This class of hypothetical black hole would have appeared shortly after the Big Bang, when the Universe was in a hot and dense state, and would have resulted from the direct collapse of the gas in the densest cores. Some of these grew to become the seeds of supermassive black holes, others remained small, much smaller than stellar black holes.
