If you need to change humanity to fit your idea of liberation, then maybe your idea of liberation is what's incorrect.

Marcuse's idea of liberation is entirely consistent with his idea of humanity. It is what we are liberated *from* which is fundamentally inhuman. He specifically talks about "human nature as an object of domination," that is, how human nature is dominated by contemporary society. He does not say that human nature needs to change, rather he discusses how human nature is hijacked via the methods of advanced industrial society. He advocates for a truly human and humane society, made of authentically free and equal persons, able to pursue their idea of the good life both individually and collectively.
Marcuse says, "what is at stake is the uncovering of the roots of liberation in the mind and in the body of man. Or in other words, a free society presupposes not only new institutions and new relationships of production, not only a break with the dominant rationality that has built these institutions and relations, but also with the basic experience of the world, a break with the familiar sense certainty we have acquired, a break with the manipulated needs and satisfaction to which we have become accustomed." This is not "changing humanity," but rather liberating humanity from what already oppresses and exploits it, thereby creating an authentically human and humane society.

If you think that Western Capitalist Cultures dont work tirelessly on social engineering as well, you are truly ignorant. Marxist-Leninist's want their citizens to behave and think in certain ways. So do Capitalist's. They both want to repress human nature for their own political ends. Neither should be tolerated.

At the level of the body's senses, the world is indeed the very expression of inequality. Some stars in space far exceed the size and intensity of another; the brighter ones seemingly competing... for the attention of one's gaze. But ontologically, this level -- physical reality -- is no matter; that's why the constitution declares in the first that all men are created equal by God. In other words, things are "equal" only in heaven, and never in the world. One must also account for life itself and reincarnation, as does Plato in the final book of his Republic. Doing the very best one possibly can in one's life and harming no one leads to greater opportunity to express freedom in the next. A person born "white" can be "black" the next, if chosen. A poor worker can become rich in the next. Equality extends beyond a single lifetime. Responsibility for one's circumstances is the most fundamental thing. This is what the Right says, as well. Understanding that ALL expressions of Love are maximal. Bc the key is the non-physical world. Don't take a place already empty and void (the world) and carve out deeper holes. Such a philosophy is the work of an evil, or service-to-self, one. Life is tricky bc our feelings and most sincere beliefs may be -- in truth -- wrong. One may think they are helping others positively, but are actually binding their hands. This is how the asteroid belt was formed, when those living on Maldek obliterated their home sphere. The saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" is apt I feel with Marcuse.

It appears this comments section has been invaded by Fraulein Peterson's gulag-gangers. I sure wish those assholes would maybe go rewatch the Žižek v. Peterson spectacle and remind themselves that their Daddy Bootstraps Denkenführer is no Tolstoi, to say the least. But whoever said that Frau Peterson is the public intellectual that a settler-occupation like Canada or US-America deserves right now may have had a point...though I couldn't bring myself to wish a JP on my worst intellectual enemy.
If you can't write a compelling novel, philosophical work, or direct a good horror film, etc. then please stop calling yourself a psychologist. Petersonian soft-fascist self-help-guruism is just depressing. Death to camp capitalism and its self-celebrating, bullying, occasionally faux-modest, genocidal mediocrity.

@@lewislee9201 "equal outcomes" is a piece of right wing rhetoric. Marcuse never discusses anything in those terms.
What Marcuse critiques how advanced industrial society creates a smooth, democratic unfreedom. He analyzes how our instincts and emotions are manipulated by mass society, and he discusses what it would mean to have an authentically free society, where we are not manipulated by the institutions but are in control of them, and run them to our own collective benefit. He never says anything about "equality of outcomes," which is a construct that comes from the political right.

Labelling things “right wing rhetoric” rather than presenting an argument is simply ad hominem, and you seem to have the education to realise it. As such, I think you haven’t respected your interlocutor there.
Not respecting people because they have ideas that differ from your own is, in my view, dumb as fuck.

Marcuse is brilliant. He identifies the problems of the society, the ideologies that help to maintain it, and he invites his listeners and readers to engage in critical thought with him. The political right has never forgiven him for that, because it cuts through their nonsense about "nature." Hence all the hatred against Marcuse and all the blame on this foreign-born Jewish intellectual for corrupting American culture with political correctness and identity politics.

@@stevenyourke7901 Just stop. The mistake isn't conflating communist parties with Marx, but Western pseudo-Marxists (liberals with social democratic leanings) promoting a Western propagandistic worldview where any country that doesn't allow capitalist control over media and elections is a "dictatorship", and upholds the lies of the Western press against countries like China, countries which have infinitely more democracy (not to mention a better standard of living) than they ever had under the control of the West. Your ideas (which are typical in the West and equates to selling out in order to be more mainstream acceptable) always lead to the exact place they went to in these UA-cam comments: "Oh you want to try something that's never been tried, how very pie in the sky of you". Way to go, turning Marxism from scientific socialism into idealistic dreaming. Meanwhile socialism has been tried and been successful multiple times and has brought more people out of poverty in record time than any system in the world. Socialism doesn't need apologies or excuses; it only needs defense from the lies of the Western press. You need to read Lenin, badly, and you need to study the history of socialist nations from sources that aren't simply mouthpieces for the West/capitalism.
