  • Today I'm making a DIY truck bed liner using rubber horse stall mats. I'll show how to cut them to shape and tie them together with the woodworking technique of using 'bowties'. And at the end I'll show you the real inspiration for this project.... a truck bed camper mixed with a handyman's utility work shell!
    Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions you might have!

      Thank you! And yes, I think merely for the aspect of them kinda being a good stabile and somewhat cushioned footing they are perfect for a camper base.

    The Tractor supply in my area has them for $55 each...pretty good deal for a very tough bed liner...I'm going to suggest these to my step-dad as he's been wanting a good liner. Thanks!

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  3 місяці тому +2

      Yes, I think they’d make a good liner for him. The toughest part of the process is cutting through the thick rubber. But it’s not too bad…. About 5-7 passes and it’s a pretty clean cut!

    I demo'd a concrete slab at the house years back. I jack hammered the concrete into football sized pieces and loaded them in the truck by hand to haul to the dump. To prevent denting the hell out of the bed, I dropped a 1/2" sheet of plywood in. That was back before lumber prices elevated to stupid high levels.

    Saber saw and a coarse wood blade cuts this stuff really nice! I put a scrap of 2" foam underneath while cutting. Just make sure your blade doesn't reach THROUGH the foam.
    Also, one mat fit my 2015 Tacoma almost perfectly, no bowties necessary. Just needed 3" deep cutouts for the wheel wells, which I scribed in the same way you would scribe baseboard molding for a wavy floor.
    Finally, my Tacoma came with an integrated plastic bedliner, which I have always hated. It is way too slippery. The smooth side (top) of this mat appears to be almost as slippery, so I flipped mine over. The round dots are facing up and seem to be a little more grippy.
    Thanks for the idea!

I had thought I’d have more engagement on that platform and do more of those kinda off the cuff videos. Of course, I did only do one mention of it on here and I know I should’ve done more….but I was thinking I wanted more content there before I started mentioning it more here. I guess I ‘chicken and egg’d’ the thing…. As in neither came first🤦‍♂️
      But I will let you know soon and I will make sure everyone gets what they contributed….

      @@homesteadonomics well stated, assembling good content is a in-depth, time consuming process. Thanks for the reply!👍🏼👌🏼

    👍 Any ideas on how to cover up the bolts in the tailgate? When I drag stuff out of the bed of the truck, particularly garbage bags, they catch on those bolts and 1/2 the time they tear open.

    Could you make concrete stamps from horse stall mats?

    I like the bowtie, joint, but did you consider any type of glue to bond the seam together? Red Barn suggests a urethane based caulking adhesive such as Sika-Flex 221 or 227, which is black in color

    I thought about using this stuff but by the time i buy the mats and have to fit them neatly i just figured it would be cheaper just to spray the Raptor. No to mention im not too crazy about having to piece them together. Dont get me wrong i like the whole idea and i actually used some old conveyer belt that was 5 ft wide and you talk about stout. Holy shit but it also weighed about 120 lbs so i just got tires of trying other options and just sprayed. Im going to be doing a coatover with some new 2 cartridge rhino liner. Now thats the true professional bedliner when its in 2 cartridges like big caulk tubes. The one im gonna try i think is called Phoenix Guardian (same as Rhino). Idk i guess ill find out when i try to attempt it. But the stall mats work too

      Thank you! Sadly I’ve been hearing that for about 2 years. I don’t know if I’m shadow banned or what has happened.
