CAMARO DIFFERENTIAL IN MY BMW E46?- LS3 SWAP

- In today's video I focus on the rear suspension. I am doing a LS3 swap into my 2001 BMW E46. I want to use the differential that came with the engine however will it be possible? If this fails I will have to use the LSD from a M3 E46.

Update: I am using the M3 Diff.
I so need me a wife like Selena! Who all agrees lets get a thumbs up!!
Smart move.
Good choice Selena.
dave I'm agreeing because I also need one!
BMWselena
what was the reason for the decision?
I thing to take M3 diff is pretty much no brainer. Since taking that LS diff will require subframe modification, axles modification, and possibly driveshaft itself since it's longer then stock e46. With M3 diff basically you need just driveshaft modification since its easiest in my opinion.
p.s. that ls diff looks super heavy :X
Adomas Ž. yeah but the m3 diff will be a different ratio. would be nice to have the drivetrain all designed for that engine
Driveshaft has to be changed anyway. The Camaro diff is stronger and has different ratios readily available
I'd be a bit leery of cutting up the diff center section, it could really compromise the strength you'll need when you build up the LS. Better to clearance the IFS cage and weld in metal to make up for it there.
seeing all the different nuts and bolts and parts makes me anxious lol
You guys are the best! I'm planning to get an e46 m3 :D keep up the good work!
Looking forward to seeing how you work out the electronics.
Nice video in your series of a very interesting build. Why do you prefer the Camaro diff over an BMW M series diff ? I can imagine that the necessary cutting and welding to align the bolts with the BMW subframe will make your Camaro diff weaker as they'll have to endure the full load of torque, so what exactly is the advantage ? Besides that, the E46 M3 diff is a direct fit; i imagine you'll need to make a custom drive shaft...
Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
Your project is coming along nicely ! I would go with the Camaro diff because it can handle 3 times the torque compared to an M3 unit. BTW, that flex disc is pronounced "jew-boh", not "gwee-boh".... :-)
Nice
What ratio is the camaro diff? 3.45? I might take it off your hands if you don't end up using it.
yes it is 3.45 send me a message on instagam
Jajajaj did he said no mames?
🤣🤣
Bad bitch
just get an strong LSD for the e46... easier... to do.. period... exchange t the camaro diff to one for e46...in a yunkyard or whatever..
It will be better in the long run to leave the dif as is and modify the sub frame to fit. You can add back strength when you modify the sub frame.
I'd modify the diff subframe rather than the diff itself. Its bigger than your old one for a reason, it can handle MUCH more horsepower than what you have now. Cutting that aluminum diff can cause trouble, plus you need a special rig and skill to aluminum weld. The subframe is steel, much easier to work with. I'd modify the subframe and even the floor pan to make it fit. Me and a Buddy built a 1989 Chevy s10 to a 454 v8 with a built turbo 400 trans and narrowed rear end to fit 33' racing slicks. It required narrowing the frame rails and tubbing the fender wells. We got done, the bed sides looked stock other than the fender flares and tonnel cover over the bed. Don't be afraid to modify to make things fit, plus its cheaper to custom build a subframe then screw up that diff, getting another is pricey.
Sell the camaro diff, axles, and all, and buy a posi bmw diff. Modifying that camaro diff to work in the bmw is going to be a huuuuuge headache, and later on if the camaro diff breaks you will be facing having to modify another one just to keep the car going.
-Much love from Canada!
Skyline Fabricator
the diff isn't modified. the mount is modified. so a new diff can be swapped in just like the first one.
it's so nice seeing women doing their thing with cars!!! Girl Power!!!
sincerely, The Doc
Have someone build a dif carrier...don't butcher the dif housing.....and open up that axle flange opening....
Love your Videos!
Greetings from Germany!!
👍 Good work yall. Im doing a swap with my 2007 328i coupe. Donor car is Camaro SS, LT1, manual trans. I was planning to use stock rear end until I can get a ford 8.8 rear end. But now you got me thinking about the Camaro SS diff. If the fab work is not too intense.
E46 Differential most likely will work without several additional parts. It is a 210mm differential (large case), whereas most non-m BMW diffs are 188mm (medium case). The E46 M3 differential also features a sideways front mounting bolt (parallel to the half shafts), and two rear bushings in the large finned aluminum cover.
In addition, you will find that the half shafts are much larger, may have differing lengths or bolt spacing circle.
In order to perform this swap on your 330i you will need the following from the E46 M3:
Subframe
Differential
Half Shafts
Sway Bar
Custom main driveshaft (which is already needed for your T56 anyways, the M3 differential is longer than the medium case 330i differential.
The control arms are identical between the M and non-M cars.
If you source a used differential, I would have it rebuilt. I've rebuilt mine by myself and it isn't particularly expensive to do, but it is well worth the time and effort when you have the differential sitting around. This is especially true of the variable locking rate E46 M3 LSD.
This is the easiest path to take, as the E46 diff can handle the power you want to make (be sure to drill out the front mounting hole, and re tap it for a larger mounting bolt or you will shear it off). Rebuilding services can also change the gear ratio to match the stock 3.45 ratio of the camaro driveline if you desire.
In this episode deep blue finger nail polish, a vein pop while muscling 💪🏼the bolt out of a sub frame, and a oil filled dimple were all spotted . This project is really getting interesting. Selena manages to over come every obsticle that attempts prevent her for putting this Beast together.
Don't cut anything just try to made an adapters a spacers something like this it would be better, nice work keep going im waiting for the next)) good luck
Selena I know your other half teaches you but you talk the talk really well which means to my mind at least you have a very good understand and firm grasp of what your say. So you walk the walk too I'm more than impressed with your dedication in your goal All that and I didn't want to sound sexist in anyway You should feel proud of yourself RESPECT Darren uk
cute with a cute with a oily face
My Sweet Selena so glad to have u back!!!
Can you modify the LS3 Subframe to fit the BMW? If you want to use the LS3 LSD
m3 diff with upgraded LSD, but no need if your not going to track the car on respect.
So with this build if you was to sell it would it be a salvaged title since yoy have remodified the car and use another car parts.
I think the mod is in the subframe not the diff the 1 inch height no big deal..you just need to make rear suspesion stiff
45k views!! 🤳 Damn girl GREAT JOB!
I'm think m3 diff and rear suspicion
Your tires are on backwards; or the wheels are in the wrong side... Just sayin'
G'Day Selena all the way from Tasmania, Australia. To LA.
Thanks waiting for the next video !!!!
Look into a Cadillac ctsv diff. It's more compact then the camaro
Maybe some way to use the camaro. Mount and weld them to the 30 housing
Do It!!! You guys can make it work!! Keep up the great vids
Save yourself a lot of headache
Get the M3 diff. Can use the rest of the rear assembly that you haven't without more modifications and customs parts.
Sell your diff and it should pay for the parts. Also sell some parts off that you don't need to help fund more crazy things
I want to see that car finished its pretty cool what you doing
Winter if you guys finish this project or it end up junking it
Just mail me the Camaro diff and use the M3 diff.
Are you taking auto mechanics at school?
Cant you also just weld the diff?
it would be cool to have you as a girlfriend
Hey Selena! Been following the build and this is great stuff!
For your diff carrier issue, I'd say to hack up the carrier and make it fit the diff rather than hack up the diff, IMHO.
That diff housing is cast aluminium and if you have off anything from it, I'd be concerned with structural integrity; a compromise not worth your safety!
Hacking up the carrier and welding it to fit the diff might be a daunting idea but the carrier is steel and likely 14-16ga thick which would mean great penetration when welding.
A side benefit? BRAGGING RIGHTS! :D
Another benefit? If the Camaro LSD absolutely won't fit (CV shafts not lining up, shaft tunnel too small/narrow/low, etc) then you could always sell the Camaro LSD and use the proceeds to fund the acquisition of the M3 LSD.
Just me and my .2c :)
Why not just drive a Camaro?
Good work hope you manage the diff.
Boooo school! Yay You Tube videos! Lol
Get you a girl who knows what a LSD is that's awesome keep it up
Stoked to see what you guys decide
looking good. to test the functionality of a limited slip lock one side up either with one wheel on the ground or a large pry bar between the studs. Use a torque wrench on a lug nut on the other side and see how much torque it takes to "overcome" the clutch mechanism. Each diff and limited slip company has their own specs.
Se complico un poquitín, pero estoy seguro que podrás adaptarlo. Animo, quedara muy bien! Saludos siempre de Guatemala.
yep yep!!! new video awsome you just made my day 😍 with your notification keep doing a great job!!! I'm very excited

Awsome! VERY SMART AND ORGANIZED!
Nice
Do you study auto mechanics in school?
no I do not
What are you doing for Ecu tuning?
Nick N most likely the stock ls ecu
Who else "likes" before even watching?? 🤷🏻♂️
i like your videos !
thank you!
M3 diff might end up being cheaper
Great video. Thanks
Sounding nice!
The perfect girl
Yessss i was like when they gone posttt yesss thanks selena :) the novela goes on
don't waste time for camaro diff.... from M3 its strong enough
Use a e46 m3 diff and subframe - it bolts up to the stock mounting points and will take 1000hp. If you use the m3 trailing arms then you dont need to get axles made as the m3 axles fit perfect. If you use your 330i trailing arms the axles will be the wrong length and need to be modified. M3 rear end will be much better, cheaper, and easier than using that heavy chevy diff. I have a e46 v8 which I converted the rear to m3, so you can ask me any questions. Keep up the great work Selena.
Wait for a Space Shuttle booster mount to appear here! Hope it was not all too DIFFicult.
Omg i just wanna hug her so close, she so adorable working hard to get this dream build done. Yo go selena!!!
