OITNB's Samira Wiley on Poussey plot twist

- SPOILER ALERT!
Fan favourite Poussey Washington, played by Samira Wiley, is suffocated by a prison guard - one of "the good ones" - during a peaceful protest. The Juilliard-trained actor learned of the distressing, ethically thorny scene long before her cast mates. For nearly a year, she quietly contemplated the end of her character's narrative arc, and the significance of killing the show's "moral compass."

I've never cried so hard over a death on tv, ever. Not even with the red wedding. It was just so unexpected and unfair
Also i loved the interviewer!
Same.. I was drowning in tears. My family came running into my room frantically asking "whats wrong whats wrong"
omg man I wish it was unexpected for me because It was spoiled for me
same it was accidentally spoiled for me that she was going to die but i sobbed my heart out anyway
Maureen Keegan I didn't even cry this much watching Glenn die from the walking dead. And I was bawling my eyes out watching that too
Poussey is like one of the characters that you expect to have a good future outside of prison. REALLY LOVED HER CHARACTER :(
That's why they killed her.
+TheDarkishKnightro for real
Edlyn Miller They want to kill someone who couldn't be a physical threat, someone who was in prison for a non-violent crime, who had a bright future ahead of them and who was a beloved character by pretty much all the fan base.
She was so lit
In the last episode when she smiled at the camera killed me
They gave her a beautiful send off. And the episode when she actually dies was the only one in the show's history that ended in a blackout and didn't do the orange screen. That might be a little thing but it made me die inside. OMG 😭😭
Same. Every time I watch that scene I feel like she's smiling right at me and it makes me cry even more
I used to do the same lol. There is some kind of nice "suffering experience" about this show. It has completly amazed me.
Ugh same
omg don't cry
I bawled my eyes out when she died in the show😭😭😭😭
I swear
Me too. And yelling at the tv, "No! No! No!" :-(
+Linda B yea me too she was my favorite character which also made me very mad and couldn't let that go but I'm fine now
I think a lot of us were really affected by this, the acting on this show is so amazing, I get lost in the show, so it did feel like losing someone you cared very much for. It was heart breaking. Many people binging (sp??) and just weeping at 3 AM!
Me too! I just finished it tonight and i cried when lolly got sent to psych and i cried harder when poussey dies and then they show bailey i cried and then i told my bf and broke out heavy crying. Over a tv show!!!!
Poussey was my favorite character and I had a huge girl crush on her. Even though the last two episodes made me cry, they were so powerful and are probably my favorites because they built onto her character and shed light on those issues.
Same😭
Same
aw...she wore orange
Think you might get the high five for being the first one to note that...
LOL😭
Man, that was the first thing I thought of watching this. A play on the title. Just over 4 months a bit late, eh..
Ikr! I was actually surprised the host didn't connect that with OITNB
They better make up for poussey by BRING BACK BENNET AND EXPLAIN WHY TF HE LEFT DAYA ! I NEED FUCKING ANSWERS.
I know right! It's driving me insane not knowing!
OR.... OR MAYBE SHE'S JUST IN A COMA! They didn't properly pronounce her dead, they didn't check vitals or anything! I know it's a show, but still! MAYBE?!
I want Stella back tbh don't know what it was but she brought some feels. I'm a guy too :/
HELL YEA! I'm so pissed at him! he better come back to make everything right!
+ELDudero 10 she was there a little bit for season 4
When she died I was sad, but when she had smiled at the end, it was a really hard kick to the chest.
She is so beautiful!!! I love her character on and off screen. What an amazing person and actor!!! Any tv show would be stupid to not snatch her up right away!! I can't wait to follow her career and see her next move!!! How lucky are we to have experienced this with her!!
Her smile at the end :(
that smile at the end was heart breaking for me
i love Samira what an incredible actress! i cried like a baby when i saw the end scene. kept screaming 'NOOO they didn't' and her contagious smile at the end killed me 😢 -excellent interview
I hope next season will have great story lines, because I can't imagine not seeing Poussey. She was my favorite. That million dollar smile will definitely be missed.
Great interview. Samira was an amazing actress on the show and I love her for speaking intelligently and honestly about what the show is trying to accomplish.
The last episode of Season 4 made me cry so hard. When she looks into the camera, the music, the start of the riot.
AS YOU CAN SEE WE ARE BOTH QUALIFIED CHEFS BY OUR CHEF HATS
I was so devastated when i saw this... I cried a ton and had to turn the tv off after finishing the season and didnt do much else for about 15 mins till I could process what happened!!! Everything happened so quickly. I know its just tv but you get so invested in these characters and she was my favourite
As a viewers point of view these last two episodes are the best in the entire show. Any show. Just because of how instant it was and how this entire season she was focusing on her future with soso when she was to get out. It was really amazing how they make Bailey kill of poussey and give us mixed feelings like "I can't believe HE killed her" or "he didn't know what he was doing" it goes to show how powerful television (or in this case Netflix...) can be when it comes to get their point across.
I lovvvvvved Poussey, I've probably watched the last 2 episodes of series 4 at least 10 times each and both episodes have had me balling like I've lost a real life friend, I am so upset she's gone but she's an amazing person and actress and hopefully she'll be on ours screens for a long time!
I start hate and love every characters in Orange, they really make me notice that this criminals are human too. They all made mistakes, just chose the wrong choices or be in the wrong places.
She was literally my favorite character 💔
So sweet. Her sweetness shines in her character on the show.
I'm crying right now for the 10th time today after watching that. In the last 2.5 hours.
I just finished watching Season 4 and damn... The way Poussey smiled at the camera in the end really got me. She's definitely a character I will miss, can't say the same for a lot of characters. All I can say is damn..
I know some people are saying no one should blame Bailey for killing Poussey, it was an accident but don't forget the hippy, Jones, accidentally killed a minor but she has to serve time. I think it's unfair, how despite being an accident Bailey is given full sympathy and no conviction just because "being a guard has ruined him", yeah it was an accident, but he killed someone, someone weaker than him, someone who didn't deserve to die, just like Jones did. Accident or not he took something he had no right to take, and just because he is given sympathy by Caputo he should be in jail just like Jones is, just like the thousands of other convicts are in the world. It's terrible how the system works because you think everyone is equal in the eyes of the law but the law chooses to protect who they are personal with, or believe in rather than what is right and wrong and what is equal. They should convict Bailey for murder, because he's a murderer, accident or not.
poussey's death fucked me up
She is such an incredible actor., After what happened to her character you felt her missing from the show after that. I really hope she has a very long in successful career.
Great interview! Good questions and connection to society.
It gives me chills...still. Incredible character.
Brilliant interview. Samira seems really genuine.
I LOVE HER AND I MISS POUSSEY
and for the record to Samira- I am angry about the brutality that happened to poussey, and I'm angry about it because I know it's real and I know it's happening and I don't know what to do about it.
I'm sure many fans feel the same.
Why do I love all of the prisoners in OITNB? Now OITNT is never be a fiction anymore for me. When I heard her say "understand my responsibility as an actor and stories" in this interview, I was very moved. I already miss her in the next season.
I'm literaly in love with this woman. This is one of my favourites characters. ❤
I CANT WAIT FOR HER TO WORK ON OTHER SHOWS OR SO
SHE IS AMAZING
Bro I bawled my eyes out I've never cried so much about a character. And even now everytime I see her I tear up a bit.
she is a very good interviewer all the right questions were asked i think
"getting it right is honestly having people feel something"..... i burst out laughing at this. Feel something? I WAS A WATERFALL, I CRIED FOR 2 HOURS AND AFTER WATCHING HER DIE, I LOOKED UP SAD FMV AND WATCHED THEM WHILE CRYING!!!!
I didn't even read any social commentary in her death. It was just a beautifully tragic scene and loss of somebody I felt so connected with from the start. Fuck I'm gonna miss her.
NO I didn't stop the video early enough and I'm not in this fandom for so long yet, I just started watching season 3 and now I hear my favourite cute girl is gonna die, I won't ever get over this
I miss Poussey SO much, she was definitely my favourite character BY FAR... but then again, I believe it was necessary... it had to be her for it to really impact people.
man even just listening to her while shes talking about the death of poussey makes me wanna cry
The last moment of the last episode made me ball so much, it's not even funny.
what it did on the show was give people all over the world that maybe don't know personally someone who has suffered at the hands of police, a face, a relationship, a kinship with a person that has suffered at the hands of police officials. many people know personally those that have been shot and killed, or beaten or suffocated etc. and are deeply heartbroken and angry, and as someone in the uk, i am devastated to hear about these incidents and cry etc. but i dont know them, i cant know their pain. but we knew and loved poussey and we felt that pain and it can only propel the movement forward. good job.
The death of poussey was terribly sad. It was very unexpected. The actors did an amazing job because it did provoke so much emotions. Poussey was such a great character she always had so much optimism😢
You can tell she's just as devastated to not be returning to OITNB as the rest of the fans. She doesn't want to leave the cast or the set. :(
I hope people have a conversation about how the victims of police brutality aren't just criminals and the perpetrators aren't just sadistic murderers so we can move past the blame game and talk about real solutions.
Literally poussey was my favorite and I cried and it has changed me and I was literally so sad :( I can't even watch season 5 but it's going to be so good !
I loved poussey she was one of my favorite characters on the show it was heartwrenching to see her die 😞
I deffo felt something, i cried my eyes out for about a hr she was my favourite....:( RIP
Man...I agree with you all. Brilliant series!
Poussey was my favourite character. I couldn't believe it when she died. And I'm in the middle of watching the show. Still season 5 so it's all freshly in my mind. The first thing I thought when she was killed? Was this before or after George Floyd was killed? I've looked it up because I wanted to know if the show took inspiration from that murder or if life was imitating art...
Profoundly sad! I can't even watch an episode without crying with Taystee and and I'm feeling like my family died
I actually cried when I saw this episode
I cried my soul out after watching that scene
When I watched that episode I cried so hard and was so depressed, I was sick from school the next day. 😂🙈😭
this was an excellent interview
I'm sorry, are you kidding?! Can we stop praising the writers of this show for killing Poussey? Up until season 4, they were doing a fairly good job portraying real life issues, but Poussey's death is not a job well done on the writer's part. One reason being that it does NOT reflect the realities of police brutality. Because Poussey's death was an accident, it has no relevance to actual police brutality which in the majority of cases is intentional. All this death does is give white writers a reason to pat themselves on the back and say they're socially aware. This death did nothing for the BLM movement and was a waste of a wonderful actress. Another reason being black people don't need reminders of what a happens to us on the daily. If you want to see actual examples of police brutality turn on your TV, and there you have real police brutality. But let's stop calling OITNB writers heroes for a death that addresses nothing.
Killing Poussey was not meant to be direct, rather an allusion. It is a TV show and there are many ways to get out messages. It's the same with movies and music, they all have many allusions, sexual innuendo's, subliminal messages etc to reflect common life situations and events.
I haven't cried so hard about a character since Hodor.
Bruh I've never been so mad and so sad in my entire life that scene made me spend a whole day just crying in my bed and I've never been so connected to a character of a show to the point where I cried
Pousseys smile is adorable
Sad to see Poussey go but so happy to have Moira
I cried so bad when Poussey died she was my favorite character and watching the death scene was so hard. Samira is literally so gorgeous and when she smiles my heart melts, i love her so much!!!💘💘💘💘
The only thing that made this better was seeing her on Handmaid's Tale.
samira... thank you for sharing your thoughts about it
This was a really good interview
Her smile is amazing.💕
I wish they would come back in season 5 and be like "it's just a coma" cuz I literally finished like 5 minutes ago and just wanna bust into tears
I cried...sooo sad
Us too. Us too.....
It makes me sadder that none of the cast knew but her like if you watch the episodes again its like a whole different POV 😅
The death doesn't piss me off so much as how they told her. On the walking dead, the cast is told before the production if the episode of their death- not before the entire season. Like that would honestly suck to walk around during the entire season, making these friendships that you basically know is temporary but they don't. Having to keep such a large secret kinda sucks. Don't know why they told her so early.
At first I was mad/upset thinking they jumped the shark but They did it so well they did it completely right
of course she wouldn't want to watch it... she just got fired from the show. That sucks! I look forward to see her in the future, because she needs to grow as an artist as well.
Poussey and pensatucky made me cry so hard
I think this is definitely confirmation that there is no way poussey could be saved or mistakenly dead (like all the theories suggest)
Ruby Gazza i am hoping its a dream..lol
IM SO MAD RN IM ON EP. 7 HOW COULD YOU!! (writing this after staring blankly at my screen in regret for 5 minutes hoping to travel back in time and save myself from watching this spoiler)
FUUUCKK she was mmyyyy faaacee I cried SOO BAAAAD it was just soooo saaad WTH would they kill such a great character
she's so cute I love her !! she's just amazing
On one hand, I get why she had to die and that guard had to be the one to kill her. Poussey was the prisoner who seemed like she was genuine a good person, and didn't really belong in Prison and the same with that guard. He was the "good guy," trying to not be turned ugly and cold by prison society and the last one to intentionally harm an inmate. That's what made it gut wrenching .
On the other hand, I wish they had kept it 100 if they were really trying to mirror society. In this real world, today, cops are intentionally murdering Black men and women and they're just attempting to make it look like it isn't what it really is. Ain't no accidents bih.
you know i cry
she is probably the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen
Hope Soso will become a more darker character because of that.
I want to watch this video but I still didn't see the episode where Poussey died ugh
I'm disappointed the most they gave Samira Wiley to do in her final season was look cute and mushy with soso and the Judy king stuff. Pousseys character deserved more material if this was the last we would get of her she barely interacted with her girls this season.
I had way too many emotions about this one. I wonder how she told her parents (if she waited or if she told them before the show aired?) I know they had a issue when she got beat up in earlier episode...
I cried so hard it was horrible to watch her suffer in silence
same 😭
her death isn't the saddest thing
it was her friends crying of her death
That whole episode just fucked me up for a long time
i guess someone stole her car radio
Traci bruh frs me too
I love that the writers made us grow to love Poussey for 4 seasons and suddenly throw her away at the hands of a CO. It's like they're making us feel like we lost someone we knew and loved similarly to the real life families and friends of the victims of police brutality.
+Steven Nicke very true. It sucks but it was definitely will written.
+Steven Nicke agreed! very good writing
yeah for real this was like my favorite season of her's and she was one of my favorites sucked she had to go but makes sense why they kill her off she wanted a future and felt she could be a hero and she just couldn't
I agree with you and this is a wonderful interview! I don't know why, but I've loved every prisoners in OITNB in the end. Now OITNB is never be a fiction for me. I'm going to miss Poussey in the following seasons.
True.
She had so much potential in her future, she was gonna get a job and she was going to see the fish in Fiji!😭
She was going to spend her life near the ocean with her girlfriend
As stupid as this sounds I'm booking my anniversary October trip to Fiji because of it and when I see the fish on the floor I will think of P and SoSo.
Jelly Belly Girl I would do the same
I think this is why everyone is so devastated by her death, we were imagining her life outside of prison and the places she was going to go and thats all over now
i cried so much.when she died.
Poussey represented countless young people of color who are fundamentally good human beings with bright futures, but are thrown into the heinous system we call "Corrections" for years, for pissant, petty drug offenses. And many of them *don't* survive it. I think that's why her character was chosen for that fate. And I hope that's a big part of the conversation happening now. Whether or not most of the fans will see beyond a simple reaction of, "I loved her! This show sucks now! Waaaaah!" to grasp the bigger, real-life picture remains to be seen. But I absolutely get why they did it. As a fan of the show, it broke my heart! But it's reality.
THHHISSSSS Thank you for this comment. Although her death really broke my heart,
Really well put.
so true
Yes.
Yes.
I don't know what made me cry more, the death scene or the 4th wall break smile in the last shot.
Yes that 4th wall break with the smile really made me cry..at first I was like Oh hell no she isn't dead, then I got really pissed off that she was dead, but then when they showed that smile at the end..omg i broke down..even though its TV and its fake and I am looking at her in this video I still feel sad about her character dying.
I was crying for days and so mad
i just simply didn't stop crying in between those scenes either
Yes. She was without a doubt, the one with the most purest heart out there and it was painful to see her die like that. I was shocked the entire time, and i will be for a long time. And her smile in the last shot..is something i will never forget.
That smile ripped me apart!
Man I love her smile so much! And the ending where she smiles at the camera! 😫😓
😢😢😢😢 I know!!!!
broke my heart... literally!
I know these last to episodes were emotional roller coasters and then at the end the cart fell right off the track
i broke down after the smile.
+Vicky Shiku I was sobbing
OITNB just Game of Throne'd us... 😢
Wow, I watch that one too. Seeing the "walk of shame" was satisfying though.
the walk of shame? By who?
Ylas thats fuckkkeeeed up man
lol good point
and Fast 7nd us
HER AND SOSO WAS GONNA SEE THE FUCKING FISHES IN FIJI SHE WAS GON GET A JOB HOW DARE YOU OH MY LORD
just when she was talking about getting that job with judy king and talking about her future with soso she just had to be the one to die 😔😔 why the writers do us like that 😭
Omg... yesssss i was rooting for them..
We should sue... that's a thing now lol
What she said about Eric Garner... so true. But I also feel bad bc Bailey didn't mean it. But Caputo pissed me off,bc I thought he'd tell the whole story and rat out Piscotella (if I spelled that wrong.)But that had to happen for the plot too.
For me the caputo thing was the most important issue and got me so fucking mad
The fact that Bailey did it made me cry more😂😂 i couldnt tbh.
yeah Bailey was so sweet and I knew that he didn't mean it, Crazy eyes should've gotten killed off.
+Chelsie Ward omg no. 😂😭 i couldnt handle that.
+Courtney Michelle lol she got on my last and it was just uncalled for. The fuck you going bat shit for
Poussey was my favorite character since I was greeted with her. I was bawling when she was killed off. Looking into the story and the message behind this I was deeply moved by this. Taking the world of today and put it out there on full blast to a wide audience is something huge and I'm happy that they conveyed the message out through Poussey. Because she was the perfect person to do this with.
Your Pousey is Soso Taystee
I see what u did there😂😂
nice
Lol thanks for clearing up some of the tears 😢
Secowe Gaming np m8 ;)
lmfao 😂😂😂
I'm straight but I'd switch all the teams for Samira. She's a beautiful and pure person ❤️
You and so many others. Her pure smile just sucks you in and those eyes... they steal your heart.
lol. Meeee tooooo!
man! I said the same thing... in straight but Samira (or Poussay) could get it!!
I'm gay as fuck & I'd marry her 😂 she's gorgeous as fuck.
Same
damn and the last words her and soso had was when she mouthed from across the room during the protest right before her death "im sorry baby" and then they smiled at eachother not knowing it was their last time😢😭😢 and tasty didnt get a chance to say goodbye either😭😭😭
The last episode of season 4 OITNB changed my life.
How so?
Yo fr
I like this whole interview. not the usual "how awkward are the sex scenes?"
Thanks! That's what we go for here!
