    Last year was my first year with a cut flower garden. I had some failures and some success. One big success was Lemon Basil and Cinnamon Basil. I grew them for fillers, they produced so well, and I had so many at the end of the season I took bouquets of them to work. One scent in the office and one in the break room. Th e girls loved them so much many asked me to grow some for them for their own landscapes.

    The cleome from proven winners will absolutely get huge in one season and because it’s sterile the flower production is very vigorous.

    Your garden will be beautiful! Interesting about dill attracting flies. I've tried growing dill many times and have failed, so I won't try again. I can't remember if you have said this or not, but do you have plans to build a greenhouse? You certainly have the space for one. Thank you!

    Love your color palette! The dahlias & zinnias look breathtaking❤. Did you know that Nigella is a cool season flower? It can be direct sown outside right now, as well as the Bupluerum. You will be surprised how much of a head start it can be!!!

    Didn't know about dill attracting flies, so thanks for that fact.
    Can't wait to see the Floret zinnias grow.
    Appleblossom snapdragons are very fresh looking and go well in a bouquet.
    How exciting!!!
    Even though marigolds are not good cut flowers, they help reduce pests like aphids.
    It might be worth planting a few at the edge of your cut flower garden.
    Also lavender is best placed on the outer edge to do the same and attract pollinators, if you are keen on collecting seed pods at the end of the growing season.( as I tend to do).
    Just from my own experience, Cleomes take up alot of room and have spikes up the stems.
    I stopped growing these as they're not a friendly flower and take up way too much space.
    Lupins are a very statuesque flower and also add nitrogen to your soil. It might be worth growing a variety in a place they can stay, as they come up every year.
    Quite delightful to see....even if you plant around your house instead.
    They never let me down.
    😊 Happy springtime, Jo.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  6 місяців тому +1

      Lupins don’t return here. I’ve grown them before at the old garden and they just lasted a season. I believe it’s our clay soil.
      The PW cleomes don’t regularly have thorns, which is why I selected them. We will see how these perform this year!

      Proven winners are hard to get here in NZ. You have a great variety to chose from. I do like your interesting textures and colour palette. The opposing colour wheel makes for contrasting colours like lime and purple, zinnias and stock or phlox. Can't wait to see what does well in your cut garden.

  • @aalejardin

    Zaharas don't have particularly long stems but they are super healthy and floriferous. I have given up on many other zinnias due to powdery mildew -- I love zinnias so this makes me sad, but I'm not going to spray them. I grow Zaharas, Profusion and some species (angustifolia and haageana). Cleome can get huge and re-seed like crazy, but very reliable bloomers. I have a bed where I planted a couple of cleomes several years ago and the seedlings have popped up every year. I am looking forward to seeing how your garden develops this year--you are going to have so much fun!

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden

  • @heathersgardenpeace
    @heathersgardenpeace 6 місяців тому +1

    I just heard you mention the Zahara series zinnias for your cut flower garden, but those are shorter bedding varieties as far as I know. They usually only get 12-18"tall and are a very mounted habit with short stems.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  6 місяців тому +1

      I know. They will still work for smaller mason jar size arrangements for me. I mainly got them because I didn’t have to start them from seed and were available.

      @@TheSouthernersNorthernGardenI've grown them a few years and really love them. They're such great producers, especially in heat and humidity. I'm just down in Kentucky.
      I may have to try cutting some for shorter bouquets this year. Thank you!

    Zahara zinnias are short bedding plants, not the tall ones for cutting. May be too short to use as a cut.

    Matthew I have a question, have you ever grown PW Geranium? I ordered a few on their website but it didn’t say how to care for them! Your gardens are gorgeous .

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  6 місяців тому +1

      I have not and I’ve never seen any locally. I doubt the care would vary from a regular geranium, so they should be pretty trouble free.

    Are you building raised beds or using metal ones again?
    Also, do you think you'll have a problem with agricultural herbicide overspray? I sadly had my first ever rose killed from neighboring farms. I'm itching to try again, even put up with beetles, but oversprays worry me.

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  6 місяців тому +1

      I will probably use metal ones again, but they are likely not in the budget for the vegetable garden this year. I'll have to finish other projects first. I'm not concerned about overspray as the farmer would be responsible for any damages.

    • @shirleyvastine9328
      @shirleyvastine9328 6 місяців тому

      The overspray, from what I understand from my farmer neighbor, who does not spray, the chemicals go up in the air and somehow travel at night, and fall, so I have no idea where it could come from.
      This stuff should be banned!!!
      I'm so excited to see your new garden inspirations!!

    Hi, Matthew. Love your channel! Last summer, I had several phlox planted in my front flower bed and they just came in full bloom and were gorgeous ! I went out to view them the next day and they deer had eaten the blooms off every single one of them! I was so heartbroken! I plan to dig them up this year and mover them to my flowerbed in my fenced in backyard.

    You must be blessed not to have Japanese beetles, they ruin my two beautiful roses and my black raspberries and grape vines. So though I love the roses you show, I can't add any more.

      I don’t know how bad your beetle situation is but around my roses I planted rue with very good effect. I have also had beetle damage but the beetles hate rue and it’s been very hardy for me. Where I planted it I had no more beetle damage. Hoping for the same benefits this year.
