  • In today's video, we will see how much steel a 5.56 Green Tip can go through compared to a regular 55 gr FMJ projectile. All of the testing was done at 50 yards using a529 grade 55 mild steel. Thanks for watching!

    Be very careful when extracting a "hang fire." I've had a 44mag touch-off after a full second delay. I became a believer of the 60 second rule. Wait 60 seconds after a 'CLICK' before opening the breach. It might save your fingers some time. Great videos, thanks for the groundwork.

    It appears the 3/8 in plate was angled when you fired the m193 at it. That may have been enough angling to increase the apparent thickness. Just for the scientific method I suggest making yourself some sort of bracket so that you can stand up these steel plates and they will be perfectly square. Repeatability and all that.

    The energy dissipation of the impact on an unrestrained steel plate with a piece of wood randomly positioned behind it is a considerable factor in penetration testing. It won't necessarily result in the difference between a pass-through and a crater, but it's worth improving your setup to get consistent and more reliable results. Spinning/rotating plates waste significant amounts of energy when comparing multiple calibers, velocities, etc. Otherwise your approach and sequence is pretty well done. It appears your 300 Blackout vs. 7.62 x 39mm test incorporated these setup improvements, but so other viewers are aware, the results of an unrestrained steel plate can yield drastically different results depending on the rotational velocity and shot location.

    Food for tough, against mild steel the 55 gr penetrates less, but against hardened steel like ar500 55gr penetrates say a lvl 3 ar500 plate whereas a greep tip wont, you actually need lvl 3+ or lvl4 to be able to stop regular 55gr

      @fujimi715 Рік тому +1

      Yes I've tested this as well..AR500 side plates level 3. 16in barrel..green tip stopped M193 clean through. The reason is because the tip of green tip, while considered hardened and not mild, it is not super hard. It's actually softer than AR500 steel. So the tip doesn't help it at all when going into AR500. But the tip is harder than mild steel so it helps. But the new M855A1 round the tip is harder than AR500. It's actually close to AR600/AR650. So it can punch through AR500 plates like AR500 level 3 no problem.

    This is why they chose the round. However in reality the number of situations you benefit from the 7 grain penetrator is tiny compared to how often you’ll benefit from the better accuracy and performance of the 55 grain FMJ.
    It was sold to NATO successful by FN because it increased the range it could penetrate a steel helmet by like 100 yards I believe. So instead of 500 it was 600. Who the hell was taking head shots at 600 yards with iron sights I don’t know??? It’s possible but very difficult Simo Haya kept his shots around 350 meters I believe at the longest and he used irons. Also killed more men than any sniper in history.
    Ultimately I still believe SS109/M855 was a huge mistake over M193 (though we should have gone to 1/9 twist for SMK).
    However if we ever go to war against 3/8” mild steel I’ll be grabbing green tip and going to town!!!

    A 5.56x45 is not a steel penetrating round. I shot a 3/8 steel spinner designed to be shot with a 44 mag pistol with a 7.62x54 203 gr wolf soft point. The bullet passed through the plate so fast it didn't even wiggle. The wolf round made a hole big enough to put a 7.62x54 or 308 case in it for target practice with my 22lr. A 308 with a hunting round would do similar damage, I have shot 1/2 mild steel with a 308 loaded with ADI 165 Sierra Game Kings. The 308 passed through the steel hanging on chains very easy. The guy who owned the steel plate didn't believe a 308 would pass through 1/2 inch plate so easily. I hated to ruin his nice pistol set up but he asked for it. Both cartridges were shot from around 100 yards.

  • @daveweed2765
    @daveweed2765 11 місяців тому

    OK. First off the green tips are called armor penetrating rounds. Not armor piercing but penetrating. To stabilize the rounds for accuracy the military uses 1:7 twist rate. Lead is heavier than steel but takes more to compress and causes a lot of heat wich will melt the steel you are hitting. Ergo why you have the long streamers on the hole. And why the 1:12 twist rifle the projectile hit sideways.
    If anyone is impressed with the green tips I would not with any twist rate more than 1:8.
    But anyone in the military knows these 62 grain green tips are notoriously less accurate than the 55 grain FMJs farther than 200 meters even in an M16A2 or M4 with 1:7 twist rate. And you just proved twist rate matters.

    Not to be a troll, but lighter faster bullets do not penetrate as far as heavier bullets; although, to be a valid comparison, it should be the same weight bullet. The heavier bullet is already going to penetrate deeper, so how much of the effect is weight and how much the steel penetrator? I think people get confused that faster bullets have higher energy so they think they should penetrate farther, but heavier bullets have more inertia which pushes them farther. Just like most people who don't know think lighter bullets are better for long range because they are going faster; however, same caliber heavy bullets retain much more of their velocity at longer range and end up being faster down range.

    What ammo are you using that fails to fire, you call it a dud? Discredits the entire video if you're using ammo with several rounds in a row that won't even fire.

    Two things. One. Primers on military grade ammo are harder, hence the misfires in the bolt action. Not enough spring on the firing pin to light off the ammo. Two. Not a keyhole, a ricochet from the dirt in front of the target.
    Otherwise an entertaining video.

    Penetration the green tip wins hands down but in lethality that FMJ was tumbling out of that 24inch barrel against a living target that will flatten and just tumble through the target.

    I don't quite get how FMJ would be lighter since it has a full lead core while the green tip doesn't?
    To be sure, I'm not familiar with these types of cartridges but they seem to be similar to what we use in the military though we have AP rounds instead which have a full steel core and a much higher velocity because steel is, as we all know, lighter than lead.
    Back in the day we used Tombak plating instead because fucking up the rifling isn't a problem when you have 13x as many barrels as guns.

    They aren't that spectacular. Tiny dent ... like match head size .. 556 is to lightweight to do any flowering to a 3/8 steel target .
    338 lapua green tip or .50 cal will be much more rewarding for damage display. I was disappointed in the 566 ... no carnage .

    Man, I'll never understand any twist longer than 1:9 for .223/5.56. Unless the only thing you're shooting are 40gr rounds, just leave the 1:12s on the factory floor. Personally, I go for God's Twist .. 1:8. Works great for 55-77gr rounds on both my 16" and 20" ARs.
