@BucketSeeker Another good question. The answer is exactly what would happen to a real steam engine; it goes faster! And going uphill it goes slower. This doesn't happen to 12v electric engines but it does make live steam much more fun to operate. For example did you notice at the beginning of the clip after the loco had taken up the slack in the load you have to put on enough power to create "wheelsip" to get the load moving. Just like the real thing!
Actually got FS to pull 31 and the A4 to pull 24 but didn't record them. Takes a lot of rearranging of the coaches because they derail o9n the curves. You might notice a bogie has come as as the second loco starts. I have 11 locos in all and thes are my best 2. The worst barely pulls 6 coaches but spews steam everywhere - looks great, video coming soon.
guess what hornby was actually gonna make oo scale live steam models the water was heated using a heater and the heater was controlled by a special controller and there was even a whistle
When's Hornby gonna start selling these things in HO with an American 4-6-2 Pacific bodyshell on them? I can't imagine it'd be too hard a conversion to make and we'd love live steam too.
@steamengineshooray It does look crooked doesn't it! To put oil in the loco you remove the funnel and maybe it didn't get put back properly before the run. I'll be a bit more careful next time Adrian
Not rare yet, plenty on ebay but prices are rocketing for everything other than Mallard set which used to retail at £525 and settled around £350 brand new. So I recommend you buy a Mallard set "brand new unused" or "well used by seller - I know its history - and in good condition". DONT BUY "only run once" or "dont know but looks OK". Chances are it will have had a first-time-out crash and maybe not run on distilled water, that's not included in the set. Join the OO Live Steam Club for support.
THATS ALOT OF PULLING POWER FOR THAT LIITLE ENGINE 22 CARS IN ALL. i have an electric ho scale and to pull that many cars i have to use 2 " steam" engines that are electric and they have to be in a half way train where there is a lead loco and a loco in the middle of the train if i want more cars then the farther apart they get in the 2 engine. most ive ever pull at once is 55 cars and that took up my enitre track on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. and i use 4 engines

30 & 22 passenger cars are a heavy convoy. Exceptional.
How much do these Live Steam engines weigh?

Is Flying Scotman's funnel crooked at the start?
Yes. Our next show is Fawley Hill, May 18/19. See our club website for details of our roadshow. Search google for OO Live Steam club.
Impressive display! Kudos
Awesome! One thing, does Hornby make OO scale coaches The Flying Scotsman pulled in real life?

Thats quite powerful
could you double head them or would it all go to tears
@OOLiveSteam
if they use 20 volts is it? then using 2 may overload the transformer as the resistance will effectively be halfed.
Wow. 30 & 22 is impressive.

does the live steam engines have their own controllers or can they run of standard ones?
@modeltrainman12345 What an interesting question!
Over to the Live Steam section on the Hornby Forum and see if anyone has tried to do it......
Do you know where I can get one and for how much? I heard that these are pretty rare now so I don't care which engine I get, A3 or A4.
Were you at the London Model railway show?
3:12 Theres an axel off the tracks.
@cubeproduktion LNER teak coaches hornby make great models of them

Holy crap my electric version of that can't pull half that.
