Limit Your Creativity

  • In this video I gave myself 3 limitations to see if I could work within those limitations to create a video that was artistically creative, intellectually interesting, and cinematically beautiful. Was I able to achieve these objectives? I'll let you be the judge. I definitely recommend trying similar experiments and giving yourself limitations to boost your creativity as you work around or within those limitations.

    I couldn’t afford clay as a kid, so I used the cheese wax!
    It’s amazing what you can do with that, your sculpture are immediately recognizable. ❤

    I'm a musician and here the same principle applies: limit yourself to enabke more creativity. For example, use only one guitar string to create a solo/melody. Or mute all strings to come up with an interesting strumming rhythm pattern. There are so many possibilities and discovering them can be easier when they are put in focus. Paradoxically, you are putting a focus on what you yet have to discover. So just think about it as focusing on your creative ability. Even the act of setting limits is creative.

    Thank you for this video! I've been following your tips videos for about a year and I find it great to hear your personal statements and phylosophy, that brought you to this moment. I 100% agree with your point about the use of limitations. It's fair for a lot of aspects in our life, not only in art.
    I hope you'll make more videos telling your personal thoughts on different topics.

    Serious question: as a Christian scultpor, what are your thoughts with respect to old testament edicts that ostensibly speak out against sculpture, such as Exodus 20:4-5: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them". Are there any readings of such commandments and others that can reconcile the two? Does the distinction boil down to whether the sculpture itself is worshipped? What of religious sculptures such as depictions of Christ?

    • @AndrewJosephKeith
      @AndrewJosephKeith  7 місяців тому +1

      That is an interesting concept and perhaps I should make an entire video delving into that topic sometime. There are some religions (such as Islam if I understand correctly) that take this passage literally and do not create figurative sculptures. However I believe that anything that we put in the place of God becomes and "idol". So money, wealth, a nice home or car, all of these things can be idols if they take the place of God in our lives. We must remember at the time there was the ark of the covenant, which was among other things a sculpture with two sculpted angels on top. These sculptures were not an idol because they were pointing to God and the covenant or promise made by the Israelites with their God.
      I believe sculpture can be a powerful tool to convey a message just as any good work of art does.
      What I do see as a conflict is if someone came to me and asked me to make a sculpture of an idol or pagan god for them to worship. This I believe would be going against my own religion to create something like that.
      Interesting topic and perhaps I'll make a video about it in the future. I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

    • @Leo-hu3lp
      @Leo-hu3lp 7 місяців тому +1

      @@AndrewJosephKeith I think it would make an excellent topic for a video as there are just so many different angles to look at here.
      It's interesting that you mention the Islamic intepretation, since it is well known that as a result of the prohibition on representations of human/animal figures in Islam, they developed arguably the most elaborate and artistic calligraphic tradition in the world, which directly affirms your thesis in this video of using limitations to spur creativity. The Human Spirit will always find a way to work around material limitations to express itself.
      It is also interesting that classical sculpture, which (as far as I'm aware) is a revival of Greco-Roman traditions, was passed down to us from a largely pagan society that did in fact worship idols. The greek word for statue, agalma (άγαλμα), is synonomous with a cult image, and statues of gods were frequently used in greek and roman worship. The origin of the greek word is ἀγάλλομαι (agállomai), which means “to be proud, exult in”.
      It seems that the modern defense of making classical sculpture then, as a Christian, would be focused on the intent behind the creation and distribution of such a sculpture. And I think that's totally fair.
      Interestingly, on the complete opposite end of so called "wholesome intent", was the extensive usage of sculpture (especially the creation of "waxen images"), in medieval dark sorcery/witchraft (i.e "Maleficium"). In fact, the attempts at medieval political assasinations using waxen effigies during the 14th and 15th centuries are too many to count, and quite amusing to read about. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_of_Nottingham#The_conspiracy for one such example.
      Lastly, as to my personal thoughts, I will spare you another essay, but the TLDR is I come from a secular jewish background, and have grown up hearing these old testament stories of aniconism, so I was curious as to your opinion coming from a religion that evolved from the same foundational scriptures. I personally don't think it's wrong one way or another. I just enjoy the beauty of classical sculpture, which is why I'm taking your course :)
      P.S. I delved into the logic for Jewish aniconism with GPT, and in my opinion, the only strong secular argument in favour of it would be "preserving cultural identity". See chat.openai.com/share/cc069123-e22b-4439-89d9-c60ad74bf3f3 if you're interested.
      Also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_Iconoclasm and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iconodulism contain a lot of interesting history about Christian aniconism.

      If you believe a urinal is equally creative as a classical sculpture then I guess we just have a fundamental disagreement on the purpose of creativity and art.
