I don’t think I’ve ever come across a guitar player that said…” I’m satisfied with my playing, I don’t need to get any better”…we’re all trying to get better and its a beautiful thing…thank you so much Mr. Wood👍
Funnily enough, I have, but mostly from older players that play for fun. And, if you can believe, Tosin Abasi said he didn’t feel the need to be better/faster anymore around the time of The Joy of Motion
I've been doing more work on minor pentatonic positions 3 & 4 because positions 1,2 & 5 get used most, 2 & 5 being either side of 1, so they're conveniently close. I was doing some work on diminished and augmented lines integrating with pentatonics, and they kept being better with 3 & 4 for some reason.
I'm going to say this as a pro player for 35+ years who studied at GIT and studied with Paul Gilbert, Frank Gamble and other greats at MI. Andy is in the elite few who have crazy alternate picking. Everybody is different. My alternate picking is kind of good, lol. However, my economy picking is above par and my legato is pretty good. I also hybrid pick to supplement my other stuff. It really comes down to what works for you. And that is determined by relentless practice and finding your strengths and weakness'. I truly believe that is what makes each player unique. Andy is an alternate picking God, lol. It's surprising to hear he has to "work"on legato. It goes to show that Elite players also have so called "weaknesses". its what you do with it that matters. Am I wrong? Anyway, thanks Andy for what you do. You're a monster.
Thank you for the kind words my friend. To me I want anything I do to just be “available” when I need it. So I work on the weak points, due to the acoustic bluegrass background my picking is just kinda “there”. It’s my default gear, and so when I wanna help others achieve that it’s by talking about how I got there. Rule number one- play music that requires that technique- NOT work on a technique and hope music happens.
God dude you just rip it on the guitar. Unbelievable playing, I struggle with both legato and alternate picking, lol. I gotta try go to the event in Tennessee one year.
What scales are you playing when you speed pick it doesnt sound like pentatonic. I am practising an excercise at the moment to speed piick i have noticed a change in slight speed but not much it has been a week since i did it. Good luck always.
Hi Andy, Love your playing and technique! Could you tell me how how you have your action set up, rough 12th fret measurements . I'm quite new to playing and feel like things are easier when I set up quite low but then i get fret buzz. Just wondered where you have your Suhr set up. Many Thanks!
The late great Mr. Shawn Lane recomnended playing faster than your capabilities and that the brain would eventually make the proper corrections secondary to its built-in desire to negate cognitive dissonance. His advice makes sense in terms of learning theory and neurologic functioning.
Yeah I mean it’s a live stream, I’m shooting completely from the hip, it’s not a show or a reversed song or anything like that. It’s like you’re in the living room with me.

@@chirbin0nidhogg623 ….I’m sure thats true, but for most of us I believe its the never ending journey that drives us…but what do I know…I’m an idiot 😫
100% agree

Don’t feel bad bro…we all struggle with legato and alternate picking😫
I agree I almost entirely practice with music bc the progress seems abstract if not nonexistent otherwise.
yeah baby
Are you friends with Guthrie there in East Nashville? Do you like Trevor Rabin?
I like Andy's metronome. What is the brand and model? Like to see if it's on Amazon. ;o)
