    My favorite effect was the weathered anti-glare panel on the nose. Opinions vary on Airfix, but I give them a thumbs up. Their range of subjects is enormous and their quality has zeroed in on that sweet spot where the same affordable kit can appeal to a beginner as much as a master builder. THAT is the magic of today's Airfix.

      Thanks, Christian. You are exactly right. I think far too often we focus on the small negatives instead of the huge positives in the hobby. And regrettably, that prevents folks from building some really good models and maybe even having a little fun like we used to when we were kids...haha.

I build it whatever the obstacle and more often than not if brings out the scratch - builder in me! I've never binned a kit, ever and I "survived" the grand - daddy disaster of them all, Revell's 1/72 Flower Class Corvette... just about scratchbuilt above deck... a two year project that challenged every skill I possess at absolutely every step and sub - assembly (I'm not a ship - builder, but I wanted this kit for 15 years FYI "Platinum Edition" NOT!)... Thanks for the kind words. It does seem that we modelers have gotten a bit spoiled and always find small things to bash about kits. It's not that I disagree with folks as sometimes manufactures do get "lazy" but hey, they are trying to make money and can't spend all their time pursuing perfection. I find that most modelers who spend more time nit picking spend less time building. Hello - I too, picked up this kit at Hobby Lobby with the 40% off coupon. It appears Airfix used a parts breakdown similar to the larger 1/32 Tamiya and Revell P-51. This is a very good thing. Airfix gives you the very noticeable recessed screw detail on top of the cowling that some how Eduard missed on their otherwise excellent but pricey kit. Eduard's surface detail is finer as well but for half the money, the Airfix kit is an absolute gem. Nice job and Great build video.

      I only inspected the Eduard kit at the last IPMS Nats but I've never had the kit. It's good to hear that even it has issues as some have trashed the Airfix kit saying that it's not Eduard. @@FlyingSModels You are welcome. The Eduard kit roof of the tail wheel bay also has a visible seam down the middle. Not so on the Airfix kit. I bought an Eduard cockpit and canopy mask for it. Maybe will pick up resin wheels, too. All this and still cheaper than the Eduard. I like your black paint base method for your cockpit. I like to use Future Wax slightly tinted black. You can brush this mix right on. Future levels beautifully. Added advantage is the glossy Future overcoat makes it ready for cockpit stencil decals. Then shoot it flat clear. We never get tired of Mustangs.

    One more note. Back in the late 60s or early 70s my parents took a trip to England and came back with several of the Airfix dual kits in 1/72. Boy looking back I thought at the time great. Back then there was no cockpit detail at all if you were lucky a plug in lump to represent a pilot. Being just pre teen I did my best to make an instrument panel at least. Eventually they wound up as firecracker bait taking pics of them as they flew into pieces. Looking back I wish I saved a few but being in my 60s now they would most likely be in pieces now, oh well. Models have come a long way!

I'm working on the same kit at present, I'd planned on the JerseyJerk, but had a change of heart after I had problems with laying down the red, so after stripping the red off I'm going with the alternative scheme which is the same as yours but w/o the rockets.I've found the natural metal a real bugbear and had to strip and respray various areas, she is now starting to look the part. I have to admit that while I have a bunch of references, the research part is probably an area I really should spend more time on. I tend to enjoy the creative side maybe a little too much. I don't want to get completely off base when it comes to accuracy and historical correctness so more research would help with that. Sorry about the D-5 at HL. Chad, fantastic job as usual! Question: at 17:00 you use raw umber oil paint over white spirits to add grime in some panel lines (mostly under the nose). Then, at 19:00 you use AK panel liner much more extensively on the fuselage and wings. What is the rationale for two types of panel liner? Is the raw umber a "leaking oil" effect while the AK panel liner is a different kind of dirt? Just want to make sure I understand the nuances!

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 роки тому

      Thanks, Dexter. I think you've got the basic premise. The oil over white spirits is applied to a flat or near flat coat and this causes the oils to soak into the surface a little and blend with the paint. The panel liner is applied over a gloss coat and really just provides a dark wash to the panel lines themselves. Hope this makes sense. If not, let me know and I'll try to explain it better.

In that area, I installed LED light strips above my work area like these: amzn.to/3qbNAW7 It's pretty dang bright but works well. Let me know if you need anything else. Always happy to help.

    I just received this kit today, can't wait to get started.
    Just a question: Step 16 shows the need to cut the tailwheel doors off if the kit is to be assembled wheels up. If these doors are cut off, there is obviously a need to close them. Are these cut of pieces to be glued flat to the fuselage, or is there a replacement part?
    I'm buggered if I can see that step! My old eyes must be faulty. Grrr ...
    EDIT: Just found it. WTF? Tailwheel assembly (down) is step 16, yet I have to go to step 47 to find the gear up closed tailwheel doors. Thought I was going nuts, LOL.

    Outstanding build sir.
    I have a question: what is the setup for airbrush when you using AK metallic paints ( size of the nozzle and air pressure).
    Thanks and keep video's coming.

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the good words. On the airbrush, I'm spraying with a 0.2mm nozzle at around 18-20 psi. Not thinning the paint. Probably have the trigger setting at 50% or less to minimize paint through the brush. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for the good feedback, Bruno. And you are exactly correct, I realized after I did all the editing and publishing that I had misspoken , thinking I was talking about AK Real Colors rather than their Extreme Metal range. Once loaded up, it's a pain to try to edit so I just left it in there as a "test" to see who would catch it. So far, it's you and one other guy. So excellent investigative work :) Now let's keep it a secret between the three of us...hahaha. Cheers!!

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Fernando, thank you for the kind words. I should have explained the decals over the panel lines. I'll try to do that in future videos. After applying them with the solution, I did come back with a sharp razor and cut them across the panel lines. I applied more solution and after that had cured, I put the oil wash over the pane lines. Hope this helps! Cheers!

    Hi! In this case You don’t use preshading technique, that because the model is metal finished? Extreme metal paint is opaque?

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 роки тому +1

      Yep, that's pretty much why. I find that by the time I get a good metal coat down, any of that preshading would be lost. The extreme metal paint is opaque but it's more to to with getting a uniform metal looking coat.

      Thanks, Will, I think. I hope the voice doesn't cause you to fall asleep like we all did in high school science class...haha. I gave the exhausts a quick paint but didn't do much weathering on them or staining. I didn't see much in the reference photo I had so I left it clean...maybe a bit too clean. Thanks again!

    Very Nice Job!
    When you did the weathering with oils (at the beginning), did you first put down a protective layer of some kind, or did you do it on top of the AK metal finish?
    How long did you wait before you did your masking?
    Also when you did your masking, did the masking lift the metal finish off?

    • @FlyingSModels
      @FlyingSModels  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the feedback. As far as the oils, I put down a coat of semi-flat/semi-gloss acrylic over the AK metal finish first. I probably only waited a few minutes before applying the masking but I use low tack masking and even "detack" it a little more by putting it on my shirt and then lifting it off before applying to the model. I did have 2 very small spots that lifted during the build and those were easily fixed.
