Mondeo ST24 fixing a faulty IMRC

  • My Mondeo ST24 was lacking power above 3500 RPM . It was all due to a faulty transistor in the IMRC (Inlet Manifold Runner Control) located under the Manifold cover. Easy to replace and at such a small cost! Many thanks to
    MrMoss2001 ! :-)

You sir, are a bloody genius!!!
I have just done this fix on my '98 Cougar that has been fannying around with intermittent power loss for ages now.
Lovely cheap fix, but it certainly isn't a 5 minute job for a non-mechanic like me.
Thank you so much for posting this !!

Just done this job again, on my brother's V6 Cougar. Once again, it has transformed the car's performance.
I bought three of these transistors on Ebay for just £2.30 each.... Two successfully fitted and one kept as a spare !!

My Cougar's IMRC was fucking around when hot so I jammed the secondary flaps open and ran it for a while, but it was a little lumpy low down.
I have now extended the wiring and moved the IMRC box to behind the nearside suspension strut turret....it stays much cooler there.
You will need to disconnect the cable from the secondary throttle linkage to do this, and ensure the cable has a smooth run with no kinks.
Also, remove the cover via the 4 screws and check for any slack in the cable by manually rotating the gears in the IMRC unit.
I now have a 2.5 Duratec that pulls much better at higher rpm when hot, without the lumpiness at lower rpm.
Hope this is of help to anyone with this engine who is experiencing power loss when hot.

@ Carlos If your IMRC is working correctly like in the video but you still have the lack of engine pull, check the cable that connects the IMRC to the manifold itself as these can snap/seize up also check that the runners themselves are not seized through lack of grease,

@madfiles7 Thank you so much! I'll give it a try and comment back. Transistor is only cents and a friend will help me with the soldering. I read now the forum and even a circuit diagram of the IMRC. This was a big mistake on Ford for placing the IMRC on a spot where there's so much heat.

@Romain36320 The IMRC was faulty before replacing the transistor, so I guess by replacing it fixed the fault. Its good that you've found a alternative transistor, worth knowing! :-)

Hi there great video. I have a 1999 Ford Mondeo SI, it has a 2.5L V6 Duratec. I have 2 problems with my car. The first Problem I have is that the IMRC only moves when above 6000RPM, and the second problem is that the car won't go above 160KM/h.

@joryramos Hi. I was given the information by MrMoss2001. I also read about it online being a common fault as the transistor breaks down with heat and the IMRC is poorly positioned. I took the gamble of buying a new transistor at a small cost ,and fix it myself to see if it would cure the problem.

First thing I did was remove the 'cosmetic' plastic cover so that HEAT can escape away from the IMRC unit, which actually gets quite hot. Heat and electronics don't mix.

@joryramos I have also added a link to the video description to the website I got the information from. Hope this helps.

Does the IMRC still operate when the vehicle is hot? And may be worth seeing if there are any fault codes present. The fault may caused by the EGR or DPFE sensor.

Also try changing your fuel filter, a smell of fuel isn't install on older fords sometimes especially on start up and during warming up

My cable in the imrc module is intact, but I don't get the motor engaging, burnt smell around the soldering points of the internal motor(blk and red wire) should be the transistor? We're can I pick up a transistor?

@madfiles7 Hello, Are you sure that the transistor was faulty ???
Mine was simply not electrically insulated (probably "helped" by the heat)... I doubt that temperature only destruct a transistor made to operate until 150°C...
    Personally I've mounted a MJF6388 (native insulated).
Thank's for this instructive video. ;-)

Hi There, How did you find out the transistor was the only faulty component on the IMRC. Mine has a faulty IMRC but I wonder how did you tested it. Any help is appreciated. Mondeo 2004 V6 170 HP. Thanks, BTW Replacing the IMRC would run me $540 US Dlls. + labor.

Hi, i have a question for you, help me please... Your lacking power when the transitor is broke is always or sometimes? its because i have the same prob, but sometimes lost power, but not always, specially lost power when full throttle for a log time... Sorry for mi English and thanks

Changing resistor to my IMRC didn't fix it. If I remember correctly, the IMRC operated but it operated wrong, it was all the time pulling the cable even on low rpm. But I bought a another IMRC for 30 euros.

Is the transistor the same type as on Focus ST 170?

  • @opexo
    @opexo 4 роки тому

ok so in case the IMRC does not operate at all - replace the transistor and maybe the diode. But if the imrc operates ok with starting of the car and suddenly after some minutes it decides to just stop working and lists errors P1518 and P1520 - then what? Bad connections/solder joints? Can it be something else?

May be worth if you can, moving the IMRC. And mount it under the battery tray,as I have now, as the heat can still break down the transistor.
