobody’s gonna beat you up or dump you over it. Come on!
This was an excellent video. I have always wanted to live in Russia. But now I am older and just living on Social Security. I actually don't understand politics. I have been watching allot of videos on Russia. The country looks like a super place to live.
This is sad and funny at the same time. "Propaganda of gayness among minorities" ... there is a major difference between minors and minorities, you know? And yes, there's a law against adverting homosexuality among children, mostly covering the media (google " Mrazishi " and judge for yourself whether they are kid-friendly). getting beaten up for having said something bad against Putin... or losing friendships of _intelligent_ people if you say you support him. That's just so biased and made-up... people will want to discuss politics with you, and it might get heated, but nobody is going to hurt you for your political opinions. A gf will dump you if you give her an even # of flowers... If you call football "soccer" - the fans will beat you up. This is Russia from some parallel reality ... True on the money exchange and phone calls - like in most countries... Doesn't hurt to be street-smart. Same goes for not being an asshole. That's pretty much a universal rule. have no more than 2-3 drinks and then say you're driving. Perfect sense :) America is better because we have IPhones... That's a great justification of why America is better. What will indeed annoy people is saying America is the best because it is the greatest country in the world. Because it's so great. It is safe to say it is better if you give a good justification (something more solid than Iphones). People may argue with you but they will not beat you up lol.
Cathy K youmcracked me up in some parts of your reply. I so agree with you. He sure sounds like he’s living in some crazy insane totalitarian regime hell-hole. Forget that. Yes it’s true you should be nice and considerate as well as avoiding dangerous situations. But cooooome on! It’s a bit freaky to think that it’s really like that in Russia. Maybe North Korea. But definitely not my motherland.
The advices he is giving are mostly true, but only in industrial shit holes. If your friends make you drink against your will, maybe you should find better company! That goes for any country. The handshakes and the no gaynes in public that's fact. Also dont forget eye contact when shaking hands and put some attitude in the handshake.
No, no, no.... This man is either... or stupid. Possibly demonstrates prejudice. Some remarks are in part justified by Russian culture (does everything need to be the same like in between these with whom he lives around?). But in general all this is very silly. And, just to explain you better why I know: I am Polish, I lived in Russia for 5 years, and also I lived for around 20 years in several "western" countries. No! All, exactly all that is silly.
Uummm...when have we killed gays for being gay recently? HAVE YOU SEEN OUR PRIDE PARADES??!? Yeah...with a few exceptions, nothing on this list is typical American behavior. You DEFINITELY need to stereotype better lol
Very bad luck if you get a train in Moscow,,everyone bumps into you and no apologies,,dont cross the road in Moscow ,I got hit at a zebra crossing by a woman ,and she could,nt work out why I was so angry,,As individuals Russians are very warm and giving people ,but when you walk around anywhere they dont seem to care for each other,,Sad

My Russian teacher (from Russia) explained me a main difference between Americans and Russians. An American will constantly brag about his country being the best in the world, but he will accept criticism. sutanpuu: nop! Not in India
sutanpuu you haven’t been to New York then
A few years ago I was wandering about lost in Moscow pulling my wheelie suitcase behind me. At night.

What do you expect us to be? A bunch of former communists seized the power over the country, robbed our people, took from us what must be considered a commonwealth. The problem with Russia is that it is too rich in resources, some want to seize them, others want to prevent it. If you know what I mean.

I can strongly recommend visiting Russia to "see for yourself". Foreigners are (in general) much safer in Russia, than in the USA, France or Germany. Offending people or acting like an ass-hole will get you into trouble in most countries, and Russia is no exception.
I am Russian 🇷🇺 and the video is 100% true.

@@catholicracialist776 where in Russia are you from, because either you've been abroad your whole life, or you're lying.
My answer to a question about Putin would simply be, "I'm not Russian." In America we say, "walk a mile in my moccasins."

And, just to explain you better why I know: I am Polish, I lived in Russia for 5 years, and also I lived for around 20 years in several "western" countries.
No! All, exactly all that is silly.
Where you get this info mate????
Russia so great .
Rusian people so nice.
Privet from USA.
So basically, don't act like a American...
And not only in Russia.
Word.
Uummm...when have we killed gays for being gay recently? HAVE YOU SEEN OUR PRIDE PARADES??!?
Yeah...with a few exceptions, nothing on this list is typical American behavior. You DEFINITELY need to stereotype better lol
In America never wear the orange shirt with the wire rim glasses and the black fishing cab, you will get beat up.
false info........ Russians not possible at all.......... india loves Russia...........
But Russia does not love India. ;)
I like India, Makhabkharata my favorite book, and I am russian. Actually video is 70% true, and there were no bad information, unless brainwash.

Biraj More No you indians pretend to love just for the sake of bobs and vagenes!
Thankyou... I love Russian people we. Couldn't have gotten to our own space STATION without these awaom people...
Что ты городишь? Половина фактов надуманные.
I love the Russian architecture.
Very useful warnings. Thank u v much.
I'm Russian living in Seattle, WA and this guy is a joke. In general, if you are traveling and you are an American, rule #1 stop watching CNN and you will have the time of your life in Russia and most places in the world)))
6:40 "do not say your country is bigger than theirs" damn.... Who ever says that really did realise, RUSSIA IS THE BIGGEST COUNTRY!
My Russian teacher (from Russia) explained me a main difference between Americans and Russians.
An American will constantly brag about his country being the best in the world, but he will accept criticism.
A Russian will always complain about his own country... but don’t even try to do this as well. (Pretty much like in Southern Italy, btw 😉)
This video is full of gibberish and smeshcheniye=prejudices
Yes into politics. Russia is good, USA is bad. It's very easy to speak about it.
I mean the US isn't great rn but Russia is worse politically
Weak economy low gdp per capita Yeah Your very dumb
Yea thanks for your concern for us who travel to Russia.
