  • Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grand Jatte by the French painter Georges Seurat is one of the most recognizable paintings of our time - and one of the strangest! What was the first post-impressionist painter and inventor of pointillism trying to tell us with his world-famous masterpiece?

Thanks for bringing forward an artistic and a social experiment! Colors are dots, keeping their individual wavelengths and complementing each other. People are dots, keeping social distancing and complementing each other. What we see is not what it is. Saturday theater. Fascinating!

And here is for you a very clever artist who could be considered a gand dad of conceptual in painting and even digital art now - a very smooth and interesting presentation, thank you !

I've always LOVED this painting. The static, decorative figures with no faces make it very modern to me.

True - it looks very contemporary, spare the 19th century clothes.

An intriguing and challenging painting and it's almost like Seurat has foreseen the future with the people sharing the same space but at the same time everybody so detached and absorbed into their cell-phone communications.. Once again thanks for the interesting video!💐

Another excellent video, Bory. Phillip seems to be having fun with the video effects :-) There are clearly parallels between Seurat and contemporary movements like Op Art etc but I like the way your discussion concentrates on the people in the picture, and links them to the Pointallism. You’re right: they’re like spooky robots, or AI people (I’m currently reading ‘Klara and the Sun,’ about ‘Artificial Friends’ for children, and this painting could be a scene from it.)

Thank you, this is an interesting observation. Yes, Philip is learning new tricks all the time, I admire his patience 😀!

Pointillism has never been one of my favorite styles. It seems quite tedious and a bit flat. I did enjoy your comparison of the relaxed
day in the park vs. crowded tenements and factories. Also, your comments that the people have no expression, on the few faces that we can actually see.
You certainly, as you often do, brought out points that I had not considered previously. Very interesting.

As much as the innovative and very clever technique deserve admiration and respect, I must admit the picture doesn't fill me with joy. The almost tangible lack of human emotion makes it cold and unrelatable. And why is my eye always drawn to that steam boat above the man with the trumpet that looks like it's sinking, is it?

This is a really insightful comment, thank you very much! It hadn't occurred to me, but you are so right.
