Asakura Yohken is the one who actually defeated Hao. He also had a God-class spirit on his side. Matamune just have a final blow. Consider that Matamune had strong relationship with Hao (Hao even said that Matamune was he's one and only friend, so he definitely didn't wanted to kill him)

And when Yoh appeared he started to think that his not alone and does his ability to read hearts was destroyed and then Yoh became the shaman king.
