Here after 12 years. Town Infection was one of the earliest mega wads featuring massive maps that weren't imagined for the size of original Doom running machines. This wad deserves to be in a museum.
@@SuperLeosid Thank you so much! I'm not sure if it deserves to be in a museum, heh! Nothing of what I did here was particularly revolutionary, at least in map size. I remember back then there was this map that could only be edited in the XWE map editor because nothing else could handle it because it was so large, this was before Doom Builder was even a thing. That map dwarfed anything I put in TI, I think it was called Doom Center? I'm not sure, I might be confusing it with something else. It was a city-like map, that's where I got the idea of trying to make a city in the game. Fairly unsuccessfully on the gameplay department btw because those maps were the worst with the hitscanners at a ridiculous distance shooting at you xD
I can't believe it's been 5 years since I posted my comment, but I'm back again to get my nostalgia fix and I'm also planning to play through this WAD again inbetween these holiday seasons when I'll have free time. Wish you a merry Christmas and happy new year!
Holy crap, I grew up with this WAD, and now YT recommended it to me again :o You have no idea how much I played this WAD through and through because of its badass music and well-paced gameplay. You were also a mapping idol to me, and one of the few people who motivated me to try Doom modding when I was 10-12 years old, somewhere around 2008. I salute and thank you for making such an innovative and nostalgic mod that is still very fun to play today. Also this map's song has one of the wildest, most satisfying solos (2:36) that I've ever heard in a custom MIDI. Even after a decade, it's still mind blowing!
It's awesome how people still remember this. Thanks for the kind words, they mean a lot to me! Even though people like some of the maps here, I am very critical of the mod myself and now I pretty much hate a lot of the maps and I think they are based on gimmicks that don't translate well to the doom engine but sounded awesome on paper (for example, I thought of a massive map taking place on the streets of a city, bad guys would be going around the blocks looking for you while cars drive around. That idea sounded awesome, but the resulting map is a pain in the ass to play and it's tedious and frustrating). Instead of having 30+ maps, I could have done something with better pace with just 10. The last time I played through the mod, I ended up skipping some of the maps because I felt it was unworthy to go through that hell. The first and the last episodes have the best maps, in my opinion, Caro Data Vermibus being my favorite of the ones I did, and the Hell one overall. This map in undoubtedly the most known and most liked of them all and I don't know if it's because of the music or the map itself. I guess the idea of the massive fight with the scripted marines was awesome and worked well and the music fitted perfectly for the context. This probably has to be among the best maps I've done. I wrote the song for my band in 2006 and it had a segment where vocals would go that I removed from the version in the mod because it was too different to the rest of the song. In the end, we didn't record it until 8 years later in 2014 using this shortened version as the base. We did some changes to the solos (which originally were very Kirk Hammett-ish, I was really into Metallica when I wrote them), but they're quite close to the ones I wrote for the MIDI. One of my best compositions, too! Thanks again, dude!
Thank you for replying to me! I can see what you mean by some maps being tedious, but still, I think they are pretty fun to play :) I think if you were to take Caro Data Vermibus and replace the textures and entities with Doom 64 assets, some people would easily confuse it for an actual D64 map. It had a great environment. The Cemetery and Hell level always amazed me when I was small. They had a creepy atmosphere to them that had me replaying them over and over on UV. I don't know about others but personally I love this map because of its layout, style, action, and music. There is also one more reason which *might* be strong enough to overshadow the previous ones: great, continuous story progression. By that, I mean that there are 4 well-linked maps in a row that are set in the same underground base, this being the last. By the time I got to this map, I already familiarized myself with the general layout and detail of the geometry, as well as the custom entities present in this base that fit in perfectly and add to the immersion. Everything seemed so detailed to me. Not to mention that all 4 maps have really, really good music that still gets me jamming.
Oh yeah, that's a good point! I got very inspired in Goldeneye 007 when making this and I wanted to imitate the camera effects that game has and try to replicate the mission system where you play many levels based on the same location with similar style so you get a feeling of progression. There's a lot of that in the mod, maybe except in the last episode which is a little bit more abstract and at that point I just had a lot of different maps and I wanted them all somewhere in the main story, some of those ended up just as concept maps, despite me wanting them in the main episodes. My forte were not detailed maps, you can look around and see maps far more detailed than mine. In fact, I remember people calling them dull and uninspired architecturally speaking, and I have to agree; most of those maps use those silver textures without much variety and without much layout variations, most of the interesting features were the windows and the cryogenics. Instead, my forte was coming with different mechanics, so you have a programmable teleporter, scripted fight segments and scripted events. I used to be a lot better at scripting than mapping, to be honest (I say "used to" because I've been without mapping for years now and my last project didn't have much scripting at all). Funnily enough, despite people calling the music good, some of the tracks took me just a couple of minutes to compose. For example, the music for E1M4. I remember playing the main riff on the guitar, writing it on software, repeat it a lot and add some random basslines, copying the drum beat from another song of mine and making up a guitar solo directly into the software. The music for the boss maps took more thinking and I actually had something in mind to it, I wanted an epic boss battle music, so I went in that direction. It worked pretty well!
Its been since I was 9 when I first saw this. This video right here is what did it for me, at that point I had to get this game and try my hand in doom and modding/ map making. Always good to come back and remind myself of the time when I would waste days and even weeks playing/mapping/modding from me being 9 to 12, got really good at map making and modding new enemies and sprites. I miss those days when I could do that all day and not worry about anything. Im 20 now. Glad this video is still up
I was 16 when I made this map, I'm 28 now! Man, time flies! Glad you got inspired by the mod to start making your own. I miss those days too, I used to worry about keeping my grades ok when working in Town Infection, now I have bills to pay and a job to go to!
youtube back at it again with the fire recommendations, remember watching this thing wayyy back in 2013/2014, still one of my favorite videos to this day
Bruh. Nostalgia washed over me when I remembered what this was called. Talk about a blast from the past lol this shit slapped. Loved the unnecessarily mirrored player hand sprites (lol) and the realm667 resources you used. The visuals of that first map in the flooded house which you escaped by simply walking out the window will forever be engraved in my psyche alongside the countless versions you made of this lmao. Amazing stuff for 13 year old me.
Hahaha! The mirrored sprites were because I am left handed! And about the window, I mean, if it works, it works, I guess? Haha! I can't believe it has been that long! Thanks for playing this back in the day and thanks for swinging by again after so long! I'm glad the nostalgia hit hard!

Still my favorite of all time. There are parts that could be shined up here and there to fit today's standards, but its all round my favorite. so much nostalgia
This is definitely the best custom WAD I have played. The story is awesome, the worlds are amazing, the scripting is amazing, the custom monsters make gameplay so much better and the music has been stuck in my head for the past two years. I don't know what else to say apart from it being more than perfect!
Coming back to this for a third time but god the amount of times i watched this video hoping to get it on my xbox360 was insane, and when i finally got it in pc, i played through it in single-player and coop with a friend. was definitely worth it. (still have hopes a sequel will be made someday...)
Thank you so much for swinging by! I'm so glad you've gotten enjoyment out of my work!! There was a sequel project in the works by someone else but that got abandoned, I was working on a prequel but unfortunately life is too busy these days for me to make it happen, and the whole idea was too ambitious. I've thought about making it a community project, but that kind of leadership is something I'm not accustomed to, so I might have to look into it in more detail
Gran trabajo :D
7-8 years old i have when i watch this video for the first time. Now with 19 years, im gonna search and download this mod. So much feelings with this video.
God so much nostalgia for this. i remember watching this on Xbox 360 youtube wondering how to get this mod on Xbox 360 doom II... good times. fuck now i need to play it again
@asad859 it is supposed to happen that way as those guns were deleted. I didn't delete their information but I deleted their selection key. I decided to take them out because they were exactly the same thing as the chaingun but with different graphics and sounds and it was feeling (at least for me) that I was getting away from my purpose of keeping some classic Doom gameplay. Any AK47 or M16 around in the final version of the game is a bug and not a feature. I surely forgot to delete some.
@DanceOfDemon This is a very early version of the mod, later in the project I deleted those weapons to avoid problems with Rareware for using their stuff (they are direct screenshots of Goldeneye weapons) and they were the same thing as the chaingun, so I thought it was useless to have 3 different chainguns that did exactly the same thing.
hahaha thanks for that! I was making something related to TI, but I dropped it for a while because I got no time to work on it, school is sucking my time badly, but after getting all of that done and under control, I will continue, and there's other stuff I've planed based on Town Infection. I'll be doing all of that when I got time.
Nope... I never thought on uploading the MIDIs I made for this one... but I'm planning to do real instruments versions of the songs, I already made the one for boss stages, but this one is more difficult... this MIDI is from a song I made for my band lol
@Shot846 in PlanetDoom you can find the final release of this mod, you gotta look in the classic Doom section (I think is called that way), it is also hosted in FileFront but it is almost impossible to find it there.
hhaahha cool you liked it! Yeah, there are many nice things at this wad, the army, the virtual worlds, the boss battles, the intros, outros, I wanted to provide something new for the Doom community and it's cool that people is actually liking it, in a few minutes more I will be adding the link for the Town Infection page for every video and not just only for Map20, so stay tuned
I used WadAuthor, an outdated editor, but the stuff you're asking for it's all about scripts. If you use scripts properly you can create great stuff, even better than the ones I've done. The exception are the sprites. The sprites are inserted as files in the wad file with a wad explorer like XWE (the one I use) or DeePsea, there's a whole coding system that you must learn... but if you google around you will find a lot of tutorials of how to do that.
Because I felt like doing them left-handed. In a beginning I wasn't planning to release this to the public and I wanted to have Doomguy to be somewhat like me, left-handed, so I mirrored the weapon frames. If you got basic knowledge of wad editing, you can delete these new frames to revert them to the common right-handed form.
When I recorded all of these videos and lot of time before, since today, I don't use auto-aim, I disable it, completely, and as you can see I beat this level in UV, well, I have completed the wad in UV without dying, and I think the levels are difficult, but not THAT difficult, during the making process I was still getting messages from people saying that "it was too easy". Oh, other thing, I don't use quicksaving, just the autosaves after beating a level. Good luck with Aeons of Death ;D
finally somebody who commented in a negative way! Yeah, let me explain, first, my weakness in mapping are details, I have creativity but I can't make good details who the hell knows why and I planned NOT to use GZDoom exclusive features so the wad will be playable in both ZDoom and GZDoom.
thanks man! In the Town Infection site there are MP3 versions of some songs, it's not the best quality nor the best production, but is an idea of how they sound with real instruments.
@Smokeresu I did the music, it was uploaded along this mod but the page got deleted... You can find the zip file with this mod MIDIs in FileFront because I uploaded it there.
Yep, I am =P And also that's the reason why I mirrored the gun sprites... Also it always gave me the impression that doomguy holds the weapons with his left hand... but when you shot the shotgun, SShotgun, the plasma, etc. you see that he's holding it with the right one... Anyway is cool to see that doomguy uses his left fist =P
@donwest420 First of all, you're invited to try to do it better, if you can't, then don't complain, second, I didn't stole it from Goldeneye, I did (at least I intended) to make a homage to that game, third, it was beta stage one and it was work in progress, and that means that the sprites were not fully edited, but I needed a base sprite to work on, fourth I took that weapon out shortly after uploading this video, as I prefered to keep the classic feeling putting back the original chaingun.
@ElChipotle200 I made it left handed, and yeah it was on purpose... The music... hmmm difficult, since the page got deleted you should look around in FileFront, since it was there where I uploaded that stuff.
@doomaster1999 It's a shortened version of a song I created for my band, it's called Post-Mortem. I recorded a real instrument version of the Town Infection version of this song, look for it here on UA-cam searching for Town Infection Soundtrack Killing Spree
@Smokeresu To load this mod you need ZDoom or GZDoom since those ports have features that the original Doom didn't, and those features are used in Town Infection. Town Infection was uploaded to filefront by me (it's the official link) and somebody put it on FilePlanet, get in one of those places. (the difference between both is that GZDoom works with OpenGL and have special 3D features not available in ZDoom, Town Infection is like 99% compatible with ZDoom)
with wadauthor you must get the wadfile where the other weapon is located, take the sprites and paste them in your wad, then open the source wad, check for a lump called decorate, look for the data of the weapon, copy it and create a decorate lump in your wad, also sounds and the same with sndinfo
@cblankify What should I enjoy? Your comment? Yeah... pretty enjoyable... By the way, I already fixed the grammar problems, it happened that not everybody in this planet is a native English speaker, and that includes me.
@GuitarDeity For me it's annoying too when the player fights with the right hand when I want the left one and that happens all the time and I'm not complaining about that with the makers of the games... Also, I create wads, I don't edit the source code of the game to include new features, the only way should be deleting the sprites of the modified weapons from the Town Infection wad or create an additional wad for the people who want him lefty or right handed.
This time was different because a person who arrives to THAT installation have to be part of all the conglomerate than handles all those instalations, you're not from there, and they know that, but considering that there inside is almost hell itself they were scared and they were about to leave the place and just leave it locked... but you know that those monster will get out of there if they want, so you give them an advice, they thought it was ok and they fight with you, they will die anyway..
i remember playing a skulltag server with this- only the marines werent colored, and i couldnt see the text. i guess its just one of those things that works fine in SP, but pops up like new in multiplayer.
good job man ! i wanna learn how to script like you and/or your team... at least i wanna learn how to put a text or a camera, or make that a marine gives you a blue keycard... this is really great because anyone that speaks english can understande the story of the wad by texts... and other fact its to use new monsters that is more simple that scripting... great job ;)
@doomaster1999 Many years ago, when I had a keyboard, I used to play E1M5 from Doom. I created the song for MAP16 of Town Infection playing the keyboard of a friend of mine.
I already uploaded the updated, fixed version of this (1.0.1) to the Facebook page, it's not on mediafire or 4shared, it is on Google Drive (I hope it's not a problem, but it shouldn't). I'll be updating the links from the videos (fucking GameFront, they deleted all my files without explanation!) as soon as I get enough time, by now, get to the facebook page, there you can find it.
Interestingly, those marines has the same 100 health points that the player has. That means that if it were you inside of that room, you would last the same amount of time.
Thanks man, you know... doom is very limited in the thing of creating scripts and AIs, the marines are really idiots because you can't make them really better. English is not my main language so it's natural that many of the texts have grammar problems, any corrections about that are welcome, check the story for info about the stuff of the marines and the scientist (the story is on Map01 video). The project is almost solo, just with a 2 maps contributions and various beta testings.

Certified hood classic
I've been looking for this video for years
Wow... 10 years
16 years.
Wow, I used to watch this video alot when I was like 6 years old. I just found it!!! it's soo great!
Gran trabajo :D
esL Anger Yo quiero jugarlo ;-;
7-8 years old i have when i watch this video for the first time. Now with 19 years, im gonna search and download this mod. So much feelings with this video.
Great vid man really enjoyed it =)
God so much nostalgia for this. i remember watching this on Xbox 360 youtube wondering how to get this mod on Xbox 360 doom II... good times. fuck now i need to play it again
8 years ago, I discovered doom mods. This was one of the videos that introduced me to the modding community... and it blew my fucking mind
hahaha thanks for that! I was making something related to TI, but I dropped it for a while because I got no time to work on it, school is sucking my time badly, but after getting all of that done and under control, I will continue, and there's other stuff I've planed based on Town Infection. I'll be doing all of that when I got time.
why the hell nobody reads the description? in the end, there's a link to the page where you can get it, cool that you liked it! =D!
Nope... I never thought on uploading the MIDIs I made for this one... but I'm planning to do real instruments versions of the songs, I already made the one for boss stages, but this one is more difficult... this MIDI is from a song I made for my band lol
Sorry about that. The Posting mechanism here on youtube tends to screw up with me. I meant to post it to lxahinon.
I can't wait for the next one! I'm only about 3/4 of the way through but easily one of my favourite wads.
@Shot846 in PlanetDoom you can find the final release of this mod, you gotta look in the classic Doom section (I think is called that way), it is also hosted in FileFront but it is almost impossible to find it there.
This was the first wad related video I watched on UA-cam for Doom. Oh the memories.
So much nostalgia for this mod... watched it when i only had xbox doom and no computer doom...
hhaahha cool you liked it!
Indeed it is, it is the last map of that episode, and back then this was the last map I had done so far.
Love the MUSIC MAN!!! and the idea! GOD BLESS YOU!
dude the music in this is absolutely perfect!
As the video title implies, yes, I indeed played this on GZDoom.
Because that's the sound included in Doom 2 for chat purposes. In Doom 1 it was a short tick sound.
finally somebody who commented in a negative way! Yeah, let me explain, first, my weakness in mapping are details, I have creativity but I can't make good details who the hell knows why and I planned NOT to use GZDoom exclusive features so the wad will be playable in both ZDoom and GZDoom.
thanks man! In the Town Infection site there are MP3 versions of some songs, it's not the best quality nor the best production, but is an idea of how they sound with real instruments.
lol ,that little talk with the other marines was pretty funny !!!
@julian15421 not my problem... I never said this was fully compatible with skulltag...
I'm actually working on an update for Town Infection. When I finish that update I will upload it again.
Excelente trabajo ;D
@donwest420 First of all, you're invited to try to do it better, if you can't, then don't complain, second, I didn't stole it from Goldeneye, I did (at least I intended) to make a homage to that game, third, it was beta stage one and it was work in progress, and that means that the sprites were not fully edited, but I needed a base sprite to work on, fourth I took that weapon out shortly after uploading this video, as I prefered to keep the classic feeling putting back the original chaingun.
hahah thanks, I made that music =P is called Post-Mortem, an edited version of a song I made for my band hahaha
This Video was over a hundred likes than the other videos you upload since 2009. It's like people liking the "Killing Spree."
No idea, I use Wadauthor, not Doom Builder.
@ElChipotle200 I made it left handed, and yeah it was on purpose... The music... hmmm difficult, since the page got deleted you should look around in FileFront, since it was there where I uploaded that stuff.
I played this mod with skulltag on the freedoom source port. It's an amazing mod!
Esto es mi infancia.
my young me loved this video.I will play it now.Are there any jumpscare or else?
Hey, i remember watching this years ago!
Nice work dude
damn you have a good future ahead of you bro. choice
@cblankify What should I enjoy? Your comment? Yeah... pretty enjoyable... By the way, I already fixed the grammar problems, it happened that not everybody in this planet is a native English speaker, and that includes me.
@mo123813 I updated the description of this video so you can download the file from the direct link from FileFront or join the Facebook group
i remember when i was 4 and watched this and had no fucking idea what they were talking about. ahh nostalgia
sooo are you like 10?
skullwithnobrain same
:O Very nice ! I didnt know how u do that but its amazing
No idea hehehe, I took these from Action Doom, they were textures, not sprites so I dunno...
@julian15421 Yeah, I used a lot of dummy sectors to do the cutscenes
i remember playing a skulltag server with this- only the marines werent colored, and i couldnt see the text. i guess its just one of those things that works fine in SP, but pops up like new in multiplayer.
yep, I was starting from that map and I wanted fast action. These videos are to show the map, not my skills.
I fucking LOVE the soundtrack for this mod, man!
@KillerKrieg AFAIK, ZDoom and any port that use it as a base (ZDaemon, Skulltag, GZDoom, ZDoomGL, etc.) is capable of making this.
Check the video of Map20, there you got the link
Now you know who's the final monster of the wad, congratulations! lol
@doomaster1999 yep, warp2 flat example. warp2 looks more like water than warp.
good job man ! i wanna learn how to script like you and/or your team... at least i wanna learn how to put a text or a camera, or make that a marine gives you a blue keycard... this is really great because anyone that speaks english can understande the story of the wad by texts... and other fact its to use new monsters that is more simple that scripting... great job ;)
4:26 damn my boi rip 😔
@doomaster1999 Many years ago, when I had a keyboard, I used to play E1M5 from Doom. I created the song for MAP16 of Town Infection playing the keyboard of a friend of mine.
In fact, the doom guy seems to hold his weapons with his LEFT hand rather than with the RIGHT one.
I need a link of this music on this map! Where can I find it???
"Ouch."
"Yeah, that's what I said."
Pretty much.
That means that if it were you inside of that room, you would last the same amount of time.
aahh so much memories of this wad y really like your job and this mod is part of my child hood hahah ! :v
