Well. Here's Box #3 of 2022-23 Upper Deck Artifacts Hockey. This is definitely the craziest Artifacts box I've ever smashed. What on EARTH homeslices?

And Congratulations on a fantastic box. I know some people don't like redemptions but I don't mind waiting a little for something. Especially when it's a short print of a fantastic player. Or multiple cards in this case. I am a little surprised at 3 redemptions in a box though. I don't think I've seen that before. Still doesn't change the fact that, that was a great box.

Wow. What a weird box. Never seen a box with 4 redemptions before. Most half cases (10 boxes) usually yield about 3-4 redemptions from what I've seen. #Dryden

After 3 boxes I’m all Artifaxed-out. Same old, same old. I mean I guess the redemptions are kinda cool, but nothing close to the much cooler vintage things you could theoretically get.

#dryen This is an extremely unusual box. Never seen one with so many redemptions. One nutsy thing about Artifacts is that most Breakers random Wildcards, SP Redemptions, etc because they don't want to wait for the checklist so you could buy the cheapest team and still end up with a massive card from a top team.

I'd gather it was a collation error whereby the rest of the inner will be light in redemptions. But, who knows.
@@Fultoncards I'm very curious about their randomization process and how they implement it. Its probably easier to figure out how Topps does it since they're public.
I've done better with these than most $140+ boxes of cards lately...but not much better.

This video should serve as a warning on why you don't open Artifacts 2+ years after the release. It's a redemption-heavy product.
Ok. I'll be the dummy. I've never dealt with redemption cards before. How does this actually work? #dryden
Great question Mike. In fact, I wish ppl were more upfront with all their Qs, as the hobby is so endlessly deep and complicated. There are two types: 1. Redemptions, 2. Aurum Bounties. Bounties are immediately time sensitive, as the first ppl to complete them can receive extra cards, including a rare Aurum dual auto. On the other hand, normal redemptions usually expire in a year or two, with a grace period (often an extra year). But some companies like Leaf continue to honor them. You go to the UD corporate website (www.upperdeck.com/Customer-Care/Redemptions.aspx), create a profile, and input the scratch code on the redemption card. Then you wait up to six months, usually. The checklist on CardboardConnection is updated at some point to tell you which player it is. Some redemptions for other products have the player name on the redemption card, but rarely for Artifacts as the rookies might still be unknown. Now. If your redemption is expired beyond the grace period, you still have the UD raffle. You have to mail in your card with your name and address on it, and they enter it into a raffle with three tiers (with three different price ranges, based on the value of who your card was). At one of the conventions, UD has an actual draw and pulls a replacement card for your expired redemption. You get that replacement card. And, they won't always guarantee it will be hockey. I once had a Gretzky/Spezza/Thornton SPA Sign of the Times #/25 Redemption from 2003-04 SPA which was expired. The raffle won me a Howe/Zeta/Stevie Y SOTT #/25. Note: you can only enter auto-redemptions into the UD raffle. If you have a non-auto expired redemption, it is dead. You can't enter into the last ditch raffle. Panini used to always honor ten-year-old redemptions, but now replaces cards with website credit points I believe. With Leaf/ITG, you just have to email them. In fact, even with UD, you should first email them.
@@Fultoncards Truly love how in depth your explanation of the redemptions work. As if we aren't already paying a decent amount of cash, now we have to chase more cards? It is a lot like gambling. I've never pulled a redemption card and hopefully never will. Even with your explanation, it just seems very convoluted. Just put the cards in the packs.

You make two great points. (1) The "hobby" is now absolutely gaming and gambling, on dismal odds at brutal price points. And, group breakers have inserted a middle-man markup. The legalized gambling aimed even at children is something I bleat on about all the time, and why I explain odds and have musical beds to emphasize my sentimental attachment to a lifelong hobby of mine. My OPC Gretzky RC came from a 20c pack during my childhood. Today, a tin of the UD The Cup is $1,250 USD. (2) The bounties are really just an extra "game" that few partake in. It's like old-school wax rapper offers. It's very geeky. In terms of "real" redemptions, they do try to put the autos in the packs, but often have to chase after players to sign. Especially those not in the league yet. Most autos are included. Redeeming them is super easy. You just input a scratch code online and eventually the auto arrives. (Where it does suck is if you are like me and buy old discounted products. Sometimes they are discounted because of expired redemptions. Often, old products aren't discounted, even if your McDavid redemption is no longer good. The real tough part is figuring which cards are redemptions for ancient products, to gauge box value.)
@@Fultoncards Yes, I remember the days of buying football cards for 25 cents a pack. Getting into hockey in 1990 when packs and boxes were very reasonable. Not only that, but everything was hobby, not broken down to retail, blasters, mega blasters etc. I stopped collecting in '98 and restarted last year. That is why I have questions. It was a bit overwhelming getting back into all of this. Thanks again for your explanations. #dryden
