Hi Morgan. About Viking pricing:- We've done 4 Viking ocean cruises in the last 18 months, and I can assure you we would not have done those if we were paying $3,000 per trip. Viking likes to maintain a high-end image (eg they don't sell spare capacity via travel trade-only agents), but after you've cruised with them once, they send offers by email which do not appear on their website or in print, in addition to a £100 discount pp for returning customers. Don't forget Viking fly-cruises include flights; if you don't live in the UK you will be directed to the US web site where prices include flights from the USA. (We live in Northern Ireland(UK) but are often in the South. We get two completely different sets of prices from Viking depending on our IP location). You can always phone Viking UK directly and ask for a cruise only price. As it happens, we will be doing our first ever Rhine River cruise with Viking next week. We are paying about £1,000 pp for 7 nights INCLUDING air fares from our home town via Heathrow. Viking include drinks with meals and a shore excursion in every port. (The ocean cruises are all balcony cabins and include use of the spa plus alternative dining venues). You can make the cruise all-inclusive with a very reasonably priced drinks package, but that's a different story. PS. Don't fret about the grey hair. It's very mature and distinguished.
I loved the ausgang story - it’s such a typical tourist thing and made me laugh. It’s moments like that that make the holiday. You never think it will, at the time, but years later that’s the story that’s most often repeated. In my family it’s the ‘getting locked in the toilet in Italy’, ‘running over the camera and almost burning down the tent’ in Switzerland, ‘throwing up in the hotel’ in France. Oh and let’s not forget the life lessons with the ‘saw a woman pee behind a bush as we sailed on overhead in a chair lift’ also located in Switzerland and ‘shells can be homes for blue-ringed octopus, so don’t stick shells into your bathing trunks’ at a local Aussie beach. They’re the stories that stick.
Psychgirl, NCL is a great cruise line. I've been on 7 different lines, now I'm loyal to NCL. There is a cruise line for everyones taste. Smooth sailing. Peace.
Come to Germany and you can visit thousands and thousands of small towns as well as big cities all called "Ausfahrt", all located near an Autobahn. And when you are thru with them, hop over to the Netherlands, with hundreds and hundreds of small towns and big cities all called "uit", all located near a snelweg. Good old Europe.
I love your channel because you give a little extra with all your videos! I booked a Viking cruise in 2020 for 2023 and I feel I am go to get a lot for all the money. My fare includes airfare, transfers, 2 nights in a nice hotel pre- and post-cruise, wonderful food, wine, detailed lectures about each port stop, and more. I am an American of a certain age and I feel that I will be well taken care of with Viking.
Thanks Morgan for sharing your Viva Tiara cruise experience. Looking forward to other videos while on her. Really made me want to consider a cruise on this line. As I was watching another of your recent videos my husband was also listening. He commented, "that guy is really good". I smiled and said yes, I like him very much also. So, looks like we are part of the Morgan's UnOfficial Travel Guides fan club. 😀 Thanks for being so real with your travels! BTW....your hair looks so good!
I travelled with with Amadeus river cruises in December 2019. As there was a large group of us from Australia all announcements were in both German & English. All of our excursions, apart from one, were broken up into English and German speaking groups. The one excursion that was bilingual had just 1 german speaking guest with us, there were 20 English speaking, and we had everything explained in both languages.
The ship looks just like those used by Tauck which are Scylla. They are nice ships and run well. Viva is so much less expensive but the service, food and amenities seem similar, though a much shorter trip.Great find!
You are right. VIVA cruises uses ships owned by Scylla. And by the way: so does Tauck. Both VIVA and Tauck do not own ships, both are only tour operators, not shipping companies.
Commercial - McCormick seasoning. Enjoying your experience on MS Viva Tiera. I think it sounds like an affordable way to cruise compared to the "big names" like Viking. Love that they had bikes to borrow.
After 20 years of living in Italy (plus other countries in 25 years) I feel ya on the "it's a....um...you know.....where you push the button and water comes out.....a water thingie!!" LOL Great video on the river cruise -- might I suggest you take an amazing, life-changing river "cruise" on the Nour El Nil going down the Nile in a dahabiya.....
I just discovered your channel (thank you algorithm!) and am very much enjoying your Viva vlogs. Looking forward to checking out your older videos too. BTW: I think our Wisconsin friends would call that water dispenser a bubbler.
Refill stations are what we call the place to refill your water bottle. I’m impressed that you had access to COLD water (still or sparkling) as well as the branded water bottle included in the cruise. What a great idea! It’s nice to see companies getting smart about things like that for their customers and to reduce waste from single-use plastic water bottles. PS my commercial was for Schlitterbahn Water Park and Resort here in Texas. 🤗 Have a great week! Hope it starts to cool down for y’all. We’ve had record-breaking temps almost all summer. 😩
French canadian here, french is my first language and when travelling in France I never met so many rudes persons. A little exception for south of France
Agree! I found that in 1972 when I went to France as month-long foreign exchange student (the family I stayed with lived in Dijon and a summer home in Valbonne outside of Cannes. South of France was definitely friendlier. When I tried to speak French in their household, their university student daughter exclaimed "Speak English! You're ruining our language!!!"
Ausgang yup happen to me as well and when I asked the guide he was laughing so hard and finally blurted out the meaning. Yeah made an impression and still laughing whenever I hear that word. Thanks for the chuckle.
It's interesting how cultures are so different. We have lived in France (moved from the US) 10 years ago and have wonderful French friends. Our French is basic and their English is basic, but that's okay. In the French culture and in school, children are drilled constantly on how to correctly speak their language. I think this is why many French don't speak English, as they are afraid to look stupid by not speaking it well. Most learn basic English in elementary school, so they usually know what you are saying, but don't necessarily know the correct response. In places where we have to speak French fluently, we normally start with an apology, saying our French is rudimentary and stumble on from there. We have normally found French people to be quite gracious because we acknowledged our shortcomings right off the bat. Not all cultures are the same, but that's what makes travel so much fun.
I’m thinking river cruises might not be ideal for my 6”6’ (and still growing) son, those bridges look super low he would have to sit at all times. But I’m still glad you shared your experience! My son is planning to come to Germany for university and it’s exciting to see the cities and learn more about the country.
My travel agent calls your room a swan and duck rooms. I love that. Drinking water refill stations. I too loved that about my river cruise they refilled glass bottles daily in our room. too. I have a very special diet and my river had the chief meet with me the 1st day and accommodate my special needs. They were amazing. Great suggestions on the excursions. We had a person in my party with a wheelchair and they even made excursions for our small group of 6. We cruised Avalon. I think your price was amazing for any river cruise . Thank you for your information. I got 4 commercials. Wow most ever. All about exercise programs.
Great story from Judy 😂 Also a German speaker, I immediately realized what she was saying. So funny that she kept looking on the map. But I’m sure any of us could have done that in any country where we don’t speak the language. There ARE many exits on those freeways! 🤣
Commercial was for a patch you put over your bellybutton when you sleep to lose weight!!! Seriously- I laughed so hard. Like I am gonna fall for that … now where did I write down that web address. HAHAHA I wondered about doing a river cruise but we only hear about Viking ( over and over) and the cost. I will definitely look into Viva - it really looks nice. Thanks for the video 😀
The caché for Viking is that it sponsored the Downton Abbey series on PBS. It took off like a rocket in popularity. You pay for the brand. Our travel agent said they cater primarily to older Americans who have never been abroad and they nickel and dime you for everything.
Loved your thorough post! I had never hear of Viva until your review so THANK YOU! I will say that Viking does include a shore excursion each day for free and usually there cruises are 7 nights versus 4 nights; however yes the big 3 (Viking, AMAWaterways, and Uniworld) are not cheap! They do have single supplement waived on a few select cruises which really helps. Cheers!

The food looked really fantastic and I am sure the non veggie options were just as good but I am also definately curious about Vikings price difference... P.S. We also used to save our Disney resort mugs but eventually ended up throwing them out as we found that we never use them. 🙁
I love Germany and would love to travel the country on a river cruise! My question would be if you don't speak German, do a good number of passengers speak German and English? Or would my travel companion and I be stuck conversing only with the bilingual crew members?

Always Uniworld, AMA, Scenic and even Avalon looks like it might be good. Our food on Viking river was almost inedible . My friend summed it up best mid cruise when we were walking into dinner and she said “I wonder what we aren’t going to eat tonight “. They ran out of diet soda on the third day and friends on other Viking river cruises said they had the same experience with poor food and running out of things. Lots of advertising but if they are going to talk the talk they need to walk the walk!
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides anytime! Oh, and what Viking is calling their Long ships, they are no longer than any of the other river boats, because of having to go thru the many locks that they do. Enjoying your videos. Vickie
This sounds like a wonderful River Cruise line -- water dispenser sounds like the best "American" equivalent. Do they cruise outside of Europe or is a just inside Germany? I would definitely consider a River cruise if the ride is more stable than a cruise ship (hate the rocking feeling). Also, it's wonderful to be seeing "civilization" as you seem to see the "real" countryside, and not just a touristy port where the locals try to rip you off with cheap trinkets to sell you for top dollar (Euros). 🙂
Ama is great But EXTREMELY expensive. Ama will make announcements in all languages that are on board. I did one River Cruise and one was enough, TOO expensive. Like you said, what goes through their minds to justify their high price, that is easy...As long as people are willing to pay the price, they will keep gouging people. As for me, I am sticking with my 2 favorite cruise lines...Celebrity and Oceania. Just booked a Cruise leaving out of Barcelona sailing to multiple ports in France and Italy. Just did a Cruise around the Greek isles...I have done all of the Caribbean, Alaska, Canada New England, Panama Canal, Bermuda, The entire UK with the CIE land tour, I lived in Hawaii so no need to go there. I want to do Norway and Suez Canal.
I have a feeling the water is going to be as varied as. Pop soda cola debate. I would call it a water fountain or dispenser. Commercial was. Hot tub close out, metal roof system & apple.
Wow! That price is amazingly inexpensive for what you got, compared to Viking for example. Your reports show that everything is very good value, no skimping, especially the meals, and the facilities in the cabin. I understand a smattering of German, so that would not be too much of a problem. Do Viva do a cruise to/from Basel?
If you check out the Viva cruises website, you can see all their offerings. www.viva-cruises.com. (There is a button on the top left to switch the language to English)
I LOVE FRANCE! I speak conversational French and read French, and I've found always incredibly service! Except in Honfleur. Apparently the waitress/host/owner couldn't understand me, but I was the unit one in my NCL group speaking French. Maybe there's a northern French dialect?
It's always funny bc you sing "did you get one....?" And I never do. I pay for UA-cam premium bc I was already doing YT Music, do it was just a couple bucks more, and includes the YT Music sub.....
This cruise sounds great. How much do you know about river cruise in the United States. I know of America Cruise lines and Viking. Is there other lines? Small ones like this one you went on but in the United States?
In the US Viking River Cruises is the only known name for European river cruising because they spend tons of money on advertising; which none of the other European river cruise companies do.
Yes I got one!! It was Children's Tylenol. Love your videos!!!! I have a question, we are going on this same river cruise in October. HOw is the weather?
In October, it could be cold, but it might be warm. You might have a lot of rain, but it could also be sunny. It definitely won't be hot, but it might not snow. There, does that help? :-P
So, if I understand what you said, the two English speaking folks had no translation on the excursions because there were not enough English speaking folks booked to warrant a translator. Did they have those little boxes and earpieces with recorded content in English for the tours or were tours in German only as well. Thanks.
My ad was for Priceline :) Question: does Viva have a short season or would they travel for the Christmas markets like AMA does? Love this series. I really want to travel on Viva now
Thanks for the Viva videos! 👍 In my head is now playing Dana International from ESC 1998 all the time, but with the words Viva Tiara 😂. Just because of your "Ms Viva Tiara" 😀
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides I did. During your break, there was a 30+ minute version of the same ad ! Skipped it too. I usually only watch 6 or 15 second ads unless it really grabs my attention
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides Google says: "water spender" would be ok as well. Just don't say "spender" without "water". That could lead to "spe... spender" (you know what I mean) 🤣
Very entertaining video and I can see that you really enjoyed this river cruise and it sounds wonderful. The water refill device we generally refer to as a water dispenser in the US, but, you can call it pretty much whatever you like. The food choices looked excellent and I also don't eat meat, although I will have fish. The Viking comparison for river cruises is interesting since we have done both river and ocean cruises with Viking and I think that they are worth the extra money for the food, service and included excursions. Also, all wine and beer is included with lunch and dinner and their drinks package is the cheapest, only $20 a day per person. Having said that, though, I thought that what you got for the pricing on Viva was really a very good deal. The ausgang story was very funny, it's so easy to do something like that when you don't speak the language. I will use my phone for translation all the time when we travel and it does help.

My first river cruise went all the way to Budapest, so yes, they leave Germany :-P
we call them water bottle fillers, but it's only still water. That was in your cabin? I'm multitasking 😁
Two commercials: One for Meta Oil, and the other for Kachava.
Thanks Morgan, please have a cold beverage on me as thanks for all you do for us.
John! Wow! What a great surprise to wake up to! Thank you very much.
Oohhh I appreciate the vegetarian menu!
Maybe you can share some information about post-cruise excursion
Especially I find strange that no reviews on Priceline excursion department
But does the water taste as fresh as water with crystal energy
Haha. No, no energy in this water at all. I should have brought my crystals with!
I have a feeling the water is going to be as varied as. Pop soda cola debate.
I would call it a water fountain or dispenser.
Commercial was. Hot tub close out, metal roof system & apple.
Just as long as the "kettle mafia" doesn't show up, I'm fine! lol
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides Thank you.
Water refill station.
I have enjoyed this series so far. Does Viva do longer cruises?
They sure do! You can check out the options on their website www.viva-cruises.de and then select EN at the top of the screen.
The water bottle fillers have been gaining popularity here in NJ in the schools.
Water bottle filling station!
I LOVE FRANCE!
I speak conversational French and read French, and I've found always incredibly service!
Except in Honfleur. Apparently the waitress/host/owner couldn't understand me, but I was the unit one in my NCL group speaking French. Maybe there's a northern French dialect?
Fabulous to see South African wines on the menu...( i am from SA)... How did it compare ?
Also saw that (also from SA). Planning a boat cruise next year
It's always funny bc you sing "did you get one....?" And I never do. I pay for UA-cam premium bc I was already doing YT Music, do it was just a couple bucks more, and includes the YT Music sub.....
Morgan, I’d call it a ‘water dispenser’.
YES! I don't know why I couldn't think of that while I was standing there!
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides Lol, we all have those ‘brain freeze’ moments.
This cruise sounds great. How much do you know about river cruise in the United States. I know of America Cruise lines and Viking. Is there other lines? Small ones like this one you went on but in the United States?
The American river cruise companies that I've seen have all been so ridiculously expensive that I just stopped considering ever cruising with one!
Got 2
Ad for Captians and one for Macy's
Think it’s cause Viking is known for being around much longer.
Haha
So, if I understand what you said, the two English speaking folks had no translation on the excursions because there were not enough English speaking folks booked to warrant a translator. Did they have those little boxes and earpieces with recorded content in English for the tours or were tours in German only as well. Thanks.
My ad was for Priceline :)
Question: does Viva have a short season or would they travel for the Christmas markets like AMA does? Love this series. I really want to travel on Viva now
Viva has cruises for most of the year. You can check out the options on their website www.viva-cruises.de and then select EN at the top of the screen.
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides thank you for opening our eyes to this option!!
Thanks for the Viva videos! 👍
In my head is now playing Dana International from ESC 1998 all the time, but with the words Viva Tiara 😂. Just because of your "Ms Viva Tiara" 😀
Check the prices of UNited States river cruises, they are around $1,000 per day.
Which is just way, way too much!
UA-cam wanted to show a 42 MINUTE ad before you !
SKIP IT!
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides I did. During your break, there was a 30+ minute version of the same ad ! Skipped it too. I usually only watch 6 or 15 second ads unless it really grabs my attention
Really interesting video! Does Viva only cruise in Germany?
Nope! Check out their website for all their destinations. www.viva-cruises.de
Did you have to tip the person who helped you with the luggage who gave you a mini room tour?
The water machine is a "Piss-Meister 5000".
COMMERCIAL was for Norwegian's Free at Sea!
Well, how would you call a machine that dispenses water? Maybe a water dispenser?
Ja, aber mir fiel nur "Spender" ein und ich wollte nicht "Water spender" sagen!
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides Google says: "water spender" would be ok as well. Just don't say "spender" without "water". That could lead to "spe... spender" (you know what I mean) 🤣
Cold water dispenser
