I began the first page on an airplane from San Diego to Colorado. Always remember that. I actually liked how thick the paperback was; made it feel more special than the average paperback.
I just finished this book in 20 days I really enjoyed it, but I’m so glad I’m done now cause some areas were so drawn out. I really liked the last few hours on the ending for the journey back..
Non-native English speaker here. Been planning to read this and Swan Song by McCammon once I'm done with the rough patch of work I'm currently in, as an effort to improve the language. Really can't wait.
I agree. So many characters. I love Stephen King and his stories....for the most part. Every once in awhile I read one I wouldn't want to pick up again. You did an excellent job reviewing this book.
Have you read The Dark Tower series yet? No reason to rush it if you haven't, it serves as a nice great finale of Stephen King's work in a way, and seeing his narration, storytelling and character work evolve and take so many forms throughout the years and novels lets this series really shine!
@@mirandas_universe Well, don't rush it, reading more King first is good anyway! I recommend Salem's Lot if you haven't yet. It's a shorter one, but one of my favorites from him! :D
Just finished my first read of The Stand I really struggled with the amount of names at the beginning but it didn’t take long until I fell in love with the characters. 10/10 would recommend
M-O-O-N that spells Miranda! 😄 I haven't read this book since I was 12 but your review does inspire me to pick it up again. It's a beast of a book but one worth the effort as I remember. I think you're right on the overwhelming amount of characters though, I had that problem when I first read it too. So many to keep track of. But the symbolism is fantastic, especially if you're familiar with the Bible. A lot of endtime analogies there. The Dark Man is a great villain and his importance in the Stephen King "Multiverse" can't be underestimated! So glad you loved Tom and Nick too, their relationship was great and Tom Cullen was my absolute favorite character. He was beautifully written and has extra meaning for me since I have an Autistic brother and two special needs cousins. Plus he was played by Patrick Star in the 90's miniseries which was phenomenal casting in my opinion! So glad you loved the book overall and your review was top notch as always. Thanks for the video!
Ty, your comment makes me so happy, as always!! I haven't seen the miniseries but I'm intrigued to check it out now! My favorite part of this story was definitely all of the Biblical symbolism. Also back to Tom, I love how much he means to you! I also love how he was the only one who got out from under the Dark Man's nose, that within itself was such a cool detail that has lots of deeper meanings. Thanks for the comment again Ty! I hope life is treating you well! 😊
@@mirandas_universe Well thanks, I'm glad my comments make you happy! 🙂 The original miniseries isn't great but it does have great elements in it. Bill Fagerbakke is definitely one of them and Rob Lowe as Nick is pretty good too. Randall Flagg is very 90's though... 😅 It's worth a watch just don't expect the deep character developments that are in the book. If you ever do watch it I'd love to hear your thoughts and comparison! As for Tom, I LOVE that Flagg only sees the moon when he tries to find him. Great stuff! 🌚 Life is indeed treating me well, hope everything is going great for you too!
I just finished The Shining and I’m hooked on King. Next I want to read Salem’s Lot, IT, and The Stand!!!!!!! Considering listening to The Stand on Audible, narrator is incredible.
The Stand is definitely one of the best books I've ever read. Many years ago, back in the 1980s my father was a huge Stephen King fan and would always go to the library and get about 3 or 4 Stephen King books. One day I started reading some of the short stories from his first short story book. I thought t the writing was great. I read the Stand and IT, both large books. I was knocked out by both of them. But particularly the Stand. I believe I've read it about 20 times now and each time I always get immersed in the story even though I know where it's heading. I keep reading bits I forgot about. It's an amazing book. A brilliant idea. The characters are first rate. ' Baby, Can You Dig Your Man'.
Finished the Stand a few days ago. Wow what a journey…i’ll be honest though, the last 100 pages rly did ruin the book for me. However the characters were awesome and exciting to see how they evolved.
Thanks for this review! I'm reading (listening to) it at the moment on Audible, and it's over 48 hours long... I'm just about 13 hours in at the moment and I'm enjoying it- but oh my, so many characters!
Baby Can You Dig Your Man? :) I’m about 2/3rds of the way through (finally made it past the monstrous 44-48 chapters!) and I am loving this book. It’s really picking up, thanks for the review!
I saw the 90's mini series as a kid didn't want it to end bought the comics cause I didnt like to read books at the time it was great. Then I bought 3 books the stand, It and frozen hell. Read the stand before IT and it was and still is the best thing I ever read it got me hooked on reading. And like in my childhood I did not want it to end.
The complete and uncut edition is the only version in print and it was also modified for the time it was published like setting it in 1990 and including references to 80’s pop culture
Hi... I just stumbled across this video of this book and I just finished reading this a couple of months ago. It's funny because I started to read this book during my last year of college but put it down because I just couldn't find the time to read it after my break for the Christmas holiday. Then, I forgot where I left off and the length of the book was daunting to me so kind of forgot about it for a while. Then, the pandemic hit and this book kept popping up in facebook groups that I'm in and so on. So, taking that as a sign, I figured I'd read it and I don't think there could have been a more perfect time. I really enjoyed this book and I felt going through this pandemic, I could relate and empathize with the characters as I think many of us were feeling the same things as these characters were feeling and facing. Nick and Thom are some of my favorite characters. I loved their relationship. The government and stuff kind of bored me too because I've never been into politics and all that either but I do see the importance of it in this story. Loved this book! Great review and I'll take a look around here!
Wonderful review, Miranda. I have three iterations of The Stand: the 817-page 1980 Signet paperback edition, slightly revised according to King's Author's Note; the 1141-page 'uncut' Signet paperback from 1991; and the 2011 Anchor Books 1439-page version. Wish I had all those Post-it notes in mine.
@@pauls8 The Anchor Books edition has everything that was cut from the original 1978 hardcover; even the first 1980 paperback is revised. The 1141-page version is identical to Anchor Books' 1439-page version where a much larger type font was used. To answer your question here is what was added back into The Stand, which is another way of saying what was left out to begin with----start at the 19 minute mark: ua-cam.com/video/dsKJ3ZAU1wE/v-deo.html
Just finished the book myself. I really liked it. Just one question... What prompts you to mark pages with the markers, is it for you personally or for your review videos?
it is for me personally, I like to be able to look back years later and see all the notes I took. I also like to be able to find certain things easily if I want to, and the sticky notes make it much easier for me since each color means something different. :)
First time to your channel, and I loved your review. I am about a quarter of the way through my third reading of The Stand and was curious to hear others’ thoughts on UA-cam. I couldn’t agree more; Randall Flagg is a phenomenal villain. I just finished the Dark Tower series and wanted to spend more time with “the man in black”. If you have not read the Dark Tower series, I couldn’t recommend it more. Another 5000 pages with the Dark Man! The first book is…well….not good, but it the remainder of the series makes the slog well worth it.
‘IT’ was the first King book I ever read, and I avoided his books for years after because it didn’t resonate with me. So glad I picked up The Stand later after hearing it was his best work. Stand blows ‘IT’ away in every capacity for me, from the flow to the character development, but I grant it’s probably a lot harder to flesh out memorable characters writing mainly about children: just my 2 cents
a few months behind on this video but you've sold me! I attempted to start this a year ago but was too intimidated by the number of pages buuuuut you've convinced me :)
I read this about 5 years before King released the uncut version and I knew there was a lot missing. However, after reading the newer version, I liked the original better.
Oh good. I read the edited version of this book (and really enjoyed it) back in the 90's but I forgot it all. So, I decided to pick it up again and found out later in a video after I had purchased it that King later put out an unredacted version of it and I was really hoping that that's what I had just purchased. That's why I clicked when I saw it was the same cover as it appears in your thumbnail. Turns out I got the expanded version. Now I'm really excited to reread it. Yay.

I just got this book in today but seems so much smaller then the one you are holding in this video. Is there different sizes? Mine just seems really small. The one I got has the same cover as yours
Hi there! Yes, there are two different editions of this book. There is the original edition SK published in the 1970s and then the uncut/complete edition, which is newer! The original edition of The Stand is 345 pages shorter than the uncut. I've heard great things about both, I just personally read the complete version :)
Is this book and the especially post apocalyptic world devastated by a killer virus scary because it is so relatable? I own a copy of the stand and i'm going to read it soon, if the good versus evil part is played out well and if some situations some of us might experience with Covid 19 like depression, loss of purpose and direction are all playing into this larger battle of good versus evil, this book will certainly be the book i connect most with the pandemic. Great review btw i am enjoying your videos and you seem to be an amazing person:) Greetings from Germany
This book definitely plays on the idea of finding purpose, especially in a world where humanity was almost eradicated. It doesn't specifically talk about depression/lose of direction but that's mostly because the story follows people who are trying to create society again and fight against the villain. However, Im excited that you want to read it and I hope you enjoy it! :)

So poorly overstretched.. there were lines that were good but it's so poorly overstretched..
this book is garbage.
