  • Finding nothing in the cupboard for lunch I made these scones from the Bero Cookbook
    150 g (6oz) SR Flour
    pinch of salt
half a teaspoon of mustard powder
    half a teaspoon of pepper
25g (1 oz) butter - or a tiny bit more
    75g (3 oz) cheese
    1 egg
2tbsp milk, or enough to mix
combine all the dry ingredients, rub in the butter, grate in the cheese, mix to a soft dough with the egg adding a little milk to make everything stick together.
Either roll out to an inch thick and use a cutter, or, as I did, divide into six parts.
Add a bit extra cheese on top, or brush with milk or egg, whatever you like.
Bake 200'C for 10 to 15 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
    Completely delicious!

dont know if your dad did things like this, but I learned to scarify my peas and beans before soaking.I lined a baking powder tin with coarse sandpaper--rough side facing the center of the can --and also the lid. Pop in the seeds give a good long shake, and the seeds get multitudes of tiny cuts that allow in extra moisture.

Those scones look AMAZING. I love cheese scones, going to have to make some now. I have about £100-worth of seeds scattered in my beds, none of which have germinated this year because of our south London drought. I'm basically growing cucurbits and beans. Sigh.

Perma Pen it’s been a weird year, Snow at Easter, heatwave continuing without end ....... I think all the usual growing guides will have to reflect climate change - because I’m sure the seasons are shifting...... gardening can be an expensive business when the conditions don’t favour growth. Hi Kate, I just had to message you to say I think your fabulous, let me explain why -
I’ve only just discovered your UA-cam channel or The UA-cam as you call it lol. Anyway I only just accidentally found your videos 2 days ago and Iv’e watched several already. You are so easy to watch and listen to, always entertaining and i learn something on each video even though they are so varied in content. The other thing is you make me laugh, we can never have too much laughter. Tonight I was watching the 10min scones, my hubby came in to ask what I was laughing about and who was I talking to lol, I was saying to you “you crack me up Kate” lol.
I love the story about the last Homely House and I find when you are very pleased with something, so am I !!! I find myself smiling just like you, eg the Shibori dye day, that was so fun for me here at my home and I didn’t even do anything, this is how you effect people Kate but you have also given me the confidence to have a go at it, I’ve always wanted to, now I will.
Also I agree your son is a wonderful boy, my boy is 34 but will always be “my boy”.
As a matter of interest the first video I watched was the denim one, from jeans to jacket, even in that video where you stop to pat the cat, that would normally be boring video I found myself relaxing as you did with the cat. Thanks so much for what you do Kate, I’m really enjoying your company, how amazing what technology can bring to our lives 🤗

We always have a blast and they learn stuff without realising it! I can’t wait to see your UA-cam channel - tag me here when it’s live. All the lovely people who comment here have at least as much to share as I do if not more! We all live really unique lives, as soon as I realised that I couldn’t care less what I looked like or how people received it it liberated me to have a go and now I’m having the best fun!! So go on You Tube Friend - point that camera at what you are doing and press ‘record’ it’s so very easy!!! 😊❤️🌿

Good morning, Kate! It's morning here too. Ah, a teacher - no wonder you have such confidence. If you're a buffoon I'm a flowerpot. No, not really it was just the first word that popped into my head. Not sure what I am but maybe if I film myself it will become apparent! One thing I've noticed lately is that when I hear my recorded voice I absolutely cringe and yes I am going to be so self conscious about that voice, etc. Not much I can do to change it at this point unless I take some elocution lessons. Well perhaps we'll all have a good laugh. I'm a quilter (not lately), I take violin lessons, I have painted in watercolor, oil and acrylic, made ceramics and also worked as a ceramic painter, oh let me just stop there. I've tried just about everything but spinning and knitting. Oh and I've never had chickens. Well, can't spill all the beans now, must save up for my first "film" preview. The whole time I will be thinking about how you do it; you're my youtube goodwill ambassador. The name of my channel will be JauntyAirstream. Let's just leave that there, as a mystery for now.

Have you thought about mulching your carrots and over-wintering them? We did that one year when it was really dry and they weren't growing well. We had beautiful fat carrots (Danvers half-longs) the next spring when we dug them and have done that with carrots ever since.

J judy I’m new to growing carrots .... or anything for that matter .... I didn’t plant enough. I won’t have enough to clamp, but next year ....... I’ve grown a heritage variety, purple and white .... won’t bother with them again, turns out I like orange carrots 🤔😊❤️🌿

Thank you for sharing your cooking. I am trying to eat more healthy and seeing how others cook and what they cook is very helpful. And, I just love your kitchen, the colors just make me happy. Just lovely. I have a difficult time with spinach in my garden as well. Have a lovely evening! Catherine

spinach isn't worth the effort I don't think - even the stuff they sell as spinach is leaf beet - so that is what I grow - and rainbow chard which is also very delicious. My kitchen makes me happy too - I just love colour and can't get enough of it! Ive just posted a courgette (zucchini) supper which is far healthier than these scones! And who doesn't have one of those little green things grow huge!! Thank you for following along! xxx

Hi again. I notice you had your cheese stored in the store wrapper. I now wrap mine in my bees wax sheets and it is staying fresh much longer. Just wanted to share that with you. Lovingly watch your old videos👍🏻😊

Thanks Carol - yes - the cheese was in the pack - I generally buy small quantities and eat it quite quickly - but I would like to make some beeswax covers - this year maybe if I harvest some honey xxxx

Excellent!! Love your reaction when the flour overshot the bowl and again when the bit of dough went flying to the floor. Priceless!! Rofl. I’ve never put an egg in biscuits or scones before but will give this a try. With the mustard and cheese, I’ll bit a whiff of garlic would be yummy! I’ll try it.
Have a lovely day, Kate. You have just made mine - I laughed n laughed. So fun. Hugs ❤️

the coriander (cilantro in western US) is a FABULOUS pollinator insect feeder. Many of the teeny tiny encarsia wasps which control aphids and soft bodied insects (by grisly, grisly means) FEED themselves on the pollen and nectar from Parsley, Cilantro, Dill, Carrot. etc. I let them go to seed just to feed pollinators, lol.

Hello from Vermont in New England USA! I started watching your video about string piecing with your Juki and saw this one. Had to skip over here and say how much your green and purple in your kitchen impressed me. I'm a little jealous, it's just what I've wanted!
