It irks me to see archers drawing their bow and holding. They must’ve assumed medieval warbows were made of butter 😅 Edit: I swear this comment is drawing quite a debate about whether the bows were actually drawn. Let’s assume for a moment that the bows weren’t drawn, and the archers were just aiming waiting for the order. That’s actually an even more STUPID thing to do, because 1. They’re tiring their bow arms out while waiting, and 2. To draw the bow they’re going to need to bend their bodies which is going to throw their aim off and reaim. Tell me you’re never fired a medieval bow without telling me you’re never fired a medieval bow 😂 These aren’t modern compound bows where you can stand straight, aim, and draw with minimal effort. You actually need to contort your entire body and PULL HARD to get to full draw. Which is why archers and longbowmen hold their bows at low ready, and only bring their bows up, draw, aim, and fire in less than a second. There’s ZERO benefit to medieval archers aiming without drawing except to show their boss “I’m aiming like you told me to milord”
Exactly. As a former stunt guy, i had to do lot of those scenes myself. As an archer, this kinda stupidity in movie bugs me a lot. Still a good scene, kinda learned how to separate the two.
It’s perfect when it’s done right. The key is to not portray him as evil. Think of how the 300 was. Heroism,patriotism,self sacrifice. Then in the sequel(which is from the Athenian perspective)they’re portrayed as brute savages. It’s all about the delivery with these kinds of things

We only care about Dresden because we made such a big deal of the German’s indiscriminate killing of civilians. So many will cry about Unit 731 but wind their neck in when talking about the American war crimes in occupied Germany - so many rapes, gang rapes, condoned so deeply that pastors have been quoted saying the Germans deserved it. Military leaders quoted saying it’s not fraternization if you don’t know the name of the girl you raped.
I never saw him as a villain... Why is he a villain tho? There were many conquerors and raiders before and after him that are not considered villains...

King Ragnar had the upper hand and was seeing how they were gonna react. He knew they were getting rich and can still surprise the enemy. Ragnar had been learning for months about his new enemy

The origins of how the Saxons ended up in Britain is discussed within the show as well, where Ecbert acknowledges that not too long ago, they were similarly pagan conquerors much like the Vikings.
programs about vikings always seem to make the saxons look stupid and military inept, when we were anything but. Most of the saxon defeats were because the local ealdormen knew that if they didnt fight immediately the vikings would ravage the area. So, until king alfred created the fortified burgh system, the saxons tended to fight even though they were always absolutely outnumbered. Its annoying that those basic facts and realities are always ignored. Man for man a saxon matched a viking any day.
To be fair, i hated the way they made the vikings look too. The Vendel /early Viking era was full of amazingly badass levels of bling which would have been more than "holywood"enough if they had accurately portrayed these people. Imagine the vikings looking like the guys from the Sutton Hoo burial , or the Vendel graves or even the Oseberg tapestry. They would look epic, and it would be super historically accurate to boot. Instead we get weird looking goth bikers.
Ragnar loves to confuse his enemies. The Saxons were expecting negotiations on their turf to settle things quickly. Whatever ambush or diplomatic plans they had are now upset because Ragnar only came to look at them. He revealed one of his cards, the kings brother, but he is still able to roam about the countryside seizing whatever else he can or burning it on a whim. He’s indicated he’s open to negotiating but in no hurry. Therefore the Saxons have to leave the safety of their walls and risk further loss to put an end to the marauders.
In the earlier seasons it felt like that, like the Vikings were unstoppable but as the show goes on the Saxons adapt and start to beat them in the later seasons

As far as they know, the men sitting there could be expendable. And an attack could only make the war band more intent on attack. The Christian World thought they could just pay off any attacker. So if they could pay some gold they took from their subjects, rather than face the threat of a defeat, which would lead to internal unrest inside their own kingdom, they would definitely be more willing to pay than fight. War brings uncertainty. And for a King, uncertainty is a thing to fear. Added to the historical fact that Aella was only a king of 1/3rd of North Umbria. It brings these fears to the forefront. Aella couldn’t afford to loose a battle and therefore status and power. In reality. North Umbria was split into The Northen Lands of Bernicia, the southern lands of Deira, and the South West and Western Area that had Eboricum, or “York” as its capital. Aella ruled York and the South West of North Umbria along the River which gave them access to The Sea. In the show this is only hinted at with Aella needing to become a Vassal of Ecgbert and Wessex. After his loss in power and status due to his defeats at the hands of Ragnar’s Danes.
Im Norwegian, we where taught about the Vikinger in school, all Norwegian children were, this show is vary poorly put together, Saxons where a very tough fighting force, and northmen usually had a bowl haircut, if they where young and long hair a beards it they showed courage and where rich from looting

You don't have to wait because there are a couple of games which can be played. Expedition Vikings and Frozenheim are Viking games in which you build up your settlement. You raid and gather resources to upgrade and get better weapons and armor. The first is a turn-based RPG and the second one is a RTS and city builder.
The king was not expecting his brother to be alive as that would be one less person he had to worry about taking his crown. He was selfish and deceitful - he was the cause of his brother's death

The Saxons depicted in the show look a lot more like Normans with what they wore in the show.. The Saxons in real History had better looking armor than what the show can produce! in that time they were known as Anglo Saxons and they had plenty of standardization of armor and weapons.. even for the Scandinavians! Both peoples wore much more armor and chainmail on them than what You see.. Both peoples and places already had standardization of weapons and armor and it was all a very fascinating and interesting sight to see when these stoic warriors stood next to each other ready to fight!
Probably a bit of a burden to have all these people weighed down by armour acting I imagine it to be more restrictive than what they went with and more expensive I’d imagine some of the battle sequences would have been much more laborious in full armour

He did actually. He believed in Ecbert, which got his settlers killed. He also got baptised, and seemed to have hopes of reuniting with Athelstan in the afterlife because of it, despite using it as a tactic. The reason his sons were even involved with Christianity is because he got them into it.
I don't know why vikings went for some weird Norman continental armour look for the Anglo-Saxons when the Vikings became Norman's and then conquered the English who still fought like germanic warriors in the same style as the original vikings.

Lol, look at the tiny helmets of the Saxons just sitting a top of their heads looking like they'd fall off the instant the actors slightly move too fast. Who was the outfitter for this "historical" series? At least the Hells Angels on the horses look not as silly, if slightly out of place by a few centuries. Or is the in-universe excuse that the Saxons washed their armor too hot by mistake? 🤣 How anyone can watch this series and not laugh at how bad the costume design is, is beyond me lol.

This was such a great series. It started slow, but then grabs your attention and doesn't let go.

Both peoples and places already had standardization of weapons and armor and it was all a very fascinating and interesting sight to see when these stoic warriors stood next to each other ready to fight!
Probably a bit of a burden to have all these people weighed down by armour acting I imagine it to be more restrictive than what they went with and more expensive I’d imagine some of the battle sequences would have been much more laborious in full armour

Ragnar never gave in to Christians like his sons, the only one he respected was Athelstan.
He did actually. He believed in Ecbert, which got his settlers killed. He also got baptised, and seemed to have hopes of reuniting with Athelstan in the afterlife because of it, despite using it as a tactic.
The reason his sons were even involved with Christianity is because he got them into it.

Lol, look at the tiny helmets of the Saxons just sitting a top of their heads looking like they'd fall off the instant the actors slightly move too fast. Who was the outfitter for this "historical" series? At least the Hells Angels on the horses look not as silly, if slightly out of place by a few centuries.
