4 years ago I started Veganuary because of this channel, in particular one of Eds lectures in a university, so thank you Ed I have now been happily vegan for 4 years.
Well, 1st of January, a friend of mine decided they wanted to learn about veganism. Me, being the only vegan she knows, decided to show her some UA-cam videos, some influencers, some easy recipes, and a heavily-edited version of Gary Yourofsky's speech (nothing graphic ⛔). 20 mins later of some tears, questioning their upbringing, wanting to beat up the people bullying the cows and some hypothetical questions later, off to the corner shop we went for movie snacks:- "Are these vegan?! Aw look, omg, no milk in these! I can have these! I LOVE THESE! Can I cook vegan stuff at yours? Can we do vegan cakes?! Omg Vegan ice cream! I wanna go all the way with this! 🤩" I'm incredibly proud of her and it feels amazing to see someone make such a big lifestyle change so openly and quickly. 🙂❤️🙂
that is so cute dude. i love hearing stuff like this. me and my partner have been vegan a year and a half now and we still get excited like that when we find neat vegan stuff or try new recipes. hearing more and more these stories make me very optimistic about society and the future of animal welfare.
I just signed up this year for health reasons and then I binge watched Earthlings followed by Dominion. I cannot say I recommend doing this as I still don't feel okay, but it solidified that I can no longer be a part of that cycle and will stick with this new journey long after January ends.
Health isn't a reason for veganism, it's a benefit of veganism. If it's for one's health, one is plant-based. Plant-based is for yourself; veganism is for everyone else. Veganism isn't just a diet, it's a lifestyle. Veganism is the acknowledgement that all animals have the right to not be kidnapped, enslaved, exploited, raped, tortured, and murdered and acting accordingly, and respecting living things. Veganism is the mark of a principled person.
Enjoying a hearty veggie soup as I watch this. Haven’t had a single animal product in over 2 years. Thank you Ed for educating the world on veganism ✌️

Been vegan 2 years now thanks to Earthling Ed I just feel amazing , have followed all of my dreams , and been a successeful piano teacher , while having so much energy everyday Bless you ED
The idea of the nagging suspiscion that vegans might be right was literally the thing that made me change. I spent the biggest part of my 20's hating vegans and making stupid arguments that I now, laugh at, but all the while in the back of my mind, I downright knew that there was no moral justification for killing and eating sentient beings without need.
That part really resonated with me as well. Before I was vegan, I’ve always found vegans to be dreadfully irritating and inconvenient. I’d even crack jokes at them with my best friend sometimes. But despite all of that, I knew I myself never had a good moral justification for paying for animal products, and even the ones I’ve heard were never convincing. I never really looked into the issue, I had just secretly hoped that somewhere out there, someone _did_ have a good moral justification, and I wouldn’t have to give up my tasty meat. I figured since it was so normalized, surely it had to be permissible in some way. At the same time, I always had that “nagging suspicion” that vegans were right, but I just couldn’t bring myself to explicitly accept it because I loved the taste of animal products. Fast forward years later, I get interested in moral philosophy. Moral philosophy is a deeply interesting subject, but I only ever treated it as a fun intellectual challenge to think about hypothetical thought experiments/moral dilemmas that would never actually occur in the real world. But then every now and then, you come across the subject of animal ethics. That’s pretty inconvenient, because no longer are you dealing with moral situations in the abstract. This one is a very real world moral situation, and if you believe in it, it requires of you to change your actions to align your beliefs with your actions. I finally decided to give veganism the time of day, and realized just how palpably wrong I had been all these years. The case for veganism is watertight, and despite my searching, I could not find a single good moral justification to continue paying for animal products. That cogent moral justification I had secretly wished for just never existed, every moral justification I’ve heard in defense of paying for animal products were totally unconvincing. I knew that I had only ever clung to this hope because I didn’t want to change, but now that I’ve realized the validity of veganism and the weakness of its objections, I knew I was morally obligated to change, and until I changed I could not call myself a moral person. I didn’t realize I’d be typing that much, forgive me lol. Got carried away telling my origin story as a vegan. :)
@@johnchesterfield9726 Thanks for sharing all that! It’s great to tell our stories of how we thought it was acceptable and that veganism was wrong but still changed our minds. If we can change anyone can
@@johnchesterfield9726 Ha, maybe Marvel will produce your origin story!! :) :) But seriously, thanks for sharing your story. I also found vegetarians really annoying when I was in my 20s (I'm in my 50s, when I was in my 20s, I don't think I'd ever heard of vegans), and resisted it for years. But because this was before social media and the much greater presence of veganism, I basically didn't think about it. Until finally (for various reasons), I decided it was about time to align my ethics with my actions and quit laughing off the uncomfortable truth of what I was doing. Been vegan for about 9 years now. My tl/dr point is that apparently a lot of us were hostile to veganism and now only regret not doing it sooner. Here's hoping that more and more people come around to the same conclusion 🤞🤞🤞
I feel the amount of vegans starting in veganuary is higher, many of us just do it without signing up to anything, i did it because I can't bear the cruelty, I'm now a year and 8 days vegan, and will be forever !
My friend went vegan last year and stayed that way because of veganuary! And I went vegan two years ago in January which I think was coincidence, but maybe I had seen an advert and that's why I watched vegan documentaries.
it's striking only because vegan diets will strike your organs when they become nutrient deficient. Is that what you're referring to? Don't overreact to emotions thats my advise

@@philosophía1998 but we are humans u Muppet and as a human being we know what is right and what is wrong morally and ethically + meat is murder and it isn't healthy.
The crying cow hit me right in the heart. Being vegan doesn't make these types of images any easier to watch. If anything, I find them harder to watch by the day. I am so glad to see that the Veganuary sign-ups are increasing exponentially. Makes me feel really hopeful about the future, despite everything going on in the world right now.
I think the most important part of veganuary is that people who participate can experience the _possibility_ of their going vegan. I didn't figure out that I was capable of being vegan until after I realized I was one. It's all that mental clutter I used to have about things like "most vegetarians are unhealthy," "I couldn't possibly live without sushi or cheese," etc. It's also good for teaching the various reasons -- I didn't know about the climate change reason until less than a year before I ended up going vegan. (That was a big factor. Learning that eating animal products contributed heavily to climate change was part of my becoming reducitarian, and from there it was a much smaller and less conscious step to veganism.) Now I consider climate change the most important reason to spread veganism (and reducitarianism). Not that the treatment of animals doesn't matter; it does. But climate change threatens _all_ life on this planet. It's not sustainable, with or without suffering of animals and humans. People who participate in veganuary get to find out that they can find enough good food to eat, they will likely be healthier rather than less healthy, they will probably find out more of the reasons veganism is a good choice, and they can clear out some of that clutter in their minds at the root of their cognitive dissonance about animal products. I've never done veganuary myself, because I became vegan before I heard about it, but I think it's a great tool for teaching and learning.
once we fix our energy supply, animal products probably won't have the same kind of impact anymore climate "vegans" going back to exploiting animals sustainably would be tragic the only real reason to be vegan is for the animals
@@C-shadow (and health, there's no way eating animal products would ever be healthy, but i disagree with your premise, animal exploitation especially under a capitalist organisation of the economy is inherently destructive, and fixing energy supply problems is 1) not the only goal and 2) not offset the harm caused by animal farming)
@@C-shadow I started out as an environmental vegan and then I became more sensitive to what’s happening to the animals as a result. The emotional wall I had built up in order to rationalize eating them started crumbling. I would never go back to eating animals or animal products because there’s no need to.
@@C-shadow Why would climate vegans go back to exploiting animals? I don't see that. On the other hand, once there's lab-grown meat, you might have only-for-the-animals vegans going back to eating lab-grown meat instead of plants, while health vegans still ate only plants. I kind of doubt there would be many, but it's still possible. Those of us who have multiple reasons for being vegan are more likely to continue to eat only plants than people who only have one reason.
@@TaraRoseAstrologer I'm glad things went that way for you, but eating a plant-based diet for the environment is not being vegan. Veganism is an ethical stance against the unnecessary exploitation of fellow sentient beings.
I just realized I have been 2 years vegan as of a few days ago(with a vegetarian slip up for a few weeks at the start of the pandemic) and I will never look back.

@UCoukjNSbWWKZ_eE8a7hb3Sw you're thinking about it too literally. The idea behind it is a question of mentality. If we needlessly torture, abuse and murder animals, then there can be no hope for peace between us humans. Btw the original comment needs to cite Tolstoy as the person who said this - it bugs me when people quote someone and don't credit them.

But it's still nothing to what happens to those animals and the injustice they face at the hands of our species. Let's keep fighting for them! Also, don't forget to take care of your mental health please. We need to stay strong to help more animals
@@m.g.3913 Bobby’s Perspective (anti vegan UA-camr) said that the movies like dominion are actually vegan propaganda. Went vegan one January "just to try for maybe a month". I didn't expect to finish a month, but as I wasn't eating meat and I watched vegan documentaries I realized this was something I needed to commit to seriously. It's very interesting and something to think about. I actually saw today a post on Instagram that said you would think with Veganuary increasing in popularity, especially in the UK, meat demand would have decreased - quite the opposite, more animals than ever are slaughtered (in the UK). We need to keep fighting for the animals.
The number of animals killed has gone up because of population rise but per capita meat consumption has gone down. Meaning, the overall numbers are increasing because the UK population is increasing but the amount of meat each person is eating is going down. (17% in the last decade, which is significant)

Hope its still going well. It took me 35 years to realize I could live without cheese. However, after quitting cold turkey, it only took 2-3 weeks for the cravings to go away. Now I look back 6 years later and the very idea of animal secretions is revolting to me. Your taste buds take a little time to recover, but you'll actually start to taste other foods much better after that 2-3 weeks. You'll even start enjoying vegan cheese. :-)

Got to hand it to ya ed , your logical and rational formation of arguments , calm explanations of scientific literature have re-convinced me to go vegan. I went vegan in 2017 for a year but slipped back to eating eggs and dairy , only due to laziness , and have been vegetarian until yesterday. I some how found myself gravitating towards watching your debates for veganism and there is literally no reason why i shouldnt be. Thanks again for what you do , no other vegan activist has been as convincing or impactful as you have
Thank you for going back to veganism. I was vegetarian for so long before coming to terms with the facts. Eggs and dairy are, in my opinion, the cruelest part of the meat industry. I also think they are at least as unhealthy as meat for humans to consume, and dairy cows in particular are terrible for the environment since ruminant animals emit methane (among a hundred other reasons that overlap with all animals raised for meat).
Don't forget to take a b12 supplement, since we vegans generally don't eat enough poop to get it "naturally." Other than that, please keep researching the issue. The more you learn, the more committed you will become. I'm over 6 years in and am more committed every day to helping the whole world transition with us.
Compound multiplication. Every new Vegan goes on to inspire at least 2 or more people to go Vegan. ps - thank YOU to everyone who is already Vegan AND to every new Vegan AND to every single person who is seriously considering going Vegan. Thank YOU for choosing compassion!!!
Lets try for 100 each, learn all the reasons why in great detail. Whatever people will be most compelled by, whether it's animal welfare, their own health, or the environment, we can use logic to make all the reasons clear.

We are Indians , and we are hella kind .So we don't need to promote these things in our great country . Peoples are already aware about it. Brother u r really doing Awesome.. really proud of u. we are with u always. Really very important .
It is slowly changing in India. The young think it's cool to eat meat and dairy. We are beginning to realise that a non plant based diet is very bad for health. But these fat cat men at the top will not want to loose their cash cow, as western diets ditch meat and dairy. I guarantee that they will start marketing meat and dairy in India and other countries. They will use the same language that was used on us. Its healthy, you'll get stronger and so on. I am seriously worried that because the big rich men at the top look down on non westernized countries. This is what will happen. Watch heart disease and cancer rise as that happens. I really hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for sharing Mike!
Good man.

But seriously, thanks for sharing your story.

All the new plant based stuff on the market is such a blessing. Being vegan/vegetarian is easier than it's ever been
Of course businesses would do it. They buy cheap and sell high. And these lemming customers are ideal for them
Only vegan please; vegetarianism still supports animal exploitation and mass murder.
Vegan and vegetarian aren't the same, but I get what you're saying
I worry about the health problems associated with ultra processed foods and most of the new vegan products fall into this category.
easier? Destroying your health can be easy yes
I've never done veganuary myself, because I became vegan before I heard about it, but I think it's a great tool for teaching and learning.
once we fix our energy supply, animal products probably won't have the same kind of impact anymore
climate "vegans" going back to exploiting animals sustainably would be tragic
the only real reason to be vegan is for the animals

As long as there are slaughterhouses there will be battlefields.
@UCoukjNSbWWKZ_eE8a7hb3Sw you're thinking about it too literally. The idea behind it is a question of mentality. It's very interesting and something to think about. I actually saw today a post on Instagram that said you would think with Veganuary increasing in popularity, especially in the UK, meat demand would have decreased - quite the opposite, more animals than ever are slaughtered (in the UK). We need to keep fighting for the animals.
The number of familys that pets such as dogs has increased, so more mouths to feed
The number of animals killed has gone up because of population rise but per capita meat consumption has gone down. Meaning, the overall numbers are increasing because the UK population is increasing but the amount of meat each person is eating is going down. (17% in the last decade, which is significant)

My domestic partner gets upset when I talk about veganism and I know its because he really doesnt want to think about it cuz he knows its wrong....but I will truck on and continue to speak up no matter how uncomfortable people get....
I am the only vegan In my family of 5. I dont go on. But i do play Ed, Joey, James, Gary and various documentaries really loud. A lot. My hubby overheard seaspiracy and hasn't eaten any sea creatures since. Only eats eggs from our friends who have rescued hens. Still a long way to go.
It's a start though.
Consider watching the Game Changers with him. It has a very male-specific audience in mind.
Amazing vid as always! Thanks for your work.
It's like how some induction motors require a lot of current to kickstart their run cycle but once they get up to speed the current drops significantly.
