    Excellent tutorial for the young geeks. Having worked in IT for nearly 30yrs I can agree 100% with all of the advice given, particularly "get the money" and "watch the overheads" - these are crucial.

    Great Info Eli! I just graduated with an associate in IT and was thinking about building a PC repair business from the ground up. I like having the option because you can get fired from a company and still be able to make some income from fixing computers. This video definitely puts things in perspective! I definitely enjoy your videos bro! Keep them coming.

    Yeah, newer OS's have less problems. But there are more newbie users out there now then there was 10 years ago. You wouldn't believe how many people bring their "slow" PC to me, and I find they have 2 (sometimes 3) antivirus programs installed. hehe, thanks for the vid Eli, you rock.

    1/3 So many things can go wrong. Glad to see you mentioning contract or workorder with specifications and protection clauses, like "not responsible for data, client should have a backup".
    However, I think we can have client specify if he has a backup or not, and specify what the options are. 1. OK to wipe and reload, 2.call him for authorization to wipe and reload 3. perform data backup and restore it after wipe and reload (for additional charge and I didn’t see you consider this option).

    I started out when I was your age as well. Good luck on your future endeavers. Some tips: I'd say find an 8GB or more flash drive, set up multiboot using GRUB or Yumi. and put things like Hiren's bootcd and Parted Magic on. Also D7 is a good tool to have around but doesn't have to be booted. Put some good AV and diagnostics utilities on as well.

    Very helpful and true.Visiting customers at home even has more advantages: Customers LOVE quick fixes.Not every granny can come to your shop and put all those cords back together rightly. Often the problem is not the PC, but the router, the printer or the monitor. So if the customer does not know that, he will bring you a working PC to your shop for repair. I don't see things as bad as you do. Put your focus on the customers DATA. Yes, they can buy a cheap new PC, but who brings their data back?

    Good Video. We have owned a storefront computer repair business for 10 years. Much the advice on this video, we already have in place, but it reinforced our practices. Also picked a few ideas. The pricing discussed is exactly on, if you are running a storefront shop. There is a value to the customers in working with a shop that charges enough to still be in business next time they need us. Thanks...Poulsbo PC & Electronics, Poulsbo WA

    Great video man! Here is a story, I had a customer who dropped of their computer repair. Gave him a drop off receipt, called him and told him how much the repair would cost.. He came back 1 year later, and was looking for your computer :) I told him i still had it and i was willing to give it back if he paid 90.00 for the repair.. He stated he never told me to repair it, and that i was stiffing him.. (shaking my head) .. I had to explain it to him in other forms that he abandoned the computer ..And that we were nice enough to still have it, so he had to pay 90.00 to take it out.. Long story short, his wife picked it up.. Dealing with people is an ART..
    Great video man! I like the part you said, that you fix computers in the projects! People love us technicians! Good luck buddy in your business.
    What is your take on HP DV2000, Dv9000.. We do not deal with them due to the recall in 2002 ; Motherboard design problems.. There are times where we would purchase motherboards online and months later the motherboard will have a GPU issue. Which is not our fault but HP design issue..
    I remember when HP merged with Compaq and the CEO of Hp got let go.. The merge was a disaster! Two companies with a bad reputation.

    Another good idea I've seen a guy here in the UK do, is buy a small van and work out of the van. So the van is the office. That way you don't have to work in the persons house and don't have to come back later. Battery backups being your power. What I really hate is going to a house, even if decent, yet they have a really crap and uncomfortable setup (which I've had before). I ended up telling them I'd just take the PC away a fix it, was easier.

    would have liked to hear some marketing tips in this video, I was looking forward to it throughout the whole thing (thought he was leaving it for last), but it never came...however that aside, great video I very much liked it. You're confident and moderately genuine, what many of us lack.

    • @weekendpartier
      @weekendpartier 10 років тому +1

      Really? The whole video is a marketing seminar! It's an hour and a half long! You need marketing advice? Get a book on marketing. Marketing is getting your name, brand, logo out there to your target audience.
      Who's your target audience? What's your logo look like? Does it convey professionalism? What do you look like when you meet prospects? Are you wearing torn jeans, or are you dressed professionally? And, if I have to explain what dressing professionally means, then you're not a professional.
      And, I'm an ex-sales pro who worked at Dialogic in NJ which was once owned by Intel. I have my own business now.
      You know what the real problem: everyone wants their information spoon fed - no one wants to go out and do the research themselves. Bottom line: the entire IT industry has gone to China.

  • @MrHunkalicious

    Very informative video --- thanks!
    I agree with your final thesis --- computer repair is a dying business. 99% people are happy buying $250 PC's at Walmart so there's no incentive to spend money to fix problems outside of maybe $20 on removing spyware or such. I used to do PC repair for about 3 years but the market is just not there anymore!

  • @Ferrari0321

    Good video. I think some of us though it's more about doing something we love and not about the money. I'm always saying "I want to be successful, not rich". I think theres more wealth in success than in zeros. Though I do agree with you in the fact computers are easily replaceable... but there is still a good market of business men willing to pay to save their computer with it's configurations / expensive software. Teenagers are married to their laptop and parents pay good to keep them happy.

    We've been in business since the early 2000's (2001) and haven't seen a decline in the amount of malware removal revenue, if anything we've seen a large increase since the release of the crime kits and the infections that follow with them. (Fake AVs, TDL-1,2,3 & 4 and Alureon)

  • @elithecomputerguy

    Having completed thousands of work orders I can say that never happened in my shop. Being that the crime rate in Baltimore is foolishly high it seems unlikely to be much of a problem that you will run into. But when in doubt call the police... Then you can blame them for how it turns out...

    Firstoff, I love the fact that your vids are long and cover all aspects of everything you do. 2ndly I love ebay lol. ive learned that you can use ebay for some things. only buy from people who have many picture a good detailed description and a good amount of seller feedback. I buy lots of parts from ebay but only genuine oem parts from the us only. no knock offs. Ebay buying takes a little more recon but its well worth it in the long run if your careful and efficient.

    You can make good money buy earning your clients trust and making references. Need to know latest equipment and standard equipment for Home & offices. At least 5 years of hands on experience work and advertise your service properly. Think about trying to reach 1 million people in a 50 mile radius of your business to let them know about your services. This increases the chances of you getting on call work. You dont need a repair shop to do this.

    Yes I'm working in the high tech industries for years and companies are not paying technicians nothing. Technicians should be making at least 25 an HR for entry level. Techs at higher levels should be making 35 an up. After all their are people working for GMC making 35 on the production line. Electronic techs have to take lots of higher math,labs,solder, and know many other things and paying them 15-18 an hour is ridiculous.

  • @itorres008
    @itorres008 11 років тому

    3/3- your time, client doesn’t want a wipe and restore or doesn’t want to pay for parts. So client may expect the PC back and pay nothing because “we didn’t do anything” - which is what he thinks if we didn’t fix it. Maybe he just never comes back. So, maybe one should charge the non-refundable diagnostic fee up front. That’s one option. The other interesting option is the CompUSA model - it’s $129 flat fee plus parts. If you don’t want to pay for additional parts, they still keep the $129.

    He says "Best Buy" like they're some type of legitimate company. They SUCK. I've never had a good experience at Best Buy. There's always some problem. The worst experience I had was trying to buy an HDTV there. I paid $249 for a 20" Toshiba TV. Somebody took the TV out of the box and replaced it with some generic 13" TV that wasn't wide screen or HD. That's all that was in the box. They stuffed the box with newspapers and wrapped it up so it looked like a brand new in-the-box TV. There was no stand. No remote. No cords or accessories. When I took it back they acted like they didn't understand why I was angry. They told me I could buy everything I needed to get it working right there. It took me almost 2 hours to finally get my damn money back. That place is a JOKE.
