I got this at a factory outlet sale shortly after it was discontinued. Even though I was about ten I thought it was inferior to the other Star Trek toys. It didn't look much like Vaal and the figures that came with it were just generic aliens that weren't even in the same scale. But I HAD to have it anyway because it said Star Trek on the box. (It helped that it was heavily marked down).

    • @andrewtaylor940

This one always felt a bit off. It was more an amalgam of a few Star Trek episodes. What was the episode where a Kirk falls down a trap door, gets amnesia and joins a local tribe? The trapdoor bit always reminded me of that. I’m more amazed Mego didn’t reuse the molds? I mean Mego reused everything.

@@andrewtaylor940 That episode is called "The Paradise Syndrome". I also immediately thought of that episode when I saw the trap door in the commercial in this video. It makes for a neat feature in a toy, but the episode itself wasn't very good. (In my opinion it is worse than "Spock's Brain" because it is just kind of boring.)

@@BrickMantooth Paradise Syndrome did not age well.
There's a scene that's interesting because it shows Kirk using the TERRIBLE system medics tried to use for resuscitation before CPR was widely adopted. If the episode had been shot just three or four years later he probably would have used CPR.
In the episode's defense... I saw a fan music video where they distilled the whole episode to eight minutes, entirely without dialog. And you could STILL follow the story. I doubt you could say that about most Star Trek episodes from later series, which would be mostly shots of people having conversations in different parts of the ship.

@@BrickMantooth Funny enough, that voice might have served better as Spock's. As you noted, the central aspect of the playset resembles "Vaal", but does anybody else think the dais with its ascending steps looks a bit like the Preservers' asteroid defector from "The Paradise Syndrome" (aka "can we save money for an episode by using Native American props, set pieces and costumes?"). Also, the glove puppet "monster" reminds me of "Gertrude" the articulated alien "plant" from "The Man Trap".

I had a childhood friend that outdid me on all toys. He had the second wave of Aliens that I never heard of. But he never had the Mission to Gamma VI. However, at Adventure Land, our local amusement park, had a game room where you won tickets to exchange for cheap prizes. One of the prizes was Mission to Gamma VI. It took my friend and his family about 2 or 3 years to win enough tickets to get the playset. I think it was now 1980 or 1981 and neither of us were playing with Megos by then.

When I get home, I’m sure my hedgehog (Quillemina) will love your channel too. Thanks so much for all the much-needed smiles and entertainment.

It's a shame I never saw this playset in stores. We did get the Enterprise playset and most of the action figures. I still have my Kirk, Spock, and McCoy from way back then and have since bought all of the other Star Trek figures, except for the Romulan. I also have the console and the Super Phaser II Target Game. They both still work, but the sound on the target set works only occasionally. Usually the lights on these toys work fine, but not the sound. The same with Them Bones and the Buck Rogers Laserscope Fighter.
Someone mentioned the Other Worlds figures by Arco. I have three of them, and they do look like they'd fit in with the Mission to Gamma VI playset.

As a collector and someone who never saw this playset as a kid, I honestly cant see the appeal of it, it just doesnt seem in scale with the 8 inch figs, but as U mentioned at the end rather 3 3/4 ones. I know its retooling , but maybe they should of done something similiar batman cave/ POTA village and added some gimmick on etc. as that being the planet lair or something.

to each their own, I know as a kid, this would have been amazing to play with. My only "alien planet" for my trek figures was our sectional sofa in the "conversation pit".

Is it me or is this playset better suited fot the 3 3/4" figures (Star Trek - The Motion Picture) instead of the 8" figures (Star Trek - The Original Series)?

I had that playset, until my brother took a baseball bat to it.
I always figured that the 70s oil embargo was the death of 8" figures and the birth of 3 3/4" figures.
