How to: BMW E39 5 Series Center Console Storage Compartment Replacement

- How to replace the BMW E39 5 series center console storage compartment. Unfortunately over time these accordion doors will eventually break due to age and the plastic fatiguing. BMW does not sell a replacement door and I haven’t seen an aftermarket option either, so you’ll have to buy a whole new assembly. It wasn’t overly expensive, but the broken door really bothers me. This particular car I am working with is a 1997 BMW 540i. You might be able to apply some plastic filler to the door tracks on the one with a broken door and finish up with a plastic paint which matches the interior finish. Then you wouldn’t have to worry about the door failing again. #BMW #BMW5series #BMWe39

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-new storage compartment (#51168159698)
Procedure:
-there is clips on both sides, here is the notches for the clips on the one side
-and then on the opposite side
-so these are at the front and back of the compartment
-no tools are needed for this replacement procedure
-simply grab onto the sides, you can grip onto the sides where the accordion door slides in the slot
-pull up with your fingers and push down with your thumbs so you do not strain the surrounding trim and risk cracking it
-once it pops up, you can now fully remove it
-in order to install the new replacement compartment, ensure it’s aligned with the hold
-it may clip up on the edge, so you can pull it from side to side to help it seat correctly
-snap it into place and you’re done

The According Door can be 3D printed, and it works very well. I just installed mine. I also found the according door online for around $45 someplace.
Can you replace the tray on the armrest without removing to whole thing?

I have a question. 2003 Ford Explorer XLS. AC cold, no heat due to Blend Door Actuator. Turn knob to heat and all you hear is clicking. Replaced a few minutes ago and heat is working fine but when I turn back to AC, it's still hot. I'm been dealing with this for hours and I'm tired lol. Please help me ! Anything would be greatly appreciated.
You maybe looking at a faulty blend door, I've heard it's common on the newer generation F150s too. You could try some silicone spray on the pivots for the blend door, perhaps it's only sticking and not broken. Last I heard Ford discontinued the replacement part (hopefully I'm wrong and that isn't the case).
My e39 has a flip up cupholder in this exact spot. And my cover or door to it is gone. It's my only interior piece thats missing or damaged and id really like to fix it but have yet to even find anything like what i have. Any recommendations?

Thanks for all of your videos, you've kept my 2002 530i Sport Touring going much longer than I expected. I need to replace the coin storage compartment exactly like the one in this video...when I pull like you described it doesn't budge. Before applying too much pressure I thought I'd just double check whether this is the same procedure for ALL e39s? Any advice would be appreciated

Can't pull it out. Mine is not broken but there is I think an old, useless to me, charging cable, probably spliced in under there somewhere. Any more information how to pull at it? Feels like I will break it if I try harder.
Try pulling it at a different angle. Or if you're worried about breaking it, you can pull up the whole trim piece to view it from the backside.
Would it be possible to install a car phone center console, in an 01 525i that came without the option.

Did you install the armrest phone aswell or was it factory installed?
Nope, it was a factory installed option. It was an analog phone, so it doesn't work on modern networks, just a conversation piece basically.
4DIYers oh okay, I’m about to purchase an E39 and I was wondering if it was possible to install one into me armrest console. If the car came without the option. I know it won’t work but I just love how it looks and the old school vibe
Yes you can install one, you'll need to run the wiring and module for it. These are aren't pre-wired. Mine also had a hands-free device on the steering wheel, so you'll need the button for that and wiring too.
4DIYers crazy enough I noticed mine has the steering controls aswell and I looked in the trunk and it had the “the bmw cellular phone” patch at the back so I’m hoping it has the wires already but just didn’t come with phone center console option, I just ordered the whole center console with phone, I know it won’t be able to work but hopefully it’ll at least light up lol
