In Rush’s case they spent a career progressing and evolving their style backed by incredible musicianship and lyricism. Not sure how you can dislike every era of Geddy’s voice since it changed considerably. And Maiden, especially in the 80s, was unmatched when it came to metal in terms of songwriting. Bruce’s vocal style might seem out of place today, but his talent is objectively legitimate. They’ve admittedly fallen off over the last 20 years, but their first seven albums are metal masterpieces. Largely agree with your assessments. I think that vocals are critical to whether or not I can listen to most music. Rush and AC/DC are out for me. There are notable exceptions though. The first Rush album had a rough garage band sound and it worked for me despite Geddy Lee's vocals. After that, he has in my opinion, the worst voice in all of popular mainstream rock. I also agree with your take on the early work of Pink Floyd, however there are some gems to be found on Ummagumma. I would ask that you revisit and listen to the live album for Astronomy Domine and the studio album for Grantchester Meadows, and the instrumental cuts of the Narrow Way parts I & II, and especially the Narrow Way Part III which I would put forth as a great example of their earlier work. Finally, I am mystified with your take on Steely Dan. Aja was the sunset of their catalog for me. I find that the albums "The Royal Scam", "Katie Lied", and particularly "Can't Buy A Thrill" are their finest work.

I have been listening to music for over 40 years, and I have to confess I've never heard any of Pink Floyd's early stuff. For me they start with 'Dark Side of the Moon' and end with 'The Final Cut.' They weren't Pink Floyd after Roger Waters left.
I don't find them "unlistenable," but I think The Doors are WAY overrated. I don't like Jim Morrison's singing, and his "poetry" sucks. I do like "The End" and "Riders on the Storm," but other than that I can take or leave them. And I kinda feel the same way about Queen.

I was surprised at how much I agreed with you. For example, Rush, I like 2112 but Geddy's sqeaky vocals do my head in. ACDC..Back in Black is a great album but after that, how many times can you re-write the same songs? Iron Maiden's first 2 albums are worth a listen, I really do get the dislike of Bruce's vocals, he overdoes it too often, the best thing about them in concert is when they play the tape of "Doctor Doctor" by UFO ( one of my favourite bands). Queensryche, i've only heard their early stuff, Queen of the Reich is a great ep.

Same with operation : mindcrime , and DT for a lot of their early catalogue, my favourite is still when dream and day unite and a change of seasons but again you are fair and honest. My vote for a band i can't get into against popular opinion has to be Muse.... But at least you are respectful and i do agree with you about Floyd.... Meddle to Animals was their peak.... The Wall.... Hmmm , yea good in places and i do like the division bell

Led Zeppelin is an interesting choice. Is there anything in particular that makes you dislike them? I know several people that can’t listen to Robert Plant for too long. And to be fair, I don’t think people need to have a reason to dislike a band, sometimes it just doesn’t click with them and that’s totally ok.

The Song Kashmir makes me curse and turn off the radio everytime I hear it. I think a band I would put in as unlistenable to me would be Primus. I have nothing against them I just don't like any of their songs. I would say the same thing about Frank Zappa. I can appreciate how good a musician he was I simply don't really like any of his songs.
I would like to question your list and how you came up with it. Is it just hard rock? You don't like Nickelback but how do you feel about Coldplay or Creed? Motley Crue or Ratt?
You don't like Rush because of Geddy Lee's vocals. How do you feel about Bob Dylan? (for years I refused to listen to him because of his vocals but I loved his songs- and the covers done by other artists.) I now like him. (FYI I am a Rush fan lol)
I kind of agree with you on Dream Theater. I put them into the virtuoso category. To me they are clearly gifted but their songs seem to go on and on. Melody wise they don't seem to ebb and flow it seems like whenever I listen to them I feel like I have just run a marathon and I am exhausted. (Again I am a big Rush fan and loved Rush's 7-9 minute tomes from their past but don't necessary like it when others do it.)
What about a virtuoso guitar player like Tim Henson? He is incredible ...... for the first 3 minutes of a song and then it starts to sound like a drum solo that has gone on longer than 10 minutes. It is interesting who we all like and don't like.

You know a lot of your personal opinions I can understand how you arrived at. But you absolutely lost me at rush, Geddy Lee is a generational bass player and rush is probably one of the best prog rock groups of all time. Also in my opinion Dream Theater‘s appeal comes from the complexity of their music with odd time signatures and ever changing phases. I see their success akin to a band like tool. As it’s surprising how a band that is as big as they are make such unapologetic music.

I agree re Ac/ Dc. Let There Be Rock and, to a lesser extent, Powerage were the band's best albums. After the poppy Highway To Hell the band seemed to regurgitate the sameish sound with a few outstanding album tracks here and there. Okay i now Back In Black is a supposed classic but aside from from a couple of tracks it is a bit dull. As for Steely Dan the Aja album is always citied as their best but i personally prefer The Royal Scam...a masterpiece.

Hi Nick, re your aversion to the Pink Floyd studio output 1967-1970/71, I can understand it-as you don't quite say the songs meander whilst having production values that don't redeem the material. But the point for the post Barret Floyd was to create work that survived being tested on the road-and the material entertained who it was played to '68-'73, and toughened the band up as a touring unit. The oddity being how the albums never went out of print. It is as if PF understood brand value early without admitting it. Would looking at the work of Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets help you in any way? They do as good a job as anyone could do of making the old Pink Floyd sets sound alive and apt for 2024.

Pink Floyd you either prefer the Syd or Roger stuff. They transitioned so there was a few that were them experimenting with directions actually i think atom heart mother is quite compelling even if it's disjointed i admit.
Steely Dan and nickleback?! Steely Dan are at least interesting mumbling their words. Nickelback were post grunge and like yourself i drifted off music after grunge and britpop (here) which was huge along with various dance sub genres that broke alot of barriers down.
Yeah i think Nickelback were truly dreadful. Sorta average Christian rock without any meaning to the lyrics.
