Don Freeman here. This show was 1970 and I was a young keyboardist playing gigs in Philadelphia and New York. In 1974 I started playing with Sister Sledge and we went and performed at the Tokyo Music Festival in the summer of 1975, Astrud Gilberto was also performing at this event. She sounded incredible plus they had a 50 piece orchestra to accompany her. We met and hung out and she told me she lived in Philadelphia so we exchanged numbers and she had me over for dinner a few times then asked if I’d like to be her musical director/ keyboardist for a 3 week tour of Japan. So I put a band together and we went toured Japan in January of 1976 for 3 weeks. We had a great time and she sounded phenomenal as always aside from some initial nervousness which we all get but we also had lots of laughter and humor all the time. After that tour I moved permanently to Los Angeles and wrote songs for many artists and played on their records etc. I came back to Philly from London around 2003 and was able to connect with Astrud at her apartment in Philadelphia which was fantastic. Obrigado Astrud❤❤❤
Hey don , yes she was something !! ...I'm sure you have great memories of her , me being from Philly too , would always hope to bump into her , I knew she lived in a condo overlooking the Delaware river ! ...I was told she was a little withdrawn due to her shyness . But she seemed so down to earth and approachable. I had heard about her dying as I was working in center city , and on my way home (on the L- train ) I remember thinking about her when the train passed the spring garden stop , and those high rise condo's overlooking the river . I thought about her all the way home ..lol. I loved that voice ! ...r.i.p. Ms. Gilberto .
That’s an amazing anecdote…..her hazel eyes were to melt for…I have so many of her lps….listening to them in that era so often on rainy Sunday afternoons in England on my radiogram..
Here is more complete information. First Astrud sings "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), followed by a a bit of "Samba de uma Nota Só" (One Note Samba), then "Manhã de Carnaval" (Carnival Morning - theme from Orfeu Negro / Black Orpheus), then "Agua de Beber" (Water to Drink), then back to "The Girl from Ipanema" in English/"Garota de Ipanema" in Portuguese. Great voice and interpretation!
Very talented and naturally beautiful. I listen to Brazilian music and singers from long ago. RIP Astrud and Jobim you entertained us and we loved you for it.
I can remember hearing this song when I was 4 years old in 1964 and enjoying the scent of my uncle’s girlfriends White Shoulders Perfume. It did something to me back then that I couldn’t explain.
Love it...Cudahy....that smell, the scent...it never leaves us...In '64, I was 8...and fondly remember my mom playing this on our Hi-fi stereo ~ ....man, where'd the time go ...geez ~
The song was released in 1964 and actually written in 1962. Won a Grammy in '65. Ed Sullivan was about 5 years late on this one, but at least we got a nice color version.😎
@Wow, I love slow music. it's a shame without her, and Carmen Miranda Brazilian music would've gotten the exposure it deserved. Her Carmen and Elis were white, but they gave a platform to the Afrobrazilian cultures as well . Songs like Roda for Elis . The way Carmen Miranda the way she dressed was clearly Afro derived . And Astrud with Berimbau and take me to Aruanda .
I realized very early that most Brazilian musicians considered Astrud with kinda disdain. Maybe it's because of her European origins or her affair with Stan Getz. Don't really know... But she was the spacecraft that propulsed Bossa Nova to reach its worldwide audience. She was the right person at the right time in the right place... R. I. P. Astrud...!
If you didn’t know. Bossa nova means : the new thing! It is still exciting 60 years later. In the 1960’s it seemed that every performer had a bossa nova album.
While in the Army and stationed in Japan in 1969 I saw her perform at the NCO club there in Tokyo. Even got her autograph & she mentioned to me I looked like Paul McCartney. That was a long time ago but I'll never forget.

Can you imagine what record producers and audio engineers would do to her voice today? They ruin everything now with pitch correction.
Very cool story, thanks for sharing. Sorry for your loss, she was incredible.

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes Each one she passes goes, ah
When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes Each one she passes goes, ah
Oh, but he watches so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him
Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes He smiles, but she doesn't see
Oh, but he sees her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him
Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes he smiles, but she doesn't see
She just doesn't see, no she just doesn't see
But she doesn't see, she doesn't see, no she just doesn't see
Thank you!! 🆒
I always thought it was the grammatically incorrect "she looks straight ahead not at HE" cuz, y'know... it rhymes with sea
