I know this sound very well too. And Peter Gabriel does a very good cover of it.

The song The Kinks are probably most known for is "Lola," and it's great, but I prefer listening to some of their more obscure songs, like "Dead End Street," "Harry Rag," "Days," "Death of a Clown," or even "I'm in Disgrace."

While this song is more along the lines of The Beatles and even a dash of Beach Boys, The Kinks had some more raw, harder-edged songs and were very influential for both hard rock and punk bands.

Experienced various recordings of "The Kinks" that are copious compilation records from the decades. There are only a couple of collections that even attempts to cover the entire recording catalogue of The Kinks, the first is the 2-CD, 44-track compilation titled "The Ultimate Collection" (TUC). The most essential tracks from 1964-1967 (covering the first 5 records and singles from this period, with 27 of the 44 tracks taken from this period. The collection is somewhat less successful in compiling the next few years (1968-1972), with a total of only 11 tracks coming from those years (including singles) and only 6 from their next 4 records (Which are some of their best records, but only 1 track each from "Village Green Preservation Society And Arthur", and 2 tracks each from "Lola" and "Muswell Hillbillies"). Only 6 tracks are included from 1973-1984 (including none from the 6 records between 1973-1978, a period which covers two of The Kink’s best records, "Sleepwalker" and "Misfits"), one from "Low Budget" (1979), and the rest (5) from the early 80's records (Give The People, State of Confusion, and Word of Mouth). Thus, this collection is lightweight for the early period. Note: this compilation is missing a hefty 38 tracks from 60 Kinks tracks: The BBC Sessions: (1964-1977) -
The Kinks At The BBC - The Kinks At The Rainbow (1972).

One of the best songs of the 60s and still sounds as good now as it did then.

Ray is the Cynic; Dave is the Optimist; Pete was the Realist; Mick is the Apathetic 😊
Ray Davies.. the greatest songwriter of his generation! The Kinks placed alongside The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who as the British Invasion's Big Four. "Waterloo Sunset" is the one example most people would be familiar with. "Waterloo Sunset", in which the narrator reflects upon a couple while watching the Thames and Waterloo station, also relates to Festival of Britain 1951. Ordinary people and working-class situations feature in a lot of songs, and are the only aspect of British life to have escaped Ray's barbed wit. The Kinks have a reputation for writing some great comedy rock songs: "Apeman", "David Watts", "Harry Rag", "Skin & Bone". Dave sang almost every song he wrote as well as a few of the early covers and several of Ray's songs ("Wicked Annabella", "Sleepless Night", "Bernadette"); bassist John Dalton has the only lead vocal not by one of the Davies brothers, doing an Elvis impersonation on the Ray-written track "Willesden Green" from Percy (it's also on The Kink Kronikles). Many of their best albums - The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire), Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One, Muswell Hillbillies. Each album had a specific theme pertaining to Nostalgia Filter, the end of the Good Old Ways, the rise of Stepford Suburbia and the conspicuous consumption surrounding contemporary life, of which the music industry is a part of. Paradoxically, this made The Kinks an influence on the Punk era (Johnny Rotten called them his favourite band) because they were among the few to sing about what was really happening between The '60s and The '70s under the surface of the Hippie Era. They later became interested in Rock Opera with Everybody's in Show-Biz, Preservation (Act One and Two), A Soap Opera and Schoolboys in Disgrace. 🇬🇧

Ray Davies was effectively a modern day folk singer, writing about the world around him. Terry and Julie were his friends, the actors Terence Stamp and Julie Christie.

everybody knows about the Beatles or the Stones but the Kinks were also a very big band in the '60s/'70s - you probably know their hits without knowing it's actually them !!! - suggestions : "you really got me" ; "all day and all of the night" ; "sunny afternoon" and "Lola" (great lyrics on this one ) !!!!

Top 40 radio in the 50's & 60's insisted on short singles so they could claim they play more songs per hour than their rival local station. Their first US hit "You Really Got Me" was ground breaking and influences many many bands.

A poor remastering where the chorus is way too low. I think though, there is a slightly longer fade than on the original release.

Great song but the remix sounds awful. There's hardly any bass and the vocals are too prominent is the right channel. Listen to the original and you'll prefer it.
