I wore your flight cap to the hospital when my daughter was born in October. I love wearing it, and it'll remind me of her each time I do. Thanks for your hard work!
I tried merino wool t-shirts and I like them, but my choice is Western Rise X-Cotton t-shirt. It dries really quickly, doesn't wrinkle and doesn't smell. In terms of odor, these t-shirts work even better than merino for me. Also, for some reason, people never talk about static electricity with merino. Maybe it's just me, but in somewhat dry climates it's a nightmare. And merino is much higher maintenance and expensive.
It kinda depends on the brand you buy and the fabric they use. I had a few 100% merino shirts, and while they're super soft and comfy, they're pretty fragile. On the other hand, I have a few tees from Ridge that are a merino and nylon blend that have held up very well. I also have some stuff from Wool & Prince that, while expensive, are also made of blends and have help up really well.
@@Sarius- I have merino t-shirts from Unbound Merino, Outlier, Wester Rise and Proof. I love them, but not for travelling. I may take just one of them. Boxer briefs from 100% merino are a game changer, though. Never going back to cotton ones. I use boxers from Woolly.
I agree on the boxers lmao. Can't go back to cotton after that. I bought my other merino stuff specifically for travel for reasons similar to Maurice, but that quickly turned into me wearing them every day because I find them more comfortable. I know what you mean by higher maintenance, though. Much more difficult to care for while you're on the road, whereas you can throw normal stuff in any laundromat.
Just traveled to Japan during a surprisingly late in the year heat wave, and picked up a light cap from Uniqlo that is now my go to hat back at home because of how easy it is to wear and wash.
After living/traveling in southeast Asia for a time, I found that a neutral color non-cotton sarong was a must have. Covers bare shoulders indoors when air conditioning is blasting, a light blanket on a flight or napping in the airport, etc.. I now have a slightly thicker one (actually a large scarf) that I use when traveling in cooler areas of the world.
Absolutely love your enthusiasm in your videos and how thorough you are with your edc and everything you travel with. I’m excited to try packing very light in the future when the opportunity for travel comes. I definitely plan to just use what I have for now but love seeing your thought process and how thoughtful you are with your choices
Like your videos and they’re pretty helpful. I’m both a senior and very active so I have some other choices I’ve made from head to toe: Gill Regatta Cap, a merino buff, merino crew T (icebreaker), Uniqlo airism briefs, under armour men’s vanish slacks, merino socks, merrell leather shoes (discontinued). I pack light swim trunks and merino hoodless sweater and a down jacket for variable weather. All in less than 6 lbs. I need help finding a dressy shoe I can hike in.
Carry on also avoids luggage loss. If wearing a suit and/or dress shoes, wear your heavy garments/shoes on the plane to lighten your carry on weight limit. Know the dress code where you go, in Europe baseball hats mark you as an American even though you will often see baseball caps there with "I [heart] Paris" etc. at tourist shops.
Last time I went traveling I was in warm weather and I brought all of my merino shirts with me 4 my bag was super light and it was so easy. I did bring a few extra pieces of clothing and still had plenty of room. Merino is the way to go.
Great video and being in the travel industry some great tips. I used icebreaker for quite a while and they lasted well. Apart from silverfish loving them or a cloth eating bug loving them when I lived in Australia. Thanks for the tips and like the Nike shoes.
I beg to differ with you about how unbound traps odors. As a menopausal woman, I sweat a lot and if I air the shirt , at times can wear two days. My tip- I use Pacifica deodorant for a great smell
Uniqlo is my brand of choice for most of my travels for over a decade. Bought one Unbound Merino shirt to try it out and while I do love its anti-microbial feature, I don’t travel enough to justify its price tag. I’ll want to get a similar backpack next time.
My favourite travel pants are the Eddie Bauer Guide Pro pants. For my longer trips I’ll do 1 regular pair and one convertible pair. The 2 way stretch makes them super comfy, plus they have a low profile cargo pockets and a host of other features which make them great for flights, hiking and slightly dressy outings. Just wish the logo wasn’t so obnoxious.
We rock almost the same kit with the exception of I have gone full merino on 🧦 socks from Darn Tough and Undbound Merino and boxers from Unbound Merino. At 6’ 250 this has cut my luggage weight by 12-15lbs. Sadly Uniqlo and UBM pants don’t fit me but Patagonia Travel pants are perfect. Love this series. Keep em coming. mahalo 🤙🏽
Great video! I really enjoy your videos, because your sharing things you have actually used & give honest feedback on them. I have only traveled with additional check in baggage once in the last 30+ years. I really like knowing that all my stuff is with me, and I LOVE that all I have to do is leave the plane. Your tips & tricks make this even easier. Thanks so much! 👍🏻
Great video, however, I feel like it is missing cold weather options, which is very often a reality of travel. How would these outfits change in the case of traveling to/from a cold weather destination?
Definitely invest in wool socks too. Smart Wool is king 👑💖 I recently got a braided elastic clothes line from Rick Steves website and while it's a little bulky it is extremely helpful for drying clothes or even making a privacy curtain in a hostel bunk
My experience is that when I wear polyester clothing (Airism, Vuori etc.), these start to smell after some hours (although they're labeled "Anti Odor"). On the other hand, I have no problem wearing a 100% cotton OCBD two days in a row. I agree with your advice to go with merino, though. Plastic just doesn't work for me :( While I also have some plastic trousers from Seagale, I always come back to Denim because nothing compares to the drape of it.
Personally, I think that a compact umbrella is better for most travelers than a rain shell. It keeps more of you dry, it's actually waterproof rather than just water resistant, it's easily stowed, and it's way less expensive.
After 18 months of continuous travel, I no longer carry a rain jacket. In general, I find that a compact umbrella is far better option for urban environment / light to medium rain. For tropical downpours, I carry a compact poncho just in case. Between them, only a little more weight and volume than a rain jacket but much more effective.
@@gotUpdated Oh, Manila. Of course NAIA would be where they'd freak out about it, lol. That place exemplifies the term "security theater" even more than TSA does
When you are considering merino clothing, check the usual shops rather than the (overpriced) outdoor and specialty shops. You'll find 100% merino at half the price and even less when on sale at places such as GAP, Banana Republic, JCrew, and H&M. They'll even come in styles that you can wear as an adult, such as button shirts and sweaters/cardigans/hoodies. The exception is those thin merino wool/nylon t-shirts, which really should not cost more than ~$40, so buy them on sale only.
Shoes are my biggest problem, I need to bring an extra pair. Anyway I recommend Vessi made in British Columbia. Lots of great styles. They also have lots of other water proof gear. Cheers
I got some merino wool shirts for travel and was SHOCKED when I left my shirt lying flat in the bathroom after smoking a joint outside - which I do occasionally but hate the stagnant, lingering smell. In the morning, no smoke or skunk smell. I was shocked enough I had my wife smell it to make sure I wasn't just nose blind. Crazy.
Thanks for another great vid. I have the original 33l Pakt backpack and love the way it packs and is organized. I thought about upgrading to the newer 35l, but not surenit is enough of an upgrade to justify over spending that money on another travel backpack in favor of variety.
Maurice hi! I see you’re showing the Merino travel pants from Unbound Merino. I haven’t found a proper review online about them, can you tell us your thoughts on them? Do you really recommend them for travel? Are they really durable? Merino wool is great but more fragile, so while it sounds like a great idea for tees, hoodies or underwear, I’m wondering if for pants it wouldn’t get damaged too fast (sitting, frictions etc…). Would like some honest review! Thank you!

Thanks for another great video, Maurice. I'm curious how much your bag ends up weighing after it's fully packed. I'm always afraid of straining the back.
Wearing something for a week because it doesn't smell, sounds awful. Just because it doesn't smell doesn't mean it's clean. Urgh, I bought a Uniglo Denim jacket because it's light and has big inner pockets, big enough to take an iPad, which with Air Asia being very strict on it's 7kg carry on limit is a great help. I can load them pockets!

But merino shirts require special washing detergent. I love love love merino, but the delicate nature of the wool makes it much harder to to care for when doing laundry during the trip
My unbound merino pants split in an odd place after 25-30 wears of one to two days. They don’t seem to be very high quality. I won’t buy again, they are too expensive to be anything but excellent quality.
Loved the video, but I was surprised by the mention of avoiding cotton due to odors while suggesting polyester based clothing in the budget picks section. I understand why Uniqlo was chosen but there’s multiple studies showing polyester clothing performs significantly worse compared to cotton in terms of odor.
I'm still not really sold on this Unbound Merino, It feels like a scam it cost so much for just a shirt or pants. It feels like a novelty Item for it's price alone. I understand it's Pros. I just don't see how average consumer like me would jump into it because of it's price.
