As a Celtic fan I would love to think that if every player in our team came out as gay or Bi or any other minority group we would not only ignore it but would actively support everyone through their life and the decision to be thereselves.

I'm a trans woman and I was brought up on football and still watch my team as much as possible. I wouldn't dare walk in a football stadium and even tend to try to not go anywhere near the city centre if it's a match day.
Is that your fear tho? It’s one thing to play dress up, it’s another thing to piss off English men by dressing up as something you’re not. Fact is I wouldn’t be pleased to see you but I wouldn’t harm you in any way..

Just want to clarify I'm not loosing sleep over not being able to enjoy going to a football match, I sort of get it, it's a man's domain, they go there to enjoy themselves, they don't necessarily want people around who put them out of their comfort zone, if it's that much of a problem for some people, I'm willing to honour that, I'm not here to force myself onto people where I'm not welcome, but since they're discussing the topic, I thought I would share how I feel as a transgender person. I'd rather just be able to walk down the street without people shouting things at me, beeping car horns and shouting out the car, calling me a faggot, standing in the street looking at me like I'm the scum of the earth when I'm just going about my life, things like that are definitely worse than loosing my ability to stand in a football stadium and feel safe.
I don't align with your view on what "dressing up as something I'm not" is, as in my view, if I were dressing up as a man, I'd be dressing up as someone I'm not, so my two choices are either, lie to you (in your eyes), or lie to myself. After 20 years of not being myself due to fear of disappointment from others, I can honestly say I'd never go back to what my life was before transitioning, as disappointment in myself for not being myself, for fear of disapproval from others, is a lot worse.
Remember the Very sad story of Justin Fashanu (and his brother Johns reaction to it all at the time, and how Brian Clough treated him so badly too).

No it was great about Justin Fashanu he was found out quicky before he could sexually abuse anyone in the UK. Unfortunately he abused a child in the US and fled back to the UK, then commited suicide before it went to trail. A sick evil monster like Barry Bennell who infitrated the English game, we must have a zero tolerance atitude towards the LGBT.

Absolutely spot on Rylan. Need to stamp out toxic masculinity from sport and society. We also need to do the same with all forms of discrimination and start to educate people about true sporting role models. In football people like Sòcrates, Marta and Lilly Parr. I’m glad now we have new role models like Leah Williamson.

@@Ennis85The word homophobia doesn't refer to a fear of homosexuality (it did originally used to refer to fears of becoming gay) but it refers to feelings of dislike or prejudice of gay or more generally LGBTQ people. Language changes, it's a poor argument too, "the word homophobia doesn't mean fear of gay people therefore I don't have to address what we're actually talking about".

Lots of brilliant points and also sad that these conversations still need to be had. But they do, so they have to be.
Ironically, Rugby doesn't have this issue, and it's arguably a tougher game. Opposing fans sit together, and chants from them isnt bigoted.

Interesting conversation I've had at work with our Pride team is two people discussing why a Gay fella doesn't like the term queer
And a queer guy explaining why they don't like the term Gay. Both said "when I was younger that would be shouted at me as an insult and I can't stomach it now"
Id like to think if a player came out for my team our fans would be 100% but its the very small minority that feel its wrong to be gay and be a footballer
They wouldnt act like it in every day life (or a majority wouldnt) but mob mentality is powerful. So they would shout out slurs.
Its down to other fans and fanbases to sort it out
If a player scored the winner in the 90th minute of the champions league final it would not matter to ANY fan whether they are gay or straight. That needs to be the norm

The way I've always seen it is it's no one's business about sexuality but I understand it's important to people to come out and just feel you can be yourself. I'd hope most teams and players would be very accepting now but it's probably a long road ahead to get there.

I wouldn't have had a single second of time for Rylan previous to this interview tbh. Mostly cos I'm not a talent or reality show watcher and only ever saw snippets, and dismissed him as more drivel (not in a hateful way, just, whatever, I don't care, and he's a bit OTT for me kinda thing. Like Graham Norton or Julian Clary on coke), but this interview had really changed my opinion of him.
At the end of the day, I'd be happy to sit in the pub and have a chat with the fella. I don't give a single fuck what he likes to do in his bedroom, and neither should anyone else.

i've never been to a football game before, but i wouldn't mind going to a women's game for my first game. they're still playing football, and it's a more progressive environment

I can tell you from first hand knowledge that the crowd, while being about the third the size, is exactly the same for both the male and female games lol
I'm actually not massively keen on woman's football, much prefering the men's game. The only positive thing I can say about woman's football is that players don't fall over and roll about in faigned agony at the slightest feather touch (or sometimes no contact at all).
With regard to the sexualitie of a player, I personally could not care less!!! It is after all - as Ryland inferred - their own affair😊

I do think alcohol is a huge determining factor behind how people act towards others. I would hazard a guess that if no alcohol consumed at football games, or that people at pubs didn't feel the need to have one too many, then our culture may begin to change. But too many people in the UK like a drink and ultimately, I think these people will be homophobic or racist. Whether they are like that deep down or not, is another question.
Drink just removes your inhibitions. It’s not the root cause of someone being homophobic, but it will make them more likely to shout a slur if they already have prejudices.
Alcohol has nothing to do with it and it doesn't cause bigotry. Plenty of pubs won't show football or allow people in with football related paraphernalia, as well as the laws regarding consumption of alcohol at football matches and separation of fans. Some pubs will even security on match days.
This doesn't exist with other sports. The issue is the culture around football.
There are issues with British drinking culture, not just when there's football, but alcohol isn't the cause of the problems amongst football fans and bigotry within it.

A great interview guys. One thing we mustn't forget is the fact that football grew from working class roots unlike rugby and cricket. In these other two sports it hasn't been a problem with current players coming out of the closet. It's the combination of working class roots and toxic masculinity which has led to this problem and I don't see an easy solution.
Politicians shouldn't get involved as most of them are no longer respected in society therefore nobody will take any notice of what they say.
You mentioned race as being a subject used by the uneducated. I also find that using words that could upset people of a certain religion are just as toxic.
As a Spurs supporter who is not Jewish I find it abhorrent that certain supporters call themselves "y**s" and show the word emblazoned on their supporters' flag at Tottenham Stadium. There is no place for this in 2024.
Let's step back and see how rugby and cricket have been so successful in eradicating homophobia. We can only hope.
I have some Ashkanazi Jewish roots. Yiddish is / was their language . Hence the shortened word. It depends on context . Tottenham fans use it as a word of endearment. When Chelsea Fan. Lee Munns used it , to mock Tottenham and Jewish people in his sick Tweeted joke about the holocaust then it's usage was abhorrent . And that's why he got nicked.

Rylan is so right. Sexuality and so much more. Football is permeated with a culture of hate. Never go to games anymore, cant be arsed with the heckles and even threats just for looking a little different thru no choice of my own lol. Its like once you step thru the gates anyone is fair game and all you get if you say it upsets you is a load of people, who have never had to deal with that kind of treatment, tell you that its not a big deal. infuriating culture. best enjoyed from the sofa IMO.

I hope someone comes out soon in the prem, or they do an ad against homophobia or something, because it would get such a large of the english public to get onside (punny) or at least THINK about it. Like the fact an ad was nearly published against homophobia but players were afraid to be the face says it all. I'm not saying sexuality should be the forefront of anyone's identity, but it would help SO MANY people if it was more of a thing we could talk about without batting an eye lid!

If the home teams star player so much as miss placed a pass he will get some abuse. Never mind an openly gay player being out on the pitch. I think Justin Fashanu did it in the early 90s and that didn’t end well. I don’t think much has changed in terms of football.

It'd be interesting to see all the teams collaborating to halt play if their fans do shit like this. As in, a team halting play if their own fans start a chant. Like a spartacus thing. Managers can't fire everyone, fans can't boycott the entire game. It'd send a pretty clear signal.

I remember my dad taking me to old trafford when i was younger.. I stopped going when i was about 11 0r 12... I've never been that into football.. But I found the crowds to be full of the worst kind of people.. both men and women...

Why do people change their voice, use an even more common accent, often resort to vulgar language, and become unpleasant and nasty when talking about football? It seems to bring out the worst in people. People seem to lose all their manners, values and princibles, and become indignant bullies. I don't understand football and I don't understand the obsession with it.
I think it's a space for uneducated men to assert themselves. They tend to have traditional ideas about masculinity which rely on regressive stereotypes, such as homophobia and violence.
