Australia does have access to the same radios as the rest of the world. I have a few dozen of them, been collecting for years. Anything is available in Australia.

I live in Auckland NZ and bought the 1945 radio you have on display from our JayCar store.First thing I did with it was change the dial knob and gave it one off an old disused National RF 49 " Black beast" SSB receiver. I bought this mostly for road trips in my Camper where receiption would be far better out in country areas because electrical interferance is bad in the city areas & SW/SSB receiption is almost nil.Im a DXer and short wave & SSB are my two main listening areas.I find the SSB on the 1945 is okay so long as you turn the dial very slowly once you have an offical frequency at the lowest tuning step.Be sure the frequency is either LSB or USB and turn accordingly. This radio is not a top of the line receiver but for listening in the outback, country areas far away from any interferance, you can certainly pull in really good receiption on all bands.Really recomend it as a spare portable receiver ideal for going bush or tramping and camping.Thanks. James.NZ.

Yes, the performance of the radio is quite good for a portable unit. Very sensitive and selective. I'm wondering if there's an electro soldered in backwards in the ssb circuit. It's variable, sometimes ssb resolution is very good, other times, non existent despite how you manipulate the controls. I'm hoping someone with excellent technical skills can open up the radio and investigate the issue.
      Enjoy the radio, HNY.

I got a AR-1748 for Christmas. Took it back to the store on Boxing Day as both the AM/FM and MW/SW dials were wobbly and out of alignment. Also, it was stuck on one band - SW-1.
The replacement: AM fine, FM okay, SW ...well, the whole reason I wanted the radio was more for its SW function over anything else. And so far the SW function hasn't lived up to it's promise. And I have gone by the manual (the one I had to go back to the store for because there wasn't one in the box) but still it hasn't lived up to expectations.
My gut feeling is I'll be taking this one back to the store too but shopping elsewhere for SW radio #3

Hi Piet, while they have tecsun attributes, they are made by Redsun Radio in China

He didnt cover the other functions of these radios,on the back there is 2 external antenna inputs for coaxial cable f-type fittings,if you want this radio to really preform on shortwave get a dipole aerial or a grounded long wire aerial like i did with mine. Im picking up channels in America, china, russia and very clear. RFI is a problem with these radios, but if you use the external antenna for shortwave and set it up properly these preform as good as any other expensive world band radios. He also didnt cover the switches on one side of the radio, and the speaker line in/out jack ports and headphones input port on the other side. The switches on the side are for selecting internal or external antenna and dx or local for distance and close stations.

I found an AR1748 at a local op shop last year for all of $20. It’s a good performer as you say, but there’s some electronic noises when changing bands and noises when tuning. I often listen to Gold 1071 Bendigo from my house 50km W of Melbourne. RNZI is also a favourite of mine, usually tuned on the FRG-7. I need to find a circlip to make the tuning knob a tighter fit, it falls off easily.

Yes can be a bit sketchy, I think thats why that model isn't available anymore, only the model without the keypad is available.
Can you fix it? They do perform quite well bar ssb.

Yes, plenty of shortwave stations still. Best is Radio New Zealand Int; for schedules, see their website.

@@philireland1678 i saw on the there is ar 1946 model with additional dab ability. But damn nowhere to find, the last item were on ebay which is sold for 200 something. I wonder how much for the new one. AR 1946 more modern.
I feel so damn old when talking about radio 😅😅😅. Every body happy with iphone, itunes and mp3. But the joy and feeling never replaceable, nowadays kids never understand 😎😎😎

I have the AR1946 but it has been removed from the Jaycar catalogues for some reason. Perhaps it didn't sell well enough to stock it. A good performer but lacking ssb unfortunately
