    Something that makes it easier to tell which units belong to which side, is that the unit counters for the Foes of Napoleon have their strength and movement numbers in Gothic font.

    I actually picked up the old version because of the Alexander at Waterloo expansion. Heavier than I'd normally go for either tactical or Napoleonic, but I couldn't pass the opportunity to throw Macedonians at Wellington.

    Despite the word quibbling in the community, OSG's Library of Napoleonic Battles is STRICTLY OPERATIONAL. There are a few odd, tactical-esque wrinkles in those games (and add a bit of flavor, too!), but as the system doesn't deal with facing, formations, and weapon type differentiations, and the hex scale (525 yards, twice the most optimistic effective range for smoothbore musketry) isn't granular enough to factor in infantry range and tactical flanks, they just cannot be termed tactical games. They just *aren't*. That said, let's get down to Mont St. Jean!!! :)
    You did real well with the Clouseau-like "frenchifying" of terms in the LaBatt milieu: you pronounced the names and places quite creditably, sir!! C'est bon!
    That grey-covered rulebook is a 5th Edition (see the "logo" in the lower center of the cover page). You cover many of the problems associated with the tolerance of multiple rule sets. I am truly amazed at how popular this system remains when it just shoots itself in the foot with the unnecessary confusion caused by having to learn (and distinguish differences between) multiple rule sets. I mean, what happens if you get two players or teams eager to play, but one only likes "Marie Louise" and the other insists on "5th Edition" [or Reglements]??? If you can't solve the impasse, you can't play the game. Just flabbergasts me that the designer(s) don't have a solid viewpoint on their own 40-year old system. Just make a decision already, and stand by it!!!!
    One of the (annoying) subtleties of the counters is, the Prussian units use a "germanic" font style for the increment numbers, where the French use a different font. **Subtly** different, and to my eye, **not different enough** when you've got a tangle of units with dark blue uniforms vying for position on the map. Also with the many "green jacketed" cavalry for the various combatants.
    Still, despite all these seemingly carping comments, this package, and the series as a whole, are still tempting for me. I own two of the games (Quatre Bras [2nd Ed] and Vauchamps, which came in Against the Odds magazine), and often drop in on Eric's playcast streams on Tuesdays to try to get a sense of the flow. Never say never, eh....?

      The DG-esque decision to print "Les Batailles dans L'age L'Empereur Napoleon Ier" on the box of a deluxe second edition was the first thing that caught my eye.

    • @Stiglr
      @Stiglr 2 роки тому

      @@kenx8176 What's that got to do with anything?? DG is not known for slathering French (or anything else) on the covers of their boxes. And the "1er" refers to Napoleon the First, not to the edition of the game.

    • @kenx8176
      @kenx8176 2 роки тому +1

      @@Stiglr It's a comment on the fact that the French is wrong and that they chose not to fix it, even when making a new box cover for the deluxe second edition. What company is notorious for not fixing known errata in the first edition when putting out a new edition? (It took me a while to figure out what you are saying about "1er", because I had not mistaken "1er" as a reference to "first edition.")

    • @Stiglr
      @Stiglr 2 роки тому

      @@kenx8176 More likely, they never even noticed it is incorrect, nor bothered to have it checked by a native speaker. They wouldn't be the first company to do that (can't believe I'm giving DG "an out" on *anything*)! 😄

    There very few, if any, board wargames that convey the visual splendour that the La batt games do. Napoleonic miniatures in cardboard form.

    La Bataille counters look like Ben and Gerry's ice cream shop. Not sure which side I want to play. I think I'll try the less rich Waterloo 1815 Fallen Eagles game from Hexasim, which has two-scoop maps, not four.

    You will find all the games have good intro scenarios. As for the rules seems most use fifth edition or the regs xxx.
    In. Moscowa is Marie Louise rules and marshal is the Premiere rules.
