The Mysterious Mr Elgar. Episode 15 - The Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лют 2023
- How to win friends and influence people! They say great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. Well, not if you're Edward Elgar. He counted up his friends. He gave them each a theme tune. He threw in an enigma. And he dazzled (and mystified...) generations to come.

INDEED
Amen to that!
Much appreciation for the touching comment - and there's many more on the way!
@@ClassicsExplained will there be Bolero, Pines of Rome, Pastoral Symphony, Rhapsody in Blue, Song of the night, Carnival of the Animals, and The Bartered Bride?
Agreed! I couldn't have been more pleased to see this new video is my subscription list!
So perhaps the Enigma Variation truly was the friends we made along the way
Nice
*chef kiss*
Volga boatmen more likely
Me: "Where do your relatives live?"
Others: "They live in the city of A, the village of B, the country of C, etc."
Elgar: "They live in my music."
I once read that, as a child in school, E.E. was asked by a teacher: “What’s your name?” he replied “Edward Elgar.” The teacher, offended, told him: “It’s ‘Sir’”. E.E. prophetically replied: “I’m sorry, Sir Edward Elgar!”
Love it! Hope that true. Its hilarious!
Until now I hadn’t realized that Elgar’s Enigma theme was also used in the soundtrack to “The Matrix” - in the track “Clubbed to Death” by Rob Dougan. Amazing stuff!
I already realized it upon hearing that movie OST decades ago!
The amount of happiness and pure joy I experienced on see u guys back is ridiculous I tell u.......RIDICULOUS!
This makes us so happy to read :)!
@@ClassicsExplained can you please make new episodes about Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Ravel’s Bolero, Saint Seans’ Carnival of the Animals, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Respighi’s Pines of Rome, Mahler’s Song of the Night, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Rossini’s Barber of Seville, and Smetana’s Bartered Bride? It would be nice.
@@meganlewis2377 Yes.....if there was a petition for all this......I would've blindly signed it. Tho....I want Respighi's entire roman trilogy......not just the pines. Also....his Church windows will make an interesting video.
Man, the animation has improved by A LOT! Welcome back!
Thanks so much!
definitely agree
@@ClassicsExplained are you gonna make new episodes about Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Ravel’s Bolero, Saint Sean’s’ Carnival of the Animal, Mahler’s Song of the Night, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Respighi’s Pines of Rome, Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Smetana’s Bartered Bride, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, Orff’s Carmina Burana, William’s Lark Ascending, Bax’s Tintagel, Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances, and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides?

The real Enigma was the friends we made along the way…
Gosh! And I thought he was just the composer who wrote Pomp and Circumstance that plays at every high school and college graduation. I might need to listen to this one in full.
Listen to the two symphonies, the violin concerto, the cello concerto, the triumphal march of caractacus and all of the pomp and circumstance marches
BABE WAKE UP CLASSICS EXPLAINED DROPPED!!
Love it! Thanks
Omgmgmgmg he’s back!!!!!
2023 is saved!!!!
Love it!!! And it will be for a time yet when we bring out many more

And can you make Mahler’s Song of the Night too?
Great, now I want a cigar.
Don’t forget when many played Nimrod after the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II!
Great point! I actually recorded this film almost three years ago now - much has changed!
First Samonella, then Bluejay, then Greatbigstory, and now this channel. Can't wait to see more of these awesome videos from you!

Except unlike a Duck I'm sure they would sink.
I have never clicked on a video so fast, I swear!
Yay!
we played Nimrod in high school concert band, with no string players. Our band teacher explained the origin that the Variations were about Elgar's friends and nobody knew who Nimrod was. The name sounded like an insult but the piece was so warm.
I completely understand what you mean, when I was young calling someone a Nimrod was implied as a dolt or an idiot. Odd that happened if it was meant as Hunter. Lol😜
"Old Billy Baker". Haha. Irrelevant personal fun fact: as a child I lived in WMB's house. I never knew about the connection to Elgar until 40 years later.
He has returned yes!
And we have more coming!! We're still uploading - the HD versions will be ready soon - Thank you
@@ClassicsExplained when will there be more? please dont ghost us again.
This is the best essay on the Enigma Variations I've ever read, seen, heard.

Thank you :)
I knew I made a good decision putting notifications on this channel! 😊 I appreciate how you brought all these different characters to life, so much more entertaining and understandable than some dry old article about which movement represents what.
Thanks so much - exactly what we're aiming for :)
@@ClassicsExplained can you do Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Ravel’s Bolero, Saint Saens’ Carnival of the Animals, Pines of Rome, Witt’s Rena Symphony, Mahler’s 7th Symphony the Song of the Night, Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Smetana’s Bartered Bride, and Bizet’s Pearl Fishers
I remember one time in high school, my orchestra was going to play an arrangement of Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Unfortunately, the pandemic canceled the concert and I was a little disappointed. But I still have my second violin part so I can still have a little bit of Elgar in my heart.
Edit: I wonder what the next piece you are working on next
Another edit: How about Benjamin Britten’s opera, Peter Grimes? It is such a sad opera
You should do Peter and the wolf by Prokofiev or a ballet/opera of some sort
They have Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” up, along with Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring”! ☺️
@@Hailey_Paige_1937 So. What does that matter?
@@alegendamongmen They said: “…Or a ballet/Opera of some sort.” So, I figured that if they were potentially new to this channel, they should check out the ballets already discussed until more eventually come out.

not the shounen anime type of "power of friendship" conclusion lmfao
I had heard a theory, some years ago, that Elgar had deliberately provided the clue to the four-note theme.
When asked, 'Will you tell us what the theme is?" he replied, 'Never!" When asked simply, 'What is the theme?' he supposedly rephrased the question: "Do you mean, will I ever reveal it? Never!' Someone put two and two together, and came up with this answer: 'Britons *NE-E-E-VER* never shall be slaves'... the same four notes found in the theme...
I don't know how much credence to put into this, though.
4:16 And this is how IShowSpeed was born before he actually was
I first started watching your videos earlier this year, as I just started music appreciation at my first year at college. I kept listening to all these pieces of music and getting hooked on them. It then led me to looking up these songs on UA-cam and finding your channel. I saw when your last upload was and was disappointed that these 14 lovely deep dives into the music would be the only ones made by you. The joy when I woke up and saw this in my subscription feed was indescribable. Wonderful video as always and I'm excited for what other videos you will upload.
This is such an appreciated comment - keeping listening, loving and learning!

Thank you for making these videos. I never thought that such beautiful music could be made even more beautiful. Adding some context to this piece really makes me love it so much more.
